They have spent day after day, year after year. in teaching, guiding, and encouraging us in all our difficulties, from the time we entered the portals of St. Paul's to the present time when we regretfully must leave the hallowed precincts of our dear Alma Mater. Through their loving care and kind so- lieitude they have ever watched over the progress in our studies as well as in our character training and spiritual enlightenment. VVe were happy to find the Sisters there to offer the key to the bright City of Success. Initiation was the first trial. Much to our-relief, the Seniors were mcrcifully inclined and no worse mishap than a possible case of indigestion resulted from the occasion. Sister Mary Francella, our home room teacher, was most competent in impart- ing religious and secular training. Indeed, our first year in high school was a delightfnfl assurance of the greater joys for the future. VVl1en duty called we were obliged to continue our way. This time our number was decreased, for eight students deviated from the path of learning. Under the supervision of Sister Mary Angeline. our Sophomore year was a decided success. Half the battle had already been fought-we CLASS li. the class of '32 being of sound mind Pj bequeath and will to the present junior class the things we don't want. including studies, work, lectures. and also ou'r ability to comprehend diflicnlt problems. To the sophomores we leave the good example we have always displayed in study and assembly hall. VVe also wish them to adopt our love of the family firesidc, that is, our preference in spending a nice quiet evening at home. A To the freshmen we bequeath our sophistication and sense of humor. also the knack of laughing loud enough at the wrong time. The next year's freshmen are to merit the joys and sorrows of high school life. Considering the magnitude of the pleasures in comparison with the CLASS Energy VVins the VVayl VVith this motto be- fore us when entering upon our high school career, we were given encouragement and hope which tended to overcome dominating fears of failure. Under its basic guidance, during the last four years we have attained a creditable education. gleaning all honors and achievements according to the mentality with which God endowed ns. were then called juniors. This year seemed filled with many successes. The junior edition of the Look-A-Head received great praiseg this was due entirely to the earnest supervision of Sister Mary Lillian, our director and home room teacher. The .lunior-Senior Excursion seemed to be the last final act of our junior year. It proved an extremely memorable one for all. Seniors! The very word seems to thrill us and is more like a dream than a reality. In hearts we are still the younger classmen striving to be the leaders. Sister Mary Norbertine, our principal and home room teacher, prepared us spiritually as well as mentally to combat the battles of life. This last year sped quickly for it was filled with activities that time could not be heeded. Glec Club, Class Play, and innumerable studies kept us happily busy as well as contented. Enviously we leave the field to other laborers, but our hearts will always be within the center of their activities. WILL sorrows we consider this a very worth-while in- heritance. VVe contribute to Miss Ruth Hafner thc remain- der of our pencils in recompense for lead wasted in issuing demerits to honorable seniors. VVe also leave her peace and quietude in the study hall. To our beloved principal we will our good will. to have and to hold, forever and ever. To the entire faculty we give our gratitude and a sincere promise to remember them in our prayers. In VVitness whereof. we, the SENIOR CLASS. af- fix our oflicial seal on this ninth day of June, in the year of our Lord. one thousand nine hundred and thirty-two. Signed. sealed and acknowledged by The Class of thirty-two MOTTO As we leave the portals of our cherished Alina Mater, we are determined to carry this motto with us. VVhen future days are filled with sorrows or regrets, may these four small words again utter their encouragementg God grant that they float be- fore ns in the fiashing hue of crimson. Energy is required for the accomplishment of any noteworthy actg therefore. it is only energy that can win for ns. the VVay. the Truth and Life-our goal. 10 -s s ll CF J 7 L00 I-NEA SENIOR CLASS DIARY SEPTEMBER Tuesday H. Later they were served a delicious break- fast by the juniors. At 8 P. M. the strains of the Military Escort played by the school orchestra under the direction of Mr. Carl L e n z, they filed gracefully down the aisle and took their places