Heavenly Father, Thou who seest all things, who searchest and dost guide the hearts of men, make them responsive, in this time of grace and salvation, to the voice of thy Son. May the Holy Year be for all men a year of purification and sanctificationg of interior life and reparation, the year of the great return and of the great pardon. llestow on those who are suffering persecution for the Faith thy spirit of fortitude, to unite them inseparably with Christ and his Church. Protect, G Lord, the Vicar of thy Son on earth together with all bishops, priests, Religious and all the Faithful. Vouchsafe that all, both priests and laity, the young, the mature and the old, united intimately in thought and affection, may become as a solid rock, against which the fury of thy enemies will break in vain. May thy grace enkindle in all men love for the many unfortunate people whom poverty and misery reduce to a condition of life unworthy of human beings. Arouse in the hearts of those who call Thee Father a hunger and thirst for social justice and for fraternal charity in deeds and in truth. Grant, O Lord, peace in our days - peace to souls, peace to families, peace to our country, peace among nations. May the rainbow of peace cover, with the sweep of its serene light, the land sanctified by the life and passion of thy Divine Son. God of all consolation! Deep is our misery, grave are our faults, countless our needs. But greater still is our trust in Thee. Conscious of our unworthiness, we lovingly place our lot in thy hands, uniting our weak prayers to the inter- cession and the merits of the most glorious Virgin Mary and all the saints. Grant to the sick, resignation and health, to young men, the strength that is born of faith, to young girls, the gift of purity, to fathers, prosperity and holiness for their families: to mothers, success in their mission of rearing their children? to orphans, affectionate protection: to the refugees and prisoners, their father- land: and to all men thy grace, in preparation and in pledge of the unending happiness of heaven. Amen. PIUS PP. Xll. Our Holy Father has written this special prayer for the Holy Year and attached both partial and plenary indulgences to it. There is a partial indulgence of seven years for each recitation, and a plenary indulgence if it is said on thirty consecutive days. Thus, the plenary indulgence can be gained as often as twelve times during the year by reciting the prayer on thirty consecutive days each time. il .7 41- 4, f 1- 41 6

And he has broken down the door As sons of Peter did so oft before, That all the tired world may enter in, Sinners and saints, and be absolved from sin. On -Iune 2, 1948, the feast-day of his name-saint Eugene, His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, proclaimed that the Holy Year would be celebrated in Rome through- out the twelve months of 1950, and bade the faithful of the world to join together in the Holy City during that time to venerate the Tombs of the Apostles and the See of Peter. Since 1475 A.D., every twenty-fifth year has been proclaimed from the Vatican as Holy Year. Since the first jubilee or Holy Year in 1300 A.D., untold millions of the Faithful have responded to the call of the Holy Fathers and journeyed to the Eternal City. During their quiet prayers at hallowed shrines, they have gained peace of mind and soul, strengthened in spirit and fortified with Divine Grace, these devout people have returned to their homes with a new-found peace of heart, contentment of mind and sanctity of soul. Now, more than ever, there is a need for the public prayer and penance required to gain the Jubilee Indul- gence. God has been outraged to such an extent that prayer and penance alone can save the world. That was the message given at Fatima by our Blessed Mother - indeed, the message of Calvary itself. We must purchase with our prayers and sacrifices the international peace for which we yearn, and that interior peace which alone can draw together all the peoples of the earth. On Christmas Eve, 1949, the Holy Father opened the Holy Doors at St. Peter's and gloriously inaugurated the Holy Year as the climax to colorful ceremonies, prayers and a papal procession. An extraordinary plenary indulgence is granted by the Pope during the Holy Year to all Catholics throughout the world who visit Rome in order to venerate the tombs of the Apostles and the See of Peter. His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, has stipulated the requirements for the 1950 jubilee Indulgence in a special Bull of Notification to the Faithful. It reads as follows: During this year of expiation, to all the faithful who duly confess their sins in the Sacrament of Penance, who receive Holy Communion and visit once on that day, or on different days and in the order of their choice, the Basilicas of St. john Lateran, St. Peter's in the Vatican, St. Paul's on the Ostian Way and St. Mary lNlajor's on the Esquiline, and recite in each basilica thrice the Our ll i ' ' ,Af l il 8
