Perhaps no other man has served on so many commit-tees as has Mr. Monie. His work as Chairman of the Entrance and Schol- arship Committees, as a member of the Disciplinary Committee, and in recent years as Vice-Rector testify to his devotion and ser- vice to St. Paul's. Mr. Monie has throughout his years here shown himself a real friend and helper to the boys and we are glad indeed that he and Mrs. Monie will continue -to live near the School he knows and has served so well. St. Paul's will certainly miss Mr. Ericson next year. Always cheerful, he showed his devotion to the School by his untiring ef- forts in all our athletics. The excellence of the gym and track teams in recent years is due largely to his hard work. He spent many hours of his time giving private exercises and massaging sore muscles, and much credit to the physical litness of the School is due to his example and leadership. We wish this splendid athlete the best of luck wherever he goes. Mr. Monzk Mr. Erzkson Foreword HIS year the Sixth Form has had added responsibilities owing to the large number of its members who graduated last year or left for the service. At Graduation, there are only fifty-eight of us left, and we hope that this group has lived up to its obligations. Many boys served as supervisors for both semesters, and the Council, in spite of an unusually difficult year, has functioned efficiently under the able leadership of Tom Armstrong. To Mr. and Mrs. Toland, who are leaving this year, we wish the bes-t of luck and we hope that they will come back to visit their many friends at the School very often. Ash Brook Farm has become too integral and pleasant a part of the School for us to be able to contemplate its being closed without genuine regret. The following have left the Form during the past two years to enter military service: Charles L. Andrews Gordon T. Cheney Marcus T. Reynolds Thomas M. Armstrong Lea M. Griswold Belford Richards Boswell A. Blackmer Nathaniel Hartshorne Frank S. White joseph R. Busk, jr. Clayton McMichael, Jr. We wish to remember them and the cause for which they are fighting. Let us hope that this year may be the last full war year, and that our successors, the present Fifth Form, will be able to graduate under peace- time conditions. JOSEPH W. DONNER, Chairman DONALD C. Blair led the Missionary Society to another year of excellent charity work. In addition to its vast number of tasks and duties, another Information Please program was pre- sented for War Stamp sales, and the annual fair and tea dance at Midwinter were more than usually suc- cessful. Although somewhat smaller, with large numbers of Sixth Formers lacking, the Literary Societies kept their proceedings on a high level. The light collation a-t the joint Debate again took the place of the din- ners: this debate was won by the Cadmean, with E. H. Tuck and C. M. R. Haines named best speakers. Mr. Lea and M. Brock led the Scientific Association in a year during which great interest was shown in experiments and papers. Many outs-tanding guest speakers were heard, unfortunately, there was no Exhibition at Thanksgiving. The Dramatic Club presented, at Thanksgiving, the comedy Arsenic and Old Lace, directed by Mr. and Mrs. Madeira. They also produced a play-reading of The Man Who Came to Dinner and co-oper- ated with the Glee Club in the Cavalcade of American Music at Anniversary. Brewster won the Fiske Cup competition for one-act plays. The Library Association enjoyed a good year, and the Book Fair and the Library Supper were most suc- cessful. The Cercle Francais, under Mr. King and E. H. Tuck, and der deutscher Verein, under Mr. Schade and W. P. Wood, increased their memberships, and both had exceptional years. The annual Verein picnic was held in the spring. Although no operetta was produced by the Glee Club this year the Cavalcade of American Music that was presented in 1942 was revived on Anniversary, with great success. This show was one of the most enter- taining that has been seen here, with many notable acts and songs. Also, there was carol singing at Christmas in the Upper and outside the buildings. THE NEW UPPER Football N PLAY and in sportsmanship the football season of 1944 lived up to the standards of St. Paul's School. The call of the services failed to cause any deterioration in the high quality of the games, and the usual spirit and skill was shown by all clubs. After nine years in the doldrums, the Old Hundred club won a well-deserved victory. Wi-th a strong backfield and a vastly superior line containing such players as Austin and Hollyday, then won four out of five contests played. The Isthmians, in second place, lost a backfield star, Swearengen, by injuries in the second game, they put up an excellent iight under S. P. S. captain Armstrong. The Delphian team, lack- ing suflicient material, nevertheless put on an excellent performance. The Old Hundreds won a hard-fought second team series, the Isthmians the third team championship, and the Delphian fourth was victorious. The Old Hundreds Won the fifth team series and the Isthmians the sixth. J S 12 S Hockey ITH a team substantially lighter than last year's, and with the loss of a great many players from last year's team, the School team nevertheless played spirited hockey and racked up a favorable number of victories. On their first line were F. Roberts, Ryerson, and high-scorer Lea: outstanding defensemen were Captain Waterbury, Austin, and O'Connor. A. Ramsay was the S. P. S. goalie. The season opened at New York's Madison Square Garden with the 8-1 defeat of an