This year has been one not only ol' study but of lasting friendship, the memory of which will remain long with us. Over all the year's activities, Marys guiding love has shone steadily helping us to persevere to the end. Equipped with the principles of a good Catholic education, we are ready to step forth into the world. XVe carry with us that noble-mindedness that is Mary's spiritual gilt to the world. SF 36 SF XVC, the Senior Class of 1950, dedicate this seventeenth issue of the Paulist to His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, as a token of our great happiness and sincere gratitude for his proclaming this year another Holy Year in which, by prayer and good works, men may plead with the Heavenly Father for mercy in these troubled times. Heavenly Father, Thou who seest all things, who searchest and dost guide the hearts of men, make them responsive, in this time of grace and salvation, to the voice of thy Son. May the Holy Year be for all men a year of purification and sanctificationg of interior life and reparation, the year of the great return and of the great pardon. llestow on those who are suffering persecution for the Faith thy spirit of fortitude, to unite them inseparably with Christ and his Church. Protect, G Lord, the Vicar of thy Son on earth together with all bishops, priests, Religious and all the Faithful. Vouchsafe that all, both priests and laity, the young, the mature and the old, united intimately in thought and affection, may become as a solid rock, against which the fury of thy enemies will break in vain. May thy grace enkindle in all men love for the many unfortunate people whom poverty and misery reduce to a condition of life unworthy of human beings. Arouse in the hearts of those who call Thee Father a hunger and thirst for social justice and for fraternal charity in deeds and in truth. Grant, O Lord, peace in our days - peace to souls, peace to families, peace to our country, peace among nations. May the rainbow of peace cover, with the sweep of its serene light, the land sanctified by the life and passion of thy Divine Son. God of all consolation! Deep is our misery, grave are our faults, countless our needs. But greater still is our trust in Thee. Conscious of our unworthiness, we lovingly place our lot in thy hands, uniting our weak prayers to the inter- cession and the merits of the most glorious Virgin Mary and all the saints. Grant to the sick, resignation and health, to young men, the strength that is born of faith, to young girls, the gift of purity, to fathers, prosperity and holiness for their families: to mothers, success in their mission of rearing their children? to orphans, affectionate protection: to the refugees and prisoners, their father- land: and to all men thy grace, in preparation and in pledge of the unending happiness of heaven. Amen. PIUS PP. Xll. Our Holy Father has written this special prayer for the Holy Year and attached both partial and plenary indulgences to it. There is a partial indulgence of seven years for each recitation, and a plenary indulgence if it is said on thirty consecutive days. Thus, the plenary indulgence can be gained as often as twelve times during the year by reciting the prayer on thirty consecutive days each time. il .7 41- 4, f 1- 41 6 11, rw' gf 1 f-.glmi .f l',',Q'l?f 1 ., .1i,,.,b5+ X I A 'X U'v-a N,-fr P Y Al' OUR I3lil,OX'l-QIJ IHSHUI' His 1-Qxr:l4.1.1,1'-xczx , 'llllf Nlusr Rllivlful-ixn DIOHN CL. l5liNNli'l l', 13.17. And he has broken down the door As sons of Peter did so oft before, That all the tired world may enter in, Sinners and saints, and be absolved from sin. On -Iune 2, 1948, the feast-day of his name-saint Eugene, His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, proclaimed that the Holy Year would be celebrated in Rome through- out the twelve months of 1950, and bade the faithful of the world to join together in the Holy City during that time to venerate the Tombs of the Apostles and the See of Peter. Since 1475 A.D., every twenty-fifth year has been proclaimed from the Vatican as Holy Year. Since the first jubilee or Holy Year in 1300 A.D., untold millions of the Faithful have responded to the call of the Holy Fathers and journeyed to the Eternal City. During their quiet prayers at hallowed shrines, they have gained peace of mind and soul, strengthened in spirit and fortified with Divine Grace, these devout people have returned to their homes with a new-found peace of heart, contentment of mind and sanctity of soul. Now, more than ever, there is a need for the public prayer and penance required to gain the Jubilee Indul- gence. God has been outraged to such an extent that prayer and penance alone can save the world. That was the message given at Fatima by our Blessed Mother - indeed, the message of Calvary itself. We must purchase with our prayers and sacrifices the international peace for which we yearn, and that interior peace which alone can draw together all the peoples of the earth. On Christmas Eve, 1949, the Holy Father opened the Holy Doors at St. Peter's and gloriously inaugurated the Holy Year as the climax to colorful ceremonies, prayers and a papal procession. An extraordinary plenary indulgence is granted by the Pope during the Holy Year to all Catholics throughout the world who visit Rome in order to venerate the tombs of the Apostles and the See of Peter. His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, has stipulated the requirements for the 1950 jubilee Indulgence in a special Bull of Notification to the Faithful. It reads as follows: During this year of expiation, to all the faithful who duly confess their sins in the Sacrament of Penance, who receive