Human efforts, even when they are laud- ahle and not inspired hy motives that are lallacious, are unequal to this great under- taking: it is august religion, alone, aided hy divine grave, that can prove equal to the greatness ol' the task, and, with the active cooperation ol' all, bring it to a happy conclusion. Heretofore his life has been regulated. There has been a careful balancing of time between work and play, between prayer and study. Now the young person who steps across the threshold of the school into the world must establish his own balancing of time. His judgment in this matter will determine the success or failure of his future. Each individual has burning within him an intense desire to be successful. No one wants to be a failure. Yet, success rarely comes without a proportionate effort. The graduate of a Catholic high school knows very well, in an elementary form at least, the efforts he must put forth to be successful. He knows that success or failure will come in proportion to his efforts. A careful selection of a career and the proper attention to it will make more sure his financial success. A solicitude for ones soul and the observance of the Commandments of God and His Church will insure his spiritual success. The graduate knows this. It is now up to him to set his foot upon the right path and follow it manfully. How wonderful it is to see our Catholic young people cleave faithfully to the principles which their parents and teachers worked to instil in them. How tragic it is to see others throw these teachings to the winds and embark upon a life that violates everything that they were taught to hold sacred. These leave a trail of broken hearts and ultimately break their own. ln the dim distant future, the graduate of 1950 often may look back to this year. He will remember the joys and festivities which surrounded his graduation. He may also remember that it was the Holy Year, the year designated by Pope Pius Xll as the year of the great return and the great pardon . How happy the graduate of 1950 will be if he can look back through the years with a clear conscience and know he has directed his spiritual and mental powers to the glory of God and the salvation of his soul. How great will be the peace of soul of the one who has accepted the graces, indulgences, and pardons of the Holy Year, and has used them to begin a truly Catholic adult life. A life in which one devotes himself with all his energies to the task of being an obedient servant of God and a loyal citizen of his country, is the life for which the graduate has been prepared. When you, dear Graduates of 1950, come to the end of your life, which will be your Eternal Commencement, may it be said of you as it was of Our Divine Savior, our friend and examplar: He hath done all things well . The pastors and the faculty of your Alma Mater wish you every success in life. They accompany you on your journey of life with their prayers. They know that in your lives there will be sunshine and shadows. May the sunshine warm and gladden your hearts. May the shadows cause you to turn to Him who can make all sorrow change into joy. Sincerely yours in Christ, FREDERICK O,BRlEN, C.PP.S., Faculty Advisor 12