on the stage. Lucille Betschman delivered the Saluta- tory address in a v e r y praiseworthy manner. She wel- comed all to the ex- ercises. Minglcd with the welcome were strains of sorrow at parting. Follow- ing this, the class sang th e Lost Chord in three part harmony. It was a beautiful and ap- pealing song. C'lif ford li r o w n. Valedictorian. e x- pressed sincere ap- preciation in the name of the class for the sacrifices and Very Rev. Francis J. Macelwane generosity of the priests. sisters. parents and all who have contributed to their educational advantages. The Very Reverend F. J. hfacelwane. speaker of the evening, gave a beautiful and inspiring address. In a masterful way he placed before the graduates the ideals and principles that become Catholic men and women. He stated that their duty to God should be first and foremost. while duties involved in various stations of life should be secondary. He emphasized loyalty to country, parents. school and friends. 'Being a man of outstanding character and intelli- gence he frankly stated that education is still in its minor stages at graduation.. and that great success is only to be attained by the broad and far-reaching knowledge of various subjects. The graduates will always hold his memory and advice sacred, for he has given them true signifi- cance of life. The overture Zenith', was played by the orches- tra after which Father Curtin presented the grad- uates, and Father Forst conferred the honors. He also spoke a few words of counsel and encourage- ment. Clifford Brown was awarded a gold medal for his high scholastic attaiuments. Four of the graduates who were members of the high school orchestra were awarded a gold pin for their fidelity in punctuality and attendance at prac- tice. They are Lucille lietschman, Mary Xlissler. Philip Link and Donald Young. The exercises were beautiful in their simplicity and were enjoyed by an extremely large number of relatives and friends. VALEDICTORIAN ANDQSALUTATORIAN We announce with pleasure the honor students of the class of ,32, namely, Clifford Brown and Lucille Betschman who have won , spectively. f'lif't'ord Brown for themselves the honor of Valedictorian and Salutatorian, re- In connection with his high scholastic standing, Clifford was elected president of the class in his freshman and sophomore years. During his four years of high school life he has entered many lit- erary contests in which he reaped honors and awards. Lucille has btitill our faithful L-A-H editor for the past year, class secretary for three years. pianist in the orchestra for three years, and an active member in many other activities. These two students have labored incessantly throughout their high school career and it is only right and just that such an honor Lncille Betsch man be given them. They have done much to bring honor and fame to St. Paulis and we feel certain that they will continue to do so. 12 YN-A .45 S Qs .I N K LIBRARY L-A-H OFFICE ' 'Ai ' A ' 13 LOOK A I-lI-Iffklfl ALL'AMERICAN HONORS OOK us over! Our monthly editions of the Look-A-Head which were entered in the All- American critical service, conducted annually by the National Scholastic Press Association, with headquarters at Pillsbury Hall, Minneapolis, Minn., has been awarded All-American honors. This is the highest rating a publication can attain. The purpose of this National Scholastic Press Association service is not to create interschool riv- alry. but to provide an agency by which staffs may be aided in giving their schools and communities a significant publication, and to help the staffs in the solution of their problems. The system of rating seeks to create within the school a year-to-year effort to improve the quality of the school publications-to establish new ideals. Each school was provided with a manual and score book showing the methods used by the judges in rating the papers. Criticism was based upon news writing and editing, news values and sources, editorials, entertaining matter, headlines, makeup. This is the second time that All-American honors was granted to Look-A-Head, the first time being in 1930. Much credit is due those junior and senior journalism students who contributed regularly to the monthly editions which met with so much favor from the N. S. P. A. critical service, and also from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association from which the Look-A-Head merited second honors. Though the present senior staff regrets that they shall no longer edit any Look-A-Heads they feel that their efforts were greatly repaid by receiving such a distinction from the N. S. P. A. and they arc assured