President’s Message Dear Saint Paulites: It is again my privilege to felicitate another class of seniors on the occasion of their attainment of the graduation milestone at Saint Paul ' s College. Of course, you have my congratulations and best wishes for success and satisfactions in all of your endeavors in the challenging years ahead. But it is, most of all, of the present and prospective challenges to be faced that I wish to speak in this final word to you as undergraduates on the threshold of graduation. World-wide conditions, it can be said advisedly, as never before confront individuals no less than nations and the society of nations with unparalled problems and challenges. In the nature of things that would be inevitably in a growing Atomic Age and in the infancy of the explorations and onset of the Space Age. But there is more: peoples by the millions in formerly colonial or dependent areas are gaining their national aspirations for autonomy, independence, or freedom a mere decade since their former political masters held out no hope for the fulfillments of the immediately past year and the year or two ahead. Ghana and the Republic of Mali, both named after long-ago nations of cultures, are on the map of Africa, replacing old names and conditions; Guinea stands beside them in independence; no less than form new nations are scheduled to join them in the year 1960. Parallels are available in the Near and Far East, in the Pacific and elsewhere. All these and conditions related to such developments make it imperative for the college graduate to recognize the larger roll he must assume in helping to shape the community, the region, the nation, and the world in which he lives in the image of the society free men and women deserve and desire to live. It is a frustrating time in which you live. Man ' s inhumanities to man often seemunabated. Conflicts plague regions, nations, and idea- logical blocs of nations. As never before in the possession of a code of lasting values, such as Saint Paul ' s have sought to instill in you, can prove a fortress of faith and a beacon in a dark time. On these hallowed grounds you have been exposed to proved educational disci¬ plines in an environment of Christian fellowship, in the hope you each would become the caliber of citizen prepared for the roll awaiting each of you. In the years ahead, try faithfully to represent all that is finest and best in a Saint Paul ' s education. A college is no bigger than its parts; the students and graduates are Saint Paul ' s parts that lend character to the integrated whole. And, remember, we are with you all the way. Good Luck! Sincerely yours, Earl H. McClenney President 7
