Miss Welander During the year Donald Stankie moved to St. Paul, so we elected Floyd Hunter as the new Student Council member. Ruth Sward was the Freshmen Candidate for Queen of the Winter Carnival. The big event of the year was a party at the gymna- slum. In the tenth grade we were much wiser. That year most of us took biology. Remem- ber the nine cats we cut up? Our class offi- cers were as follows: President -- ...... .... P at Waldner Secretary ............. Lois Obriham Treasurer ........... Eunice Doville Student Council Member .......... -- ------------------- Norman Holmes Class Adviser' ........... Miss Zieske Bette Mae Hall was our candidate for the Carnival Queen. This year the big event was our initiation. The girls dressed in old house dresses. They had to wash their hair the night before and couldn't comb it out the next day. High heels and colored anklets were worn on their feet. No make-up was allowed. The boys wore earrings with their hair greased and parted in the middle. They had to wear make-up, short pants above their knees, half socks, and no shoes. Each one of us had to Wear a sign with a silly say- ing on it. Cute, weren't we? In the latter part of the year we gave a Return Party for the seniors. The class officers for the Eleventh Grade Were I President ....... ---- Fred Brandes, Vice President ......... Irving Jerry Secretary - .... ....... H arriet Moore Treasurer ............ Lois Obriham Student Council Member .......... -- --------------------- Dick Godfrey Class Adviser .......... Miss Teagles This year we have a Sadie Hawkins dance. Helen Hartigan was our candidate for Queen of the Winter Carnival. We sold stationery to make money. We started our class play, You Can't Take It With You . We selected our theme for the Prom Songs of the Island. No one really thought we were going to give it, but we did. Ruth Sward was elected to the National Honor Society. The Twelfth Grade class officers were: President -. 1........... Dick Godfrey Vice President ........ Willard Nollet Sewefary .............. Ruth Sward Treasurer .......... Dorothy Cooper Student Council Member ..,,.,,,,,,, ------------------ Irving Jerry, Jr. Class Adviser .... .... M rs. Gasperlin This year we really got down to busi- ness with Dick Godfrey making our class money with the pop corn machine, and his organization of the selling at the Little Five tournaments. We gave a play this year to the surprise of the rest of the school. Salad Days was the title. Lois Obriham was our candidate for the Carnival Queen. The class took a trip to Hastings. Dorothy Cooper and Fred Brandes were elected to the National Honor Society. lhxmc-l lI PARK-HI STAFF Slauulilllz llufl in riglill: lVlully-Ann liriffin, Lois Olwilium. Hvlvn Haxrlignn. However, we hope to express in this verse the love for each other we felt from the first. When.we were Freshmen and took English nine, We drove poor Miss Zeizke out of her mind. As sophomores we had a wild biology class, Miss Ludden stopped teaching-alack and alas. Our Junior class play would have been a suc- cess, If we'd worked a bit harder and fooled around less, And now we are Seniors and leaving forever, The teachers all hope that we'll come back never. Pat and Al are liked by all, Stars in both football and basketball. Our football captain, Donald Gundy, Spends his time eating sundaes. i'Johnny, Johnny, that's the sound We hear whenever Jeanne's around. Then there's Isabel, a cheerful gal, To all of us she's been a pal. Ruth's a leader in our class, A cheerful, smiling, happy lass. To Sophomore girls Irv's a dream, Like Sinatra, for him they scream. We would have seen everything under the sun, If Willard didn't have his work all done. Here's a gal that's really super, A leader in everything-Dorothy Cooper. Helen admits she would like to go, To the Marine base in San Diego. Dick makes the money, strange at it seems. He paid for the annual with the pop corn machine. Lois has dozens of men on her string, Blue eyes, blond curls, she's really keen. Molly-Ann is new this year, But she gets around a lot, we hear. Florence is quiet and refined, 1t's hard to find a girl of her kind. Bette Mae is full of pep, When you're with her you're really hep. Freddy Brandes is alreet, A scholar, leader and athlete. Thinking of her handsome Marine. This ends our poem, We now Say uadieux, Farewell to the Park High, Teachers and underclassmen too. Margie is a Navy fan, His name is Johnny-what a man! I I SOPHOMORE INITIATION, OCTOBER 1945 This year was our big event which the Sophomores won't forget. The girls were dressed with overalls cut off above the knees. They wore T shirts. Men's shoes with dif- ferent colored knee stockings. They were blackened like Negroes on one side of their face, arms, and legs, on the other side of their face they wore make-up. Their hair was braided with different colored ribbons. They carried a man's lunch bucket full of bricks. The boys were dressed in long white underwear with shorts over the top. One oxford and the other foot was bare. They wore wide brimmed ladies' hats and very much make-up. They were carrying large ladies' purses. In the afternoon we had a very exciting program with one exciting moment which was David Briggs being rocked by Carol Zacharias and fed warm milk out of a baby bottle. In the evening we had a dance at the gym. We think the Sopho- mores were all very good sports. 