that next year's staff will maintain the high standard that was theirs. CLASS FLOWER Our class has chosen the American Beauty be- cause of its appealing richness and dazzling btauty. The Rose being symbolic of love may have been our motive for selecting it, for we are in love with the world in general. We love the sweet memories of childhood and of school days. We rapture in the present, and gladly accept the joys and opportuni- ties it renders us. But, perhaps, it is the future that beckons us to follow. As we are now on the threshold of life, we long for the veiled events that have been stored away so long. As the years pass we shall find greater work to accomplish, far greater than any other we have yet performed. Since Great Things VVere Never Done in a Hurry , it may take years to fit ourselves for the tasks we will assume. So it is with the rose which also requires time to mature from a knotty bud into the graceful and fragrant form of a superb flower. OUR EDITOR li are proud to present Lucille lietschman as the editor of our school paper during the year of 1931-32. Her ability to write clever and forceful articles has merited her this position. Possessing a distinctive person- ality she has managed the tremendous task of edit- ing the school publication in an outstanding manner. As an energetic, plucky and creative character she has inspired her associates to higher achieve- mentsl Through her untiring efforts and words of encouragement to the staff members, the l.ook-A- Head has merited the honor of being classed as an All-American publication. Much forethought, clear- thinking and sound advice on the part of our editor has enabled this paper to merit such high recogni- tion. Her loving smile, and generous disposition has won for her the respect and admiration of all the students. Her energy and talents were not confined only to the school publication but she was in the center of every school activity. Her abilities and ambitions were combined with the unusual sweetness and charm that distinguished her actions. Always cheerful and optomistic she made the hours spent working on the paper happy ones. Her future is a positive success if she maintains the high ideals and ambitions which have exemplified her work on our school paper. Although it is hard to leave school and all the joy it combines yet she can have the satisfaction that whatever she has accom- plished was due to her earnest and sincere effort. Her many sacrifices may be an incentive to succeed- ing editors of our famous school paper. CLASS COLORS Crimson and Gray, the colors we have chosen. must be kept from all selfishness and wrong, for to us their significance is magnanimous. The Crimson is typical of the sun of joy and righteousness that guides us ever onward. It is a brilliant hue that speaks of courage and 'inspires the inner soul and pulselses heart into activity, by the radiation of its vitalizing force. The Gray conveys to the mind, thoughts of life. Like a cloud it flashes across the horizon, tempering the glaring sun to fit the needs of the eye. VVe must weigh this well and not forget that it bears the memory of the cloud of years gone by, that led the followers by day, and by night as a liv- ing pillar of fire. . We, as a class, hope to be guided through life by our cloud of 'Gray when life is garnished with suc- cesses, and by the pillar of Crimson in the hour of darkness and affliction. 14- CJ Us ll CH -J 5 1 l i . 4 ci Fil - - -. O preserve the high standard set by preceding St. Paul's football teams, the goal of the l93l squad which boasted but three lettermen. They accomplished this feat by giving a great battle and a fine display of football to powerful and bigger teams as well as to weaker opponents. Although encountering hard luck, the Streaks kept fighting throughout and were regarded as dangerous by all their opponents. The season's record of three games won, one tied. and four lost, does not rightly show their ability. They outscored their adversar- ies 60 to 65 and through their strong defensive strength allowed no opponent to score more than 13 points. ln the opener, September 19, the Crimson war- riors lost a close battle to Norwalk Hi's heavier Class A team by a 7 to 0 score. Improving with ex- perience the Saints breezed through with two suc- cessive victories over Vermilion 7 to 0 and Tiflin Junior Order Reserves 21 to 6. In another thriller. October 17 the Streaks came 4 from behind in the fourth quarter to tie St. Xvende- liu's at 7-all. A penalty kept the Streaks from pushing over the winning touchdown in the closing minutes. The following week saw the Streaks meet