SANCU O 'N 5 5 . w V ' 2 E gk z e y Y olcs -b QP S' HMO Declzmtzkm HIS year it is our unfortunate lot to lose two of the School's oldest and best masters. Mr. Welsh and Colonel Rexford are retiring. Since his arrival in 1907, Mr. Welsh has taught mathematics. He has not only taught, but has been a housemaster, a particularly under- standing member of the Disciplinary Committee, and, this year, Chairman of the Rector's Advisory Committee, as well as holding many other im- portant positions. It is with the utmost regret that we must lose such a faithful friend. ' Colonel Rexford has served this school loyally as a Mathematics teacher since he came in 1909. He was a housemaster for many years, and President of the Old Hundred Club from 1913 to 1917. Besides his vast contributions to St. Paul's, Colonel Rexford served in the A. E. F. in France the First World War, as Colonel of the 197th Anti-Aircraft Division of the National Guard and has been Chairman of the local Selective Service Board during this War. We wish Colonel Rexford many happy years of well earned retirement. COLONEL REXFORD MR. WELSH WILLIAM WILLARD FLINT JR 1892 1945 Ein fiilrmnriam Foreword HE Sixth Form of 1946 is the Hrst class in four years to graduate in time of peace. Even though many of the wartime uncertainties are still with us, we look forward to ultimately being able to attend college in the normal pre-war fashion. Eight members of our form grad- uated at Mid-Years in the last Graduation to be held at that time. The Council has operated very efficiently during this difficult transition from war to peace under the skillful leadership of Fred Chapin. The Work Program which was invoked as only a temporary wartime necessity has been modified slightly, but it has taught a valuable lesson, and will probably be retained, in part at least, in the years to come. We look forward to an era of peace, and hope that we, as well as those who succeed us, will ever bear in our minds the cause for which so many Alumni of this School have given their lives. Ingersoll concluded another year of generous charity work. Again this year an Information Please program was held, yielding a good return, and a highly enjoyable Mid-Winter Fair netted unusually large funds for furthering the work of this organization. The Cadmean and Concordian Literary Societies reverted this year to the peacetime prac- tice of a dinner in the Spring Term and a joint debate, the change was favourably received by all members. The subject of the Joint Debate was: Resolved: That the Career of John L. Lewis Has Been Detrimental to the Cause of Labour. The Ailirmative was supported by the Cadmean, who won the Debate, and Concordian upheld the Negative side of the question. R. J. Cox, of the Cadmean, was named best speaker. The Scientific Association, led by Mr. Lea and K. Smith, and sparked by a number of good speakers, both inside and outside of the School, enjoyed a very active year, and the Annual Meeting was very enjoyable. The Dramatic Club excelled this year in its Thanksgiving production, The Hasty Heart, and its realistic radio play War of the Worlds. The Fiske Cup was won by Ford, for its production of The Flower Shop. h The Book Fair and the Library Supper contributed towards a successful year for the Li- brary Association. The language societies were as interesting as ever this year, the Deutsche Verein held its annual picnic and the Cercle Francais its Annual Dinner. The Glee Club was more outstanding this year than ever before. The Anniversary per- formance combined the directive talent and resourcefulness of its leader with the vocal abilities of its cast in such a manner as to bring out in a highly enjoyable musical show nearly all the aspects of life at St. Paul's. The credit belongs to Dr. Lefebvre and the entire Glee Club. is wmv -s...., ,N Q THE MISSIONARY SOCIETY 10254. . THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Harb Rmr: Grimm. Dodge. However, well coordinated teams were produced by all three clubs. The Old Hundreds won the hrst team series in the last quarter of a hard fought game against the Isthmians. jones Toland was the mainstay of this last game, as he had been through the season. It was because of his passing ability that the Old Hundreds were such an effective team. ' In the lower team series, the Isthmians swept to a second team victory. The third team series was an all around tie, while the Delphians took the fourth and fifth and the Isthmians won the sixth. The first and second lines, sparked by centers Clarkson and Toland respectively, proved to be fast and well coordinated. With Nortie Knox in the goal, and Read and Captain Brown at defense, the team was at all times balanced and effective. In the season's first game in Madison Square Garden on the 20th of December, the