LAUREATES National Book XVeek observance was sparked by the local store of MAAS BROTHERS who offered prizes of books of the winners own choice for the bezt book reviews by pupils of the junior high school division. That entitled our ninth grade students to participate. The first green laurels of the school year to Elaine Sylvin and Robert Deeb. National Catholic Book Week observed dur' ing Catholic Press Month of February encouraged the young colony of writers and artists. The Catholic XVomen's Club of Tampa awarded to Carol Huska, ninth grade or freshman, a book for her prize winning poster. The poster was on display in the book week exhibit arranged by the Library assistants in the window of Maas Broth- ers. Americanism Essay Contest promoted by the American Legion Auxiliary awarded the first prize of 315.00 to Barbara Belford, sophomore, and second prize of 310.00 to Gloria Dona, junior, for their essays entitled: I-low We Can Preserve Our American Traditions. St. Paul's won all the prizes in the city-wide contest. Later. Barbara was called to Tampa to read her essay before the Auxiliary delegates assembled for their state convention. She received a cash award for the State prize. In the sixteenth annual essay contest on the subject: Freedoms Open Door the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at a program in VJilliam's Park awarded to Teresa Bergevin, sophomore, the first prize of 325.003 to John O'Brien, the second prize of 3l5.00. John, who is now a senior, has been winning prizes in this contest for three consecutive years. Honorable Mention Awards to Lillian Douhan, Joy McCaffrey, and Hubert Caulfield, seniors: and to Adelyn Langlois, junior. Brown while William Goodall looks on at right Advertising Club presented honorable mention prize of 35.00 to Cirace Dawson, junior, at a luncheon at the Detroit Hotel for her essay on the topic: What Advertising Means to Me. The FLORIDA CATHOLIC, the diocesan newspaper, conducted a Vocation Month essay contest with this title to develop: Florida: Fron- tier for Faith. Laurence Cunningham, sophomore, won third prize, a religious article. Essay contest sponsored by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons with the co- operation of the Auxiliary of Pinellas County Medical Society proposed this topic: Why the Private Practice of Medicine Furnishes This Country With The Finest Medical Care. In Pinellas County, the second prize of 325.00 was presented to Mary Lee Mattingly, a junior, at an award banquet at the Detroit Hotel. Her essay was sent to the State to be judged. Fifth prize of 310.00 to Joan Powers, a junior. Honorable mention prizes of 35.00 each to Elizabeth Mat- thews and Hubert Caulfield, seniors. The Propeller Club of Port of St. Petersburg launched an essay contest anchored to this topic: What the American Merchant Marine Means to National Security. At a luncheon at the Detroit Hotel. second prize of 310.00 was given to Lillian Douhan and third prize of 35.00 to John O'Brien, seniors. Honorable Mention to Elsa Kurth. senior. This completes our list of LAUREATES for this year, XVe take this opportunity of congratu- lating our other laurel wearers in the grades. An account of their splendid accomplishments can be found in the GRADES division of this PAULETTE. Margaret Carroll, senior, took second prize in the recently announced Veterans Liason spon- sored contest, VJhy I Am Proud to Be an American. Announcement came too late to in- clude a picture of Margaret receiving her prize of 3l5.00.

This is the completion of Sisters Twenty-first year at St. Pauls. She is the only Franciscan who is one of the original little band from Allegany, New York, who has never been changed. Stay right with us, Sister. You are the one who experiences that sense of wonder and elation when you End your favorite, St. Pauls, grown from uncertain and ailing childhood into vigorous maturity.