their worst beating of the year, a 13 to 0 defeat at the hands of Wlellington. Again the next week the Criinson-clad pigskin artists met defeat, this time to Port Clinton's heavier Class A outfit by :1 l2 to 7 score. The Streaks were forced to play without Mack and Dublo. injured baektield stars. Hampered by the swampy conditions of the field. a lighter St. Paul's team bowed to Crestline Hi. I3 to 8. Three times the locals carried the ball within the 5-yard line and three times Old Man Hard Luck stopped them. To Show that they were a strong football team. the inexperienced St. Paul's warriors took the field in the final game of the season with a supposedly stronger St. Mary's squad and walloped them 19 to 7 in a thriller which featured a long touchdown run by Mack and a 96-yard run by Mellein. gs J s Cp f131g?1 -O Cl A lri IZ it BASKETBALL l 1 1 gi, Standing! 1'liI'I':,r:l Brown. Gabele completes his fifth year as athletic director at St. -v l'aul's with a wonderful record. His championship basketball teams for the past two years is a fine exhibition of his remarkable ability in coaching. The great majority of winning games and the ef- fective manner in which they were played by the team shows evidence of the proper training. l'nder Coach Gabele's expert guidance and tutelage St. l'aul's cage teams fought their way into the finals at Willard Tourna- ment and were beaten in the finals by one point in the Sectional tournament at Find- lay. lfair play and real sportsmanship have been evidenced in all the games the Gabele- men have played and their record is an en- viable one. OUR CHEERLEADERS VVe are proud to take this opportunity to make known to our readers our peppy cheerleaders-- lilleu Brown and Philip l.ink. seniors. Ruth Strat- ton, sophomore. 'l'hcse students have put forth their greatest en- deavors to make the athletic season of 1931-32 a huge success. 'l'aking into consideration the amount of work de- manded of the seniors. those two members found time to organize pep meetings. invent new yells and create a spirit which penetrated every lover of sport. Ruth Stratton is to be commended on her good -.upport and we hope she will be back next year to continue the good work. Yve also wish to give recognition tothe littlc midget leaders. 'l'rudie lialtes and Norbert Roth. Coach Gabele knows men and knows how to make men. His players reflect his train- ing in their gentlemanly conduct and man- liness and above all in their courage. He has the knack of appealing to the student in the right way and the ability to hold their interest and attention. He has also built up most successful foot- ball teams. He instilled in his players fine courage and lofty ideals and the principles of good sportsmanship which will remain with them through life. Under his expert guidance. track has rapidly developed into a major sport at St. Paul's School. Coach Gabele is held in the highest es- teem by players and fans. It is hoped he . will continue the fine work al St. Paul's Hi. by turning out more good grid and cage teams in the future. LEAGUE OF SIX NATIONS In a meeting held in Upper Sandusky specific de- tails were given out concerning the new football league which St. Paul's joined with five other teams of this district. This league has just been named the League of Six Nations,-a name which repre- sents a confederacy of six Iroquois tribes of Indians living in this part of the state and banded together for their mutual protection. This league, likewise. is banded together to pro- mote friendship and bring the schools closer togeth- er for the promotion of better sportsmanship. As each tribe had a name so the respective teams will possess Indian names. The local team will be known as the Tuskcaroras, St. iVendelin's as the Mohawks. Calvert as the Senecas. Upper Sandusky will be called the Onendas. Carey. the Ceyzxgas. and Crestline. the Onendagas. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Having won the class championship for two con- secutive years we are proud to acknowledge our faithful little squad. This team has played together throughout its high school career and has acquired the knack of fast pass work. quick thinking and accurate shoot- ing. At the tournament drawing. the seniors drew the sophomores. and defeated them by an easy margin. As a result of this victory they were scheduled to play the juniors. However, with a little more than luck. the juniors managed to nose out the seniors. thus copping the title although they found that their opponent guards: Elizabeth Fries, I'ig'lltQ1'll'21lll'l'N Manlct. cen- terg and Alverna Schafer left, were plenty hard to shake.