Holy Communion and visit once on that day, or on different days and in the order of their choice, the Basilicas of St. john Lateran, St. Peter's in the Vatican, St. Paul's on the Ostian Way and St. Mary lNlajor's on the Esquiline, and recite in each basilica thrice the Our ll i ' ' ,Af l il 8 -D 41 3, THE HOLY YEAR Qllontinuedj Father , Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father, and as well, one Our Father , Hail Mary , and Glory be to the Father for Our intentions, and in addition the Creed, We grant and bestow mercifully in the Lord a full indul- gence and pardon of all the punishment due to sin. We also declare that the faithful can gain the jubilee indulgence either for themselves or for the faithful departed as often as they fulfil the prescribed conditions. The four principal intentions chosen by the Holy Father for the 1950 Holy Year are: I. Sanctification of souls through prayer and penance, and unshakable fidelity to Christ and the Church. 2. Action for peace and defense of the Holy places. Defense of the Church against renewed attacks of her enemies and beseecha in the true faith for those wandering in error, infidels, and those without God. 8' D 4. Actual realization of social justice and works of assistance in favor of the humble and needly. The purpose of the Holy Year can be summed up in the words: Holiness through Prayer and Penance . Although the particular 2lCt of penance most recommended is a pilgrimage to Rome - a thing not possible for everyone - yet, the rest of the world can share in the spirit of the Holy Year by prayer, mortification, and a more fervent spirit of reparation for their sins and the sins of others. The Holy Year will close with the solemn traditional ceremonies on Christmas Eve, 1950. The Holy Doors will again be walled up for another twenty-five years -or until the next Holy Year of Jubilee is proclaimed by the reigning Pontiff. Donald Clapp, '50. May peace, the object of Our ardent yearning, return at long last to the hearts of allg to families, to individual countries and to the community of nations: may those who suffer persecution for justice's sake Qhfatt. Heretofore his life has been regulated. There has been a careful balancing of time between work and play, between prayer and study. Now the young person who steps across the threshold of the school into the world must establish his own balancing of time. His judgment in this matter will determine the success or failure of his future. Each individual has burning within him an intense desire to be successful. No one wants to be a failure. Yet, success rarely comes without a proportionate effort. The graduate of a Catholic high school knows very well, in an elementary form at least, the efforts he must put forth to be successful. He knows that success or failure will come in proportion to his efforts. A careful selection of a career and the proper attention to it will make more sure his financial success. A solicitude for ones soul and the observance of the Commandments of God and His Church will insure his spiritual success. The graduate knows this. It is now up to him to set his foot upon the right path and follow it manfully. How wonderful it is to see our Catholic young people cleave faithfully to the principles which their parents and teachers worked to instil in them. How tragic it is to see others throw these teachings to the winds and embark upon a life that violates everything that they were taught to hold sacred. These leave a trail of broken hearts and ultimately break their own. ln the dim distant future, the graduate of 1950 often may look back to this year. He will remember the joys and festivities which surrounded his graduation. He may also remember that it was the Holy Year, the year designated by Pope Pius Xll as the year of the great return and the great pardon . How happy the graduate of 1950 will be if he can look back through the years with a clear conscience and know he has directed his spiritual and mental powers to the glory of God and the salvation of his soul. How great will be the peace of soul of the one who has accepted the graces, indulgences, and pardons of the Holy Year, and has used them to begin a truly Catholic adult life. A life in which one devotes himself with all his energies to the task of being an obedient servant of God and a loyal citizen of his country, is the life for which the graduate has been prepared. When you, dear Graduates of 1950, come to the end of your life, which will be your Eternal Commencement, may it be said of you as it was of Our Divine Savior, our friend and examplar: He hath done all things well . The pastors and the faculty of your Alma Mater wish you every success in life. They accompany you on your journey of life with their prayers. They know that in your lives there will be sunshine and shadows. May the sunshine warm and gladden your hearts. May the shadows cause you to turn to Him who can make all sorrow change into joy. Aid sf 'r.',f .1 nn 5'-w -A gn ipefrospecf ln the history of St. Paul's High School, September 6, 1946 is remembered as an important and eventful day, for it marks the beginning of the High School career of the present Senior Class. We were lively little Freshmen, unaccustomed to the superior ways of our upper classmen, and the unfamiliar methods of High School instructions. We were rather frightened, and experienced a taste of inferior complex. Algebra and Latin proved a stumbling block to most of us but we bore up bravely though sometimes with sighs and groans. The year passed all too quickly and before we realized it, summer was calling usp so we bade farewell to our Freshman year. ln September l947, we