It is cooperation, competition, sportsman- ship, and teamwork. lt's that U. S. history test, chewing gum, and detention halls, lunchroom chatter, pep rallies, and blue and White goalposts. It's interest and enthusiasm, pride in your BULLDOG'S BARK, and respect and admira- tion for your Alma Mater. True school spirit is the desire to make your school stand out above all others in every- thing that she participates in, whether it is the supporting of your athletic teams, the working toward acceptance by the Southern Association, or paying attention in class. The Mark of a Great Football Team The 1958 edition of the Saint Pauls football squad finished their rugged ten-game schedule almost evenly balanced in the won-lost column. Starting off the season with four straight losses, the Bulldogs appeared as though they would be the conference underdogs. However, homecoming festivities spurred new spirit into the Bulldogs and they defeated the strong Aberdeen team 18-O. After this win the Bulldogs went on to defeat Hope Mills, Elizabethtown, and long time rival Red Springs. Led by captains Jay Barker and Bobby Johnson, the Bulldogs finished third in the conference. Four members of the Bulldog crew were named to the all-conference second team: Rudy Lewis, Allen Norton, Jay Barker, and Robert Ransom. Up front were charging Bulldogs Jay Barker, Robert Ransom, and Allen Norton. Luckey Welsh, Pug Ivey, Rudy Lewis, and Bobby Johnson made up the talented backfield. All in all, it was a well-balanced team. These spirited Bulldogs proved that they were not only gallant winners but gracious losers. They held their heads as high in defeat as in victory, though their hearts were not light. This is truly the mark of a great team. Under the coaching of Walter Ragan, the 1958 baseball te am showed plenty of power and ability, although they were held back somewhat by the rain. Many of the previous players were lost by gradu- ation, but prospects for this year are bright. Back again are pitchers Luckey Welsh and james Earl Hagins. Back will be All- Conference first baseman Gene Jackson. jimmy Harrell, Douglas jackson, Donald jackson, and Pug Ivey will be back with their playing abilities and fighting spirits. During the year 1958, there wasn't an array of individual stars but there were nine good men who kept the game fired with action, accuracy, and determination. Starting off the year as a marching band, the Saint Pauls High School Band was an indispensable part of football season. The fourty-seven person organization entertained the fans with good fight music and diversi- fied halftime antics. Under the direction of Mr. 1. G. Blanton, the band kept the campus of St. Pauls High well supplied with music from pep rallies to assemblies the year round. Spreading the good will and good music of Saint Pauls High School, the band participated in exchange concerts and numerous parades, including Christmas parades, the Azaela Festival in Wilmington, and Band Day in Duke. Several of its individual members received the honor of attending the All-State Band Clinic in Rockingham and the Solo and Ensemble Contest in Duke. Through these activities, the band gained much of the valuable ex- perience needed to carry it through competition in the district band contest. The band climaxed their successful year when they presented the annual band concert in the Spring. .
