Dear Graduates of I952: lt has long been awaited, this day of graduation. You stand today where stood those others whom you envied yesterday. lt is a solemn moment in your life. Something sadly irrevocable there is about it: a door has been closed forever on one part of the world you have known. lt was a joyful, almost carefree world. Despite the ordinary frets and pains and pangs of school days - so often exaggerated you now admit A there were grand times, great friends, and some real satisfaction at lessons well learned and assign- ments well done. There is a genuine twinge of regret as you realize how far the hours of student happiness outnumber the hours of student gloom. The associaf tions and events of the past years at St. Pau1's School are among the first treasures you place on the shelves of memory. Nfay they retain their luster and their youth to refresh you when the way ahead grows hard and grim. You are now departng from the haven ol the parish classroom. Till now you have been on the receiving end of things almost exclusively. Other people - to whom you owe lifelong gratitude - have worked for you, prayed for you, instructed you with N a love and solicitude born of God. Your decisions were made for you, you were told every step of the way, and, even though sometimes unwilling, you were V 1 shielded from youthful follies and mistakes as care- Rhv- BERNARD Mlllll'-N' fi-1'l'-S fully as could be. .Xs your sense of responsibility I Ol lk ASSISTANT PAST! DR developed it was ever directed in the proper channels by wise and upright counsellors. You were being equipped all the time with the armor and weapons, the intelligence and good judgment, tht courage and strength of will necessary for one who must travel through a dangerous, deceptive world to reach his home with God in heaven. The day has come in which those preparations are deemed coin- U plete. Cod grant they were sufficient. Cod go with you on your journey! Thither winds the road you tread, To the solemn city of the dead. Hope then is buried neath the sod? Nay, but rests immortal with its Cod. The way of life lies upward and, with each new height gained, one must pause to sight his goal again and gather his strength anew for the next ascent. The broad gentle slopes at the foot of the mountain change to forbidding steeps and daring cliffs as one approaches its peak. The trail grows uncertain, the obstacles and dangers multiply. From the vantage point to which you have climbed at graduation the world looks beautiful, wide and adventurous. You feel its challenge in your blood: you hold your heads proud and high to meet it. But remember - the goal of life lies up, up where the blinding splendor of the snowcap tilts against the sky - where heaven is. The mountain path man must beat to God is narrow and strenuous. The greatness, the gaiety, the glory of the world is illusory. lts glamor must not seduce you into a feeling' of false liberty and security. One misstep and fatal calamity can befall you. ' ' ' t pltttv mubblc do not gunble your life or soul on it. Head up! Don't rush. One step at a time carefully taken is worth a thousand hurried steps that have to be retraced. ln your veins will throb a new, strange sense of independence and self-reliance, but it dare not make you rash and head- strong. Seeking and heeding the advice of your elders - parents, priests, teachers - will spare you much grief. Above all will your Catholic faith sustain you when the going is tough if you live it day by day devoutly as you have been taught. The future is yours for the making. A future without God is the stuff of hell. XVith God even the darkest dawn has its untold depth of solace. XVhether religious, married, or single be your vocation, kernelled in your soul is the beginning of a saint. lVhat will you do about it. Graduates ol '52? lhe world is z '- l -3 'Q J f 1 1 God bless you. Bernard nl. Mullen, Cl.l'l'.S. 5
