FOREWORD Therefore, if any young person has embarked his life in the pursuit of knowledge, let him go on without doubting or fearing the event. Let him not be intimidated by the cheerless beginnings of knowledge, by the darkness from which she springs, by the diff¬ iculties which hover around her, by the wretched habitations in which she dwells, by the want and sorrow which sometimes journey in her train; but let him ever follow her as the Angel that guards him, and the Genius of his life. She will bring him out at last into the light of day, and exhibit him to the world comprehensive in acquirements, fer¬ tile in resources, rich in imagination, strong in reasoning, prudent and powerful a bo ve his fellows in all the relations and in all the offices of life. I I MESSAGE SAINT PAUL ' S COLLEGE ({formerly Saint {Paul’s {Polytechnic {Institute) FOUNDED BY JAMES SOLOMON RUSSELL—1888 (INCORPORATE!) 1890) I.AWRENCEVTLLE, VIRGINIA 9 February 1962 The Graduating Class of 1962 Saint Paul ' s College Lawrenceville, Virginia Dear Friendsi Four years ago you were selected from a large number of applicants for admission to Saint Paul ' s College and at the time of your selection you were told that the college was obligating itself to make an investment in your future. The college has kept that obligation. It has made the promised invest¬ ment. You are now on the threshold of the completion of your college work. The extent to which the investment has been a sound one can only be determined by the extent to which you as graduates demonstrate that you possess the attributes of strong Christian character, sound scholarship, high personal integrity, the will to succeed in the most highly competitive environment that the American Negro has ever known, and loyalty and devotion to your Alma Mater. In demonstrating that you possess these attributes you will not only prove that the investment has been a sound one, but you will bring to your lives that success and happi¬ ness to which I believe each alumnus is entitled. THE DEAN I congratulate you on your graduation, wishes go with you. My best Sincerely ygurs. - - ... E.-Oones Dean of the College THEJivmb
