ARTHUR WILSON Auto Mechanics CLASS HISTORY On September 5, 1948, two hundred and five students embarked upon a modern adventure. Leaving behind them the carefree existence of high school days, they came onto the campus of St. Paul ' s Polytechnic Institute with many vivid mental pictures evoked by that magic phrase college life. At the sight of the waving grass, the leafy sycamores, the campus walks and rolling hills, we knew we ' d stumbled upon a Utopia. The Freshman placement examinations brought us to our senses with the impact of a small bomb. After three days of this mental torture, we believed ourselves to be well orientated to this new life. However, along came some all right people with some all wrong (to our thinking) ideas of initiation which served to bring us to our senses even more. (This time with the impact of a large bomb.) Only the strong influence of our Advisor, Mrs. Frances Thurman, kept us from going off the deep end about those canes, bows and haircuts. Guided by her, we enjoyed an exciting Freshman Ball and finished the year with the usual confusion attendant to frosh groups. September, 1949, found us back again, this time in the mantle of the wise fools. Not quite as strong in number but with redoubled energies, one hundred and thirty-four huddled under the comforting wing of our Advisor and fought off our second year studies. The class canteen A Night In Hawaii that has not yet been seriously challenged, and a loving cup for the best campus group skit, added to our prestige. We left for home in May feeling that all things considered, it had been a wonderful year. Only one hundred and three of our original number returned to the fold in September, 1950. An important year was ahead of us ... a busy year. We needed the efforts and resources of every class member to make it successful. The adminis¬ tration injected a stimulant in the form of another Advisor, Mr. Edward Strayhorne, and work, work, work was the keyword. Work we did, and produce we did as anyone who attended the fabulous Starlight Canteen or, Junior-Senior Prom will readily attest. Curricular matter was inspected, digested and assimilated and the year ' s end well showed the result of three years ' hopes, strivings and successes. Confidence, poise and a new sense of values were our mantles now. There were many mixed feelings accompanying our return last September. The pride of attainment was tinged by the sadness inherent to the last mile of any profitable journey and we embarked upon it determined to make this mile a mem¬ orable one. Mr. Joseph Thompson and Miss Beatrice Moore combined energies at our helm and we set out to chart a rather foreboding sea. We set out to do the best in our studies, to make our yearbook a best, to improve our school wherever and whenever possible. In short, we set out to do things. And we did. YOUNG, CAESAR 22 Prince St. Georgetown, S. C. A FAREWELL TO ST. PAUL By Shirley Williams The time has come for us to part, But as we go we leave our hearts,— To dear St. Paul we ' ll always be true, Showing your teaching in all we do. Through the years that we have passed, In training for life ' s greater tasks, You ' ve made of us what we wanted to be. You ' ve shown us what we wanted to see. So as we leave this school so dear, Memories of us will linger here. No more among you will we dwell, But of thy teachings we shall tell. So now we bid you a fond adieu, The graduating class of ' 52, This final thought we leave with you, Keep God near in all you do. Adapted from Chopin ' s Etude in E Major Now we leave thee, our school so dear, We must pass on but mem ' ries linger here, What mem ' ries dear! Toils and pleasures of the yesterday we knew, Fade away, fade away. When we are gone, this truth we know, The love we feel for you will always grow. This too we know . . . Though the years may dim in measure, Many thoughts, yet will we treasure; Golden dreams of golden days with you, And loves we knew, Youthful friends so true, Til! our days on earth are through. R. W. CLASS THESPIANS CLASS POLITICIANS SUCCEED a c STUDENT AFFAIRS CLASS DREAMER It is with mixed emotions that we begin this final page. The most apparent sig¬ nificance is, of course, that we ' ve finally come to the end of our yearbook. Of far greater import, h owever, is the fact that our undergraduate days at St. Paul ' s are hereby consigned to the past. We enjoy this moment because it represents a certain triumph after four years of labor toward this goal. We regret this moment for we realize that we have not always done our best in all endeavors and now our time is up. We are elated by the fact that we ' ve completed a stage of our journey through life and that we are now better prepared for stages to come. We are depressed by the knowledge that many people and many things we love will now live only in memory. Yet, glad¬ dened or saddened by this, leave we must. In departing, we wish we could evaluate our accomplishments; we wish we could catalogue our mistakes; we wish we could determine our collective contribution to our Alma Mater. But this is impossible, therefore we can only hope, that because of our efforts, we are leaving more than we found; that the lives we have touched, we have added to; and that we will be remembered and loved, as we love and remember.
