-D 41 3, THE HOLY YEAR Qllontinuedj Father , Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father, and as well, one Our Father , Hail Mary , and Glory be to the Father for Our intentions, and in addition the Creed, We grant and bestow mercifully in the Lord a full indul- gence and pardon of all the punishment due to sin. We also declare that the faithful can gain the jubilee indulgence either for themselves or for the faithful departed as often as they fulfil the prescribed conditions. The four principal intentions chosen by the Holy Father for the 1950 Holy Year are: I. Sanctification of souls through prayer and penance, and unshakable fidelity to Christ and the Church. 2. Action for peace and defense of the Holy places. Defense of the Church against renewed attacks of her enemies and beseecha in the true faith for those wandering in error, infidels, and those without God. 8' D 4. Actual realization of social justice and works of assistance in favor of the humble and needly. The purpose of the Holy Year can be summed up in the words: Holiness through Prayer and Penance . Although the particular 2lCt of penance most recommended is a pilgrimage to Rome - a thing not possible for everyone - yet, the rest of the world can share in the spirit of the Holy Year by prayer, mortification, and a more fervent spirit of reparation for their sins and the sins of others. The Holy Year will close with the solemn traditional ceremonies on Christmas Eve, 1950. The Holy Doors will again be walled up for another twenty-five years -or until the next Holy Year of Jubilee is proclaimed by the reigning Pontiff. Donald Clapp, '50. May peace, the object of Our ardent yearning, return at long last to the hearts of allg to families, to individual countries and to the community of nations: may those who suffer persecution for justice's sake Qhfatt. V. 105 be blessed with that dauntless fortitude which adorned the Church with the blood of martyrs from the very beginningg may refugees, prisoners, homeless exiles be enabled as soon as possible to Hnd their way back to the fatherland they cherish: and may the consolations of divine grace lighten the pain and anguish of those who are suffering. Pope Pills Xll. - .Pi -, -1 9
