It is difficult to put in words or pictures the good which each of us has gained through our studies and associations in a Catholic environment. The effects of this Catholic education will be felt in the future years as we, the graduates of St. Paul's, take our place in life. You stand today where stood those others whom you envied yesterday. lt is a solemn moment in your life. Something sadly irrevocable there is about it: a door has been closed forever on one part of the world you have known. lt was a joyful, almost carefree world. Despite the ordinary frets and pains and pangs of school days - so often exaggerated you now admit A there were grand times, great friends, and some real satisfaction at lessons well learned and assign- ments well done. There is a genuine twinge of regret as you realize how far the hours of student happiness outnumber the hours of student gloom. The associaf tions and events of the past years at St. Pau1's School are among the first treasures you place on the shelves of memory. Nfay they retain their luster and their youth to refresh you when the way ahead grows hard and grim. You are now departng from the haven ol the parish classroom. Till now you have been on the receiving end of things almost exclusively. Other people - to whom you owe lifelong gratitude - have worked for you, prayed for you, instructed you with N a love and solicitude born of God. Your decisions were made for you, you were told every step of the way, and, even though sometimes unwilling, you were V 1 shielded from youthful follies and mistakes as care- Rhv- BERNARD Mlllll'-N' fi-1'l'-S fully as could be. .Xs your sense of responsibility I Ol lk ASSISTANT PAST! DR developed it was ever directed in the proper channels by wise and upright counsellors. You were being equipped all the time with the armor and weapons, the intelligence and good judgment, tht courage and strength of will necessary for one who must travel through a dangerous, deceptive world to reach his home with God in heaven. The day has come in which those preparations are deemed coin- U plete. Cod grant they were sufficient. Cod go with you on your journey! Thither winds the road you tread, To the solemn city of the dead. Hope then is buried neath the sod? Nay, but rests immortal with its Cod. The way of life lies upward and, with each new height gained, one must pause to sight his goal again and gather his strength anew for the next ascent. The broad gentle slopes at the foot of the mountain change to forbidding steeps and daring cliffs as one approaches its peak. The trail grows uncertain, the obstacles and dangers multiply. From the vantage point to which you have climbed at graduation the world looks beautiful, wide and adventurous. You feel its challenge in your blood: you hold your heads proud and high to meet it. But remember - the goal of life lies up, up where the blinding splendor of the snowcap tilts against the sky - where heaven is. The mountain path man must beat to God is narrow and strenuous. The greatness, the gaiety, the glory of the world is illusory. lts glamor must not seduce you into a feeling' of false liberty and security. One misstep and fatal calamity can befall you. ' ' ' t pltttv mubblc do not gunble your life or soul on it. Head up! Don't rush. One step at a time carefully taken is worth a thousand hurried steps that have to be retraced. ln your veins will throb a new, strange sense of independence and self-reliance, but it dare not make you rash and head- strong. Seeking and heeding the advice of your elders - parents, priests, teachers - will spare you much grief. Above all will your Catholic faith sustain you when the going is tough if you live it day by day devoutly as you have been taught. The future is yours for the making. A future without God is the stuff of hell. XVith God even the darkest dawn has its untold depth of solace. XVhether religious, married, or single be your vocation, kernelled in your soul is the beginning of a saint. lVhat will you do about it. I'xl I Golden Jubilee This year of 1952 marks the Golden jubilee Anniversary of our Sponsor, Sister M. Augustine. On the nineteenth of March, St. .Ioseph's Day, she coma pleted hfty years in the religious life. Two score and ten years spent in devoting her time toward helping others in their educational achievements so that they may better fulfill their purpose in life - to glorify God and to save their souls. Xvith this noble ambition in her heart, she has offered her life to God and has devoted her time and talents to teaching in the schools of the diocese. We wish to congratulate Sister Augustine in this, her Golden jubilee year, and offer our sincere appreciation for her time and patience spent in teaching us during our four years high school at St. Paul's. We pray that we shall always remember the ideals and principles which she has instilled in our hearts and minds, and shall endeavor to display them in our everyday life. Many pleasant memories are with us now and, as we draw aside the curtain of the past, we see again September 7, l948. It is recorded as an important and eventful day, for it marks the beginning of our High School career. Eager little Freshmen we were, unaccustomed to the superior ways of the upper classmen and the un- familiar methods of High School instructions. Feeling quite timid and con- spicuous, we lived up to the traditional Freshmen title Greenie . Before many days passed we began to feel more at ease and to lose our shyness. We elected Paul Orr president of the class. Then we eagerly took part in the many activities which the school offered. Under Sister Caroline's able assistance we successfully completed our first year of High School. 