PAUL ' S POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE Lawrencevi I le, Va. DEDICATION PRESIDENT EARL H. MC CLENNEY HOME OF THE PRESIDENT A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT TO: THE MEMBERS OF THE 1957 GRADUATING CLASS Dear Friends: I am aware of the many problems you have encountered in producing this Year¬ book and I commend you for the intelligent approach to the solution of those prob¬ lems. In the years ahead this Yearbook will serve as a source of information and also 0 a reminder of your experiences at your Alma Mater. As I view the world situation today—the frustrations, conflicts, and tensions, both at home and abroad—I recognize more than ever the need for college graduates with a background of Christian education and understanding, with a desire to serve human¬ ity, and with the courage to act. It is my hope that each one of you is such a person. Saint Paul’s expects you to be such a person and has therefore tried to develop you to meet this challenge. As you turn these pages in the years ahead and as you recall your college life, please do not forget Saint Paul’s. You must always remember because Saint Paul’s will never forget you. With best wishes for your success, I am AN ACADEMIC Sincerely yours, PROCESSION Earl H. McClenney President ADMINISTRATION, PERSONNEL AND FACULTY m Dr. Earl H. CLASS POEM PARTING When day is quickly, ending And night’s long shadows come, We often count our blessings And many things left undone. Our task is never ending, Our victory so far, But we will keep on striving % Until we find our star. Before our day is over, Before our task is done, Comes the glad sounds of parting, Farewell to everyone 0 school, with all your splendor, We’ll miss you so, I fear; Your hallowed grounds so tende 1 Will echo through the years. As we sing this our song to you, Our hearts are loyal, firm, and true. Thinking of four years w e have toiled here, Preparing to teach our youth. Farewell, to all our teachers; We know you’ve done your best. You’ve shared with us your knowledge to help meet future tests. We thank our teachers and our parents, Who have helped us along our toilsome way Farewell, the time has come to say goodbye. Words by George W. The team showed fine teamwork in outscoring the hard fighting Bears. The second game, however, marked the beginning of a season-long losing streak for the Tigers. West Virginia State College and Bluefield State College handed the Tigers set¬ backs in their next two encounters. Nor were the Tigers able to fare any better in their next fourteen games. Lady Luck seemed not to be riding with them. Many of the games, though, were hard-fought, closely-contested, thrill-packed contests. £9 Robert Meadows 60 TENNIS TEAM Left to right, Front Row: Brice, Holland , W eston, Moyler, Harris, Penniston, Walker, Carter, McLaughlin, Windley, Trainer Prince. FOOTBALL SQUAD FOOTBALL The 1956 edition of the St. Paul’s Football Tigers, stocked with an array of freshman talent, opened their campaign against Norfolk State on October 28, at Norfolk. The Tigers displayed great power in whitewashing the Statesmen 19-0. However, on the following weekend, the Tigers went down to a strong J. C. Smith University team in a hard fought 7-0 loss. The next two games saw the Tigers absorb two white¬ washings at the hands of St. Augustine and Bluefield State. It seemed that the Tigers just were not able to get started in their encounters with CIAA foes. Throughout the season, the team was unable to lift itself from the throes of a losing streak. The season ended with the Tigers owning a 1-8 record. Despite the poor showing of the team, the performances of some of the players indicated that the Tigers may be a much improved team next year. 63 FLOATS PATRONS Dr. and Mrs. R. R.