10 PARK-H1 Front row nleft l'uvL lf , Adviser. PIGTER H A M M UND ..,. ..,. After these two set-backs the boys finally got going and reached their peak against Breek. The sea- son's results were four victories and two de- feats. This is the first time in four years that the Park has lost the Little Five Champ- ionship. The Park will lose six of its members at graduation but has a number of veterans returning. These veterans along with many promising prospects and under the able guidance of Coach Howard I. Smith, hope next year to win the championship. The graduating members of the team are: Captain, Donald Gundyg Left end, AI llannestadg Center, Pat Waldnerg Quarter- back, Fred Brandesg Fullback, Irving Jerryg Right end, Dick Godfrey. Having only one returning veteran Coach Joe Tou- signant had his hands full trying to find a winning combination. Although the team was unsuccessful in defending its Little Five Title, it did win its initial game in the Sub- District, defeating Forest Lake 28 to 27. From there the boys went on to Hamline Field House and the District, but they were unable to match the height and speed of Stillwater, who went on to the semi-finals of the State Tournament. Namely, Chick- erie Chick out on a big assignment. Come along with me, sha-la sha-la, and you shall see the Sth wonder of the world. The Grad- uating Class of 1946, still in a ba-nan-i-ka since twenty years ago. The first one on the list is Florence Allen, who has won an academy award in the boxing ring at Madison Square Gar- den and is now giving free boxing lessons. As we look down the street we see the huge sign, That's a Joke, Son , and inside we see Fred Brandes, Jr. selling moron joke books. Next in our view we see Margie Ber- feldt modeling at Newport's Society Club in the latest fashions in bathing suits. As we enter the Park on the corner we find Dorothy Cooper on her soap box giving her daily lecture on a Woman's Rights. As we stroll further into the Park we see a little pop-corn stand with the name Dick's Corny Shop painted on it and in- side we see Dick Godfrey filling a 5c bag of pop-corn. Next we zoom over to Cudahy's where we find our famous student Tiny, fDonald Gundyj with a large official silver star pin- ned on him, reading Cudahy Sweeper. My next dash takes up to the Prom Ball Room where you can see our own gray-hair- ed Molly-Ann Griffin doing the Hi lun Fling dance on stage. Next we take a powder over to the Sugar Bowl in time to sse our own Bette Mae Hall win the title of heavy weight champion of the world from Joe Louis. Now we're all set to gaze off on to a little island where we find a hula hula dan- cer and sailor husband, Al Hannestad, lay- ing around bossing the jobs of five little Hannestads. OK! Back to a large house on Dirt Road. As we peek into the huge library we find an old maid, Helen Hartigan, writing her fa- mous monthly column for the Times Have- n't Changed paper. The column is Man Sicology . And now what do I see before me but Irving Jerry, playing his well-known Con- cheto in F sharp on his famous picalo. ln his famous studio we've got the instruments, you teach us how to play them. And now we find a very rich lady, fthe former Jeanne McMillan! whose collection of diamonds in the past has made her one of the most prominent ladies of Newport So- ciety. Let's slip down to Mryphy's Pool Room now and what do we see? None other than Pat Waldner, the well-known Bar Tender. Next over to the Advertising Depart- ment where we find Harriet Moore posing for a magazine, displaying her vim and vig- 01' from eating Wheaties. And next we see our own famous Snake Charmer, Lois Obriham. She is performing with the Dizzy Brothers' Circus with her pet snake, Buzz , Let's take a gander over to the Sport Show. Here comes that terrific and glam- orous Ruth Sward. She is famous for her most daring trick of all, driving a motorcy- cle with one hand. And now we come to our great travel- ling salesman, Willard Nollet. We regret to inform you that Willard's mind went blank while taking magazine subscriptions for the senior class and he is still going from door to door selling books. And who is driving that semi-cattle truck coming down the street, why our mus- cle-bound Isabel Witzke. She drives for Swift and Company. Now we'll tell you who is the only one to get anywhere in this world. It's none other than the Park-Hi Annual Advisor-Howard Smith. PARK-HI ' 1 1, -1 1 15 !l !! 11 .11 li ,1 16 ii 111. 1.