unpracticed Kent School team, on December 14. Following the hrst half of the club season, the team tied Harvard V-12 4 to 4 under ideal conditions, and defeated the Harvard team 7-0. The first defeat to be suffered at the hands of another school in many years overtook the team on their trip to Exeter, where they lost 6 to 5, on February 3. On February 7, the visit of the powerful Andover team left them defeated again, 3 to 2. The season ended with two decisive victories: over Concord High, on February IO, 7-O, and over Manchester, I5 to l, on February 14. The season thus ended with four victories, two defeats, and one tie. Coaches Harman and Chapin are to be congratulated fora season of spirited and sportsmanlike playing. Club Hockey ITH a powerful team well salted with S. P. S. players and substitutes of near-equal ability, a some- what over-confident Old Hundred team won the first team series decisively in four straight games. The Isthmians, sparked by Lea, were strong enough to crush an overpowered but gamy Delphian team. Throughout the season the level of play was very high, and the teams made the best use of generally favor- able ice conditions. january 13 Isthmian Delphian january l7 Old Hundred Delphian january 24 Old Hundred Isthmian February 19 Isthmian Delphian February 21 Old Hundred Delphian February 28 Old Hundred Isthmian March 2 Delphian Isthmian March 5 Isthmian Delphian THE S. Rowing 1945 saw another Shattuck year on Long Pond, although the victory was not as pronounced as that of last year-if the decisive margin of the first crew race is discounted. This year the trucks came back, and the season was hampered only by a shortage of gasoline for the launches. The Shattucks again took tl1e majority of Lower School races, and won the Dole Cup for the majority of races won in the Upper School. Race Day began with the Shattucks winning the seventh crew race by two lengths--a victory that did not count for the Dole Cup. The Shattucks also took the sixth crew race, by half a length, and also the Hfth crew race, by two lengths. In the fourth crew race, superior strength and length won for the Shat- tucks one of the close races of the day, by a margin of three-quarters of a length. In the third crew race the tables were turned, and the Halcyons won their first victory of the year. NV ith a somewhat stronger boating, the Halcyons kept ahead of the Shattucks' slightly better form, and won over the mile course by three-quarters of a length. By the second crew race the Halcyons won on the Captain's Bowl, with a sweeping victory. The strong snappy stroke set by the Halcyons was more than a match for the Shattucks, dogged through the year with bad luck. The Halcyons pulled ahead by a constantly increasing margin, to win over the Henley course by seven lengths in 7 min. 49.2 sec. In the first crew race, a far lighter and younger Halcyon crew rowed an excellent race against the su- perior strength and experience of the Shattucks. The blue boat held a slight advantage through the main stretch which they had gained at the start, and showed their speed in the sprint when they pulled away from the Halcyons to win by two lengths, on the Henley distance. Their time was 7 :40.5. For these performances, and the skill and spirit shown by all crews, we are indebted to Mr. Smith, Mr. Edmonds and Mr. Ducey, the coaches. THIC S. P. S. CREW Rrar: W, l'. Baseball Team swept through a three-game series against little opposition, with the exception of the game with Brooks School which was won 5 to 4. Sparked by the battery of NVaterbury and Toland, the team was powerful enough and worked smoothly together, well deserving their victories. Club Baseball HE club baseball season began early with the extraordinary spring of this year, and was subjected to foul weather later on. S. with a final score of 76 to 50, and the meet with Tilton Academy, against less heavy opposition, was won by a score of 84 to 42. In this meet a new junior pole vault record was set. At Anniversary some excellent events were seen. D. C. Lea of the Isthmians tied G. Lea's 1932 high- jump record. With Austin starring in the weights and with strength in other events, the Old Hundreds won the meet with 72MZ points, winning the Yale track cup for 1945. Delphian running, paced by Clarkson, de Gozzaldi, and Lewis, brought their score up to tie with the Isthmians for second place with 57M2 points for each club. When the effect of the war is considered, with the loss of Armstrong to the Navy and McMichael to the Marine Corps in mid-season-two of the stars of the Isthrnian club-the 1945 track season was quite successful. Praise is due to Mr. Clark, to Mr. Madeira who coached the weights, and to Mr. Ericson, the trainer. Boxzhg A ICK W'HELAN'S boxing room was probably more popular this year than ever before. Boys from all forms were to be seen working out under his able coaching, and in the two exhibitions that were held in the spring there was excellent boxing and a great deal of spirit. At Anniversary, J. C. Baldwin won the Hart Boxing Belt for the championship, being the first boxer outside of the heavyweight class to win that award. Tennzk ITH the early spring of this year, tennis saw a revival of interest and by the time April was over the S. P. S. team had been chosen, consisting of Captain Werner, Roberts, Seggerman, von Stade, and Lewis. The Exeter match was postponed due to persistently bad weather. However, sparked by the playing of Werner, and the coaching of Mr. H. H. Hall, the team defeated Brooks 5-2 and Groton 6-3 for a vic- torious season.