returned to St. Paul's as Sophomores, happy to meet old friends as well as new ones. We were slightly less in number, but full of pep, and eager to begin a prosperous year. Second year Latin and Geometry kept us more than busy, but by patience and perseverance we managed them at last. There was sorrow when Rev. Father Krapf, who had been our friend and instructor in religion, left us on account of ill health. There was joy when his successor, Rev. Father O'Brien, cheerfully assumed his duties. We took great interest in athletics and other activities, and our Sophomore year came to a happy close. I In September, I9-18, we began our junior year at St. Paul's. We had become more serious now and realized that we were upperclassmen and were expected to be leaders. We began our year's activities by electing class officers with the result that Miguel Guerrero became our President. Our Christmas and june issues of the Spotlite were pronounced very fine. Our Junior-Senior Prom was the big event of the year. It took place on May 29 at the Spencer Hotel. Patricia Bott of the Senior Class, was chosen Prom Queen and her attendants were Delores Sharon and Barbara Monzon. Time sped on and almost before we were aware of it, our junior year had come to an end. ln September, l949, we, eighteen in all, entered our last year in St. Paul's. The undergraduates were surprised at the dignity and all-important air we assumed, We felt rather big as there were no upper classmen over us. We took up the responsibility of securing funds for our school annual, the Paulist. The Christmas card campaign proved a great success as all the school generously gave a helping hand. This last year has been the busiest, best, and most interesting of all. Soon it will be over and then our days at St. Paul's are ended. However, the memory of them will long remain. We shall always remember the true and lofty aims that were born in us in our work here, and we shall make our lives such as will bring pride to our beloved Alma Mater. We will always remain Boosters. Class of '50 Witnesses: Lenora Finley Donald Clapp op fc E HG? QJI' he i VZCLWZH .4 N, It was twenty years ago, on .Iune 2, l950, that I and seventeen classmates graduated from St. Paul's High School in Marion, Indiana. Now, as I sit in R ' ,wry-,g, x my beautiful garden, midst fragrant flowers and green U' shrubbery, enjoying memories of happy school days, 1.1 I find myself becoming a little drowsy. It is that I f .... bewitching hour of evening, an ideal time for reverie. Suddenly I hear a voice coming from somewhere near. On looking about, I notice a little bird perched on a branch of a tree opposite me. Gazing in surprise at the pretty creature, I hear it say, Do not be alarmed - I am Bob-o-link. I know you are thinking of your classmates of old and are wondering what has befallen each of them. Listen closely and I shall give you an account of them : the world by her unique headgears which demand fabulous prices. Russell Burton has become a famous athlete and is now a football coach at Notre Dame, following the Knute Rockne method. vi- 1 Y Y , 1 if 24 ij' 41' Mary Alice Carrico has long since been married. She and Ralph are happy with their family, living on a large ranch in Texas. Donald Clapp, who was always ready for laughs and fun, was discovered one day by a producer, and is now starring in the comedy, I-lambonef' Betty Munday, after serving four terms as the White House Cook, and be- coming acquainted with all state secrets, is aspiring to become the President of the United States. Rodney Clouse has made a fortune in California gathering snails and selling them to Chinese restaurants. Marie Gilvin has been a nurse for many years and is now Superintendent of Nurses at the National Veterans' Hospital in Washington, D. C. james Marshall emigrated to Alaska where he discovered a new species of icebergs warranted to keep their bulk and weight in torrid zones. Barbara Monzon is a Professor of Languages in the University of Paris. The boys think one tongue is enough for any woman, but after all, she is the teacher. james Mack became the proprietor of a large moving picture house in Los Angeles, in which he poses for his own pictures. Delores Feighner's voice can be heard amidst the buzzing of the stock tickers and noises of Wfall Street saying that she is now a woman capitalist. Fred Warner, who was always fond of chewing gum, has become a successful manager of one of the largest chewing gum factories in the world. Marikay Pain has devoted many years to the study of music. She is now touring the country giving concerts to large and appreciative audiences. Patricia Myers has become a noted stenographer. She is busy taking shorthand notes at the Supreme Court at Washington on week days, thus cashing in on her hard work during her school life. Rosemary Oldfield is happy as a traveling saleswoman, selling rouge, lipstick and other waterproof paints of the latest fashion. Miguel Guerrero was a renowned voice master for many years. He is now taking parts in Grand Operas at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Marjorie Haley has devoted her attention to the manufacture of cosmetics, and after becoming proficient in the French language, has opened a beauty parlor in Paris. Last but not least, you, Lenora, whose well-known literary talent has sent you to the top of the ladder of fame, have accepted a position as advertising writer for Hill's Department Store and acquire an enormous salary, since their financial success is entirely dependent on your talent. And now, you have learned of your classmates and are assured that each has met with success. The Bob-o-link ceases speaking.
