Not only was it the Flyers first State Championship, but it also signified the conquering of the uneven odds. One odd was that our boys were outweighed by almost every team they played. Going into the season the squad and fans were hopeful of another outstanding season being 10-0 last year. However injuries to key personnel in early games could have dampened the team spirit. On the contrary, this seemed to fire second and third stringers up to work for the positions. This assuredly brought out the best abilities possible. So as the gaps were filled the Flyers again pulled through the 1969 season unscathed. The team reached its peak when it dubbed its second arch rival of the year, lVlapleton, 58-0. The first was of course The powerhouse from down the road, Edison. In this game the Flyers showed a tremendous come from behind spirit and upset the Charges 7-6 in the final six minutes of play. The climax of the season was announced at the football banquet on the evening of November 10. Bedlam broke loose in Norwalk and especially in front of St. Paul High School as it was announced by the Associated Press that Norwalk St. Paul was the number one Class A football team in the state of Ohio. Icing was put on the cake as many team members made All-State and All-American teams. Final recog- nition was given the coach who made us Number one, Coach Gottfried, as it was announced that he had tied for Coach of the Year in the UPI poll in Ohio.