School team defeated Deerfield by a score of 6-1. The team defeated St. Marks -4-2 here at school, and at Andover on the 19th of january they triumphed 3-0. On the 23rd of january, the S. P. S. bowed to a veteran Dartmouth J. V. squad, and although we lost by a 2-1 tally, the brand of play was the best of the season. The final game of February 2nd brought the climax of the season, when the School team edged out an excellent Exeter team by a score of 2-l, avenging 1aSt year's defeat. This finished the games for the year, the final tally being four ViCt0ri6S and one defeat. Club Hocleq HE First Team Club series, which ended in an all around tie, was exceptionally close and hard fought all season. The Isthmians, with a wealth of material led by Captain Read and Knox, proved too erratic to capture the championship. The Old Hundreds, with an abundance of young players, proved to be the steadiest outfit. The Delphians, underdogs at the season's beginning, improved steadily sparked by Captain Clarkson and Williams. The unusual amount of spirit displayed by all clubs throughout the season made the level of First Team Hockey very high this year. Brown, deGozzuldi Rowing HE 1946 Rowing Season on Long Pond opened on an extremely early date as it had the previous year because of an unseasonably warm spell during the latter part of March. The Halcyon and Shattuck Clubs each boated seven crews, an increase of one crew each over last year. Because of the early opening the season was extremely long and both Clubs produced well rounded crews. On Race Day the elements played tricks upon us and the weather was more like March than june. The day was overcast and showers rained down intermittently during the after- noon. The Halcyons began their clean sweep of the day by winning the Seventh Crew Race. This had a definite moral effect and all other crews of that Club went to the starting line deter- mined to win. The closest race of the day was the Fourth Crew Race, both crews being rated approximately the same. At the start the Shattucks gained a deck length which the Halcyons retrieved at the three-quarter mark. The boats rowed man for man until just past the half mile mark when the Halcyon Crew gained a slight lead which they broadened to half a length at the finish. The Third Crews both of which were manned by veterans was won fairly easily by the Halcyons. The Second Crew Race was captured by a definitely superior Halcyon boat. As the First Crews came to the starting line the Halcyons were intent upon making it a complete victorious day for their Club. Both boats started at a slightly higher stroke than was their custom but soon slowed to a 32 at which time the Halcyons gained a three-quarter length which they carried to the finish. Our thanks are due to Mr. Ducey, Mr. Andrews and Mr. Bodine for having so ably and enthusiastically coached the crews this season. This first post-war year of rowing has shown a rejuvenation of interest in the sport and it is hoped that Long Pond may again see ten crews from each Club. 3' 'N-: '- s-,M 'nf1ll!s 'M' uf law 1 . r, ' ,.,:q ,! ,, ,. , .,,.-if 44 W, W. S. winning by a score of 5-2. The final game with Concord High on Anniversary was rained out. Club Bmeball HE Isthmian Team, coached by Mr. Trefry, won the championship, with the loss of one game to the Old Hundreds, largely due to the hitting power of the infield and Worrall's steady pitching. The Old Hundred Club, backed by the hitting of Captain Toland, and Lovett's pitching, easily placed second, under the able coaching of Mr. MacConnell. The Delphians, coached by Mr. MacMillan, were obviously weaker than either of their opponents, relying on the hitting of Herter for what little strength they had. In the Anniversary Meet the Delphians, well prepared in advance by Captain Clarkson, won an easy victory with Clarkson and Bill Read sharing individual scoring honors. The Isthmians finished second with the Old Hundreds a close third. The score: Delphians 75M points Isthmians 60M points Old Hundreds 5 1 M points Messrs. Clark, Madeira and Monnier should be congratulated for their fine coaching which produced a very successful, if too brief, track season. T Kiflifllif BLY coached by Mr. Hall and Mr. McCreight the Tennis Team played three matches this spring. The first engagement was with Brooks and the St. Paul's Team triumphed by a score of 6-1. The next two matches were less successful, Groton and Exeter taking the S. P. S. Team by scores of 6-3 and 9-0 respectively. However, the season was highly satisfactory in that a great many candidates came out for the team, thereby indicating a rapidly reviving interest in the sport. Boxing HIS year Dick Whalen, as usual, produced a fine squad. The team spirit, ability and con- ditioning were well shown in the two boxing matches.