1 9 49- 50 On Se Jtember 6, we returned to St. Paul's So Jhomores. We were sli 'htlv I I S . decreased in number, but full of pep and eager to begin a prosperous year. Second year Latin and Geometry kept us more than busy, but by patience and perseverance we managed them at last. We elected Michael Solms to be our president. It was in this year that we were received into the C.Y.O. - a mem- orable event. Could we ever for et? With the helm of our s onsor, Sister 8 I P Henrietta, our so Jhomore ear came to a successful close. I Y '50 - ' 5 1 ln September 1950, we commenced our junior year at St. Paul's and assumed our famous name of jolly juniors . One of our first activities was the election of class officers with the result that Tom McNamara was elected president, and Tom Huneck, editor of the Spotlite. We really had a busy year. We turned out two issues of the Spotlite, one at Christmas and one in june. We gave a very successful junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. -Ioan Stilwell was chosen Prom Queen, and Mary Lou Guerrero, Senior, and Dorothy Miller, junior, were her attendants. Time sped on and almost before we were aware of it, thanks to our sponsor, Sister Aurelia, we reached the Senior rank. 9 5 1 - 7 5 2 Last September we entered upon our last year in St. Paul's High School. Seniors at last! We felt rather free as there were no upper-classmen to order us around. We again elected Mike Solms as president of our class and we chose Carolyn Williams to be the editor of the Paulist. Sister Augustine, our Sponsor, guided us on safely through this our busiest, best and Ill0St important of our high school years. The great day of our Commencement-the day so long anticipated- is fast approaching. We trust that we have merited the good will of our fellow students during our stay at St. Paul's. We hope that they will always feel that they have been benefited by our example. Ami when we receive our diplomas from the hands of our Pastor, may they be the premiums of good work well done, and a pledge that the line training acquired here may live forever in our lives. Carolyn Williams '52. I7 Senior Class Prophecy lVhat a day! Yes, a day long to be remembered for on this day the St. Paul's graduates of 1952 had their first reunion in the old home town, Marion. They came from far and near and gathered at the Parish Hall. It was just ten years ago that the twelve of us graduated from our dear Alma Mater. How it all came back to us now as we beheld the old stage on which we received our Diplomas from our Pastor Msgr. McCarthy! But everything was different now - how we had all changed! Older, wiser, but still laughing and so glad to meet each other again after a lapse of so many years. We told of our experiences and of our careers. This is what I learned: Carolyn Williams has the Sunny Cab Company of New York City . Her motto is, You feel every bump in the road . Don Monks and his Solid Senders have become famous: he and his band are working in the Metro Goldwyn Studios in Hollywood. Paul Orr is the inventor of a new soap that doesn't float, doesn't foam, doesn't clean, it just keeps you company in the bathtub. Peggy Glover seems to have the most dangerous job in New York City - that of cleaning the windows of the Empire State Building. She says that Carolyn rooms with her Qfunlj. Michael Solms has just returned from a trip to Africag he has become a world renowned head hunter. His collection is called, Mike's Magnificent Managerie . We were not surprised to learn from Tom Huneck that he had acquired a very famous circus known as Pingling Brothers. His main attraction is Mary .lane Bowser and her If you don't believe it come and see it side show. He says it really brings in the money. Bill Kriegbaum emigrated to Iceland and this was his first trip back in ten years. Bill has developed a secret formula for fuel in hot rods. john Sleven is really popular with the girls: he is giving lessons in a girls' athletic class. I hear the girls are really having a rough time. Paul Dwyer is traveling from planet to planet on concert tours. P. D. developed his voice by yelling on the basketball court. Last but not least is Tom McNamarag he has joined a troop of Wild West Cowboys and is roping squirrels in Central Park. Regarding myself I am manager of a noted dancing school in Washington D. C. Many pupils come to my studio to learn my style of dancing. The time passed all too quickly, and l was obliged to take leave of my old classmates. We all declared that the day had been pleasantly spent, and it had recalled many thoughts of our school days and the familiar faces we hope never to forget. Dorothy Miller '52 18 ami? The Trojans, with plenty of material, had a poor season, winning only two of eighteen games, although most of the games were fairly close. The two victims were Banquo, 44-211, and jefferson Township in an overtime battle, 62-61. Paul Dwyer with 193 points for a 10.2 average, was the Trojans' leading scorer: but we had balance rather than one big pointmaker. The Trojans had four other cagers above the 100 point mark - Vinnie Belville with 148, Don Monks with 131, Cappy Orr with 111, and Tom Huneck with 1114. Six of the Varsitymen, Dwyer, Monks, McNamara, Huneck, Kriegbaum and Orr are Seniors. Tom Shildmyer and Manuel Guerrero, one of the top reserves, are juniors, Vinnie Belville and Dick Barsha are Sophomores. The Trojans used both styles of defense - zone and man to man. ln the sectionals, the Trojans were swamped by the Van Buren Aces, 61-22. The tension during the game was high but we just cou1dn't get going. Norbert Getz, our coach, has done a fine job throughout our season play and we hope he will be back next year. Within its sacred portals many happy days have been spent, days which we will sometime long to live over. And if, through God's grace, our life is a success, everything gained must be gratefully acknowledged to the selfless spirit ol' our good Sisters who strove to mold us into dutiful Catholic men and women. Our gratitude may not be written down, but never will we forget our dear Alma Mater and all the memories it contains. The Seniors '52.
