It is evident in all academic and extra-curricular activities. Academically, most students have set high goals and have equally high standards to achieve them. Our sports addicts, cheer- leaders, and other various group members have demon- strafed over and over that practice makes perfect. To some it all up, SPHS students don ' t quit they reach ultimate perfec- tion! I Be such a man. and live such a life, that if every man were such as you. and every life a life such as yours, this earth would be God ' s Paradise. -Phillip Brooks- « ' Jfl am comfortable around my friend. For reasons not always clear to me, she loves me. She has seen me blunder: she Is aware of my annoying self-in- dulgences, my private habits. All the things I once thought no one could know about me, she knows. In her presence I have very little to guard against, be- cause she distills me from my words. We have been together a long time, and now some grace within her can see me even when her eyes are open. Hugh Prather (Sophomore erecJoi k X y V 1 L ss . M ' i, ' -. f ' riif f _ ,. The enthusiasm of the students present was equal to that of the players. THE HALF TIME SHOW- The ASB did a wonderful job organizing the half-time show (The float was a much better choice than last years ' stubborn horsel). As usu- al, the court looked beautiful. Congratulations were bestowed on Michele Torres after being crowned by last year ' s queen, Rebecca Ruble. The night ' s festivi- ties concluded with an elaborate firework presenta- tion. THE DANCE- The 1986 Homecoming dance was more formal than previous years. Dinner was provided with the dance. It was held at the La Mirada Gateway Inn from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. All present had a delightful evening. 1986 HOMECOMING QUEEN MICHELE TORRES ],v f HOMECOMING PRINCESS LISA MA TA HOMECOMING PRINCESS ETHEL DELGADO HOMECOMING PRINCESS CHERYL KENNEDY HOMECOMING PRINCESS DENISE PAL AGIOS Dav Onc-Backwards Day On Monday, students got to stiow their wacky spirit by wearing their clothes inside out and bacl - wards Ttiey also got to demonstrate their back- wards intelligence by trying to make it through classes starting with seventh period and progressing through first. I would like to welcome you to our St. Paul family. We were all surprised, yet delighted with your addition to the St. Paul community. Your warmth and friendliness has been felt by everyone. Your eagerness and willingness in continuance of unity and tradition is shared by all. St. Paul is very lucky in acquiring such a note-worthy person as you. an individual who with the rest of the student body, voluntarily shares with us the meaning of the school year, tradition, and our future goals. The 1986-87 year represents something more than just an ordinary school year to the senior class. Though this marks the end of some memorable four years, it is time for you to begin anew era along with the classes to follow. But it is now under your leadership and guid- ance, that we ' ve all had or have the opportunity of enhancing our education both academically and spiritually You have also helped us to understand and serve the needs of others, recognize the impor- tance of co-curricular activities, and foster discipline, which are all important elements to our school philosophy More so. you have made this year a success with your willingness and active coopera- tion to not only help one group or class, but every individual student Here we see your dedication and contribution in making the St. Paul community as one family. Tradition is defined as the handing down of knowledge, beliefs, and customs from one generation to another. Tradition has always been greatly looked to over the past years. St. Paul values it ' s beliefs and principles. You have not only achieved in continuing our funda- mental traditions, but in refining and initiating others as well. Ylay you continue in upholding and upgrading the prestige given to St. Paul traditions. Anew school year will approach quickly. You will face new people, new ideas, and new challenges. We all thank you for sharing yourself with us in every possible way. And as I speak for the graduating class of 1987, we thank you for your contribution in completing four truly memorable years at St. Paul. We are all honored that you accepted the challenge of not only becoming our school principal, but our leader and friend as well. It was a great honor to work with such a unique individual as you. I leave you with many thanks and best of luck always. Sincerely yours, Alex Flares A SB President l. It gave them a chance to mingle and get to know their new family. The fun and excitement was a preview of all the dances to follow. The dances next in line seemed to be more important to the upperclassmen. The Christmas and Sadie Hawkins dances were very casual, while Homecoming, Girl ' s League and the Prom were the most in elegance. St. Paul dances gave all students a chance to loosen up and fake a break from the day to day grind.  ,,« . • • The craziness of the ' 86-87 rallies added to the spirit of St. Paul and Swordsmen pride. The St. Paul cheerleaders added a lot of pep to the rallies. They should be commended on their excellent job of organiz- ing rallies. Their cheers were a successful blend of traditional and new ideas. Mr. Asbra was very successful in inspiring the St. Paul family. , — T WHEN DID WE SEE YOU HUNGRY, LORD? ' MA TTHEW 25 The 14th annual St. Paul March For Hunger was held on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1966. Approximately 750 students, parents, and faculty met at 6:00 a.m. in the St. Paul Gym. Inside the gym one could feel the expecta- tions of the marchers. After the peaceful mass, the marchers boarded the 13 buses provided by the $2.00 entry fee At about 8:30 a.m., from Salazar Park, the march- ers started their journey of 26 miles, 7 feet, to Santa Monica Beach. The purpose of their long march was in support of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker Hospitality Kitchen. All proceeds from the students col- lections and pledges will go to help finance the expenses of the soup kitchen. The money will help pay for food costs which feed hundreds a day. Without this kitchen, many of the underpriviledged who live on skid row would go without any food at all. The sense of unity that one felt on the march was proven by the sight of everybody helping each other. The sight of people helping each other walk, or seeing someone push another in a shopping cart showed more-over the determination of all to make it the whole 26 miles. Back at St. Paul, all seemed to have a sense of accomplishment and pride which filled the campus throughout. Though many complained of aches and pains, all agreed that this ex- perience was worth more than any agony they went through. For this reason, which strongly shows the unity of the St. Paul family, we can all be proud to be attending St. Paul High School. -- i- ---■-. Blood Drive This year ' s Annual Blood Drive was held on October 29, 1986. followed by another in May. With the students ' enthu- siasm, the first Blood Drive was able to collect 64 units of blood, therefore making it the most successful one in the history of St. Paul ' s winter Blood Drives. Even though the Red Cross nurses and NHS members worked steadily throughout the day. the large amount of students created up to an hour wait. Yet not one student seemed to lose enthusiasm for this worthy cause. The atmosphere in the gym was one of determination, although murmurs could be heard like ' Does it hurt? Yet still the spirit of the cause reigned strong. Although some felt weak and some became dizzy all agreed on that despite the minor discomfort, it was well worth it if it could possibly mean helping another, which shows that in time of need that the tradition of unity within the St. Paul family still exist and is going strong. 116 1986-87 C(SF And MS Members The California Scliolarship Feder- ation is an organization designed to give recognition to ttiose students wtio actiieve and maintain academic ex- cellence in thieir course of studies. St. Paul boasts an average semester membership in this elite organization of approximately 90 students. Member- ship is granted on a per semester basis to those students earning an ' A ' grade in at least three substantially demand- ing academic courses v hile maintain- ing at least ' B ' quality in all other course work. It is likely that the Valedictorian and Salufatorian for the Class of ' 87 will be chosen from these members. Members of the National Honor Soci- ety are selected for their demonstra- tion of excellence in the four areas of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Members are nominated for earning a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and are then evaluated on the other three qualities before mem- bership is granted. NHS members are a valuable resource to the St. Paul com- munity and can be found assisting at many school events including Parent Teacher Conference Night, Eighth Grade Parents ' Night and the Eighth Grade Entrance Examinations. Many members are volunteers within their lo- cal parish or community. NHS mem- bers, as an example of their servicing spirit, in cooperation with the Rio Hondo Chap ter of the American Red Cross, also sponsor two Blood Drives which take place in October and May. Miss Dahnke is the moderator advi- sor for both of these organizations. C6r Denise Baker ' . Amy Belland ' . Luz Borjon ' . Oliver De la Paz ' , Niraj Desai ' . Manuel Diano ' . Joseph FInken ' . Yet after her victorious win over Marcos, her job is just getting started. After Marcos left the Philippines his loyalist group felt he would return someday And because of this they planned an attempted coup. but because of the military, their plans were soon dispersed. Also. Cory had to deal with constructing a new constitution for the government, in which she urged the people to give her all the support they could. There may be a lot of work ahead for Presi- dent Aquino, but her goal and concern for her country would definitely explain why she is the Woman of the Year. The financial aid to the Contras. which was approved by Congress, ap- peared to be causing problems with the l?eagan administration as a consequence of the Iran Arms sale scandal, which is the current issue being dealt with at this moment. This year marks the tragic and sudden incident at Chernobyl, where a reactor exploded therefore causing radiation to spread in most parts of Russia The U.S. was upset at the Russian government for not immediately informing them of the crisis, but Russia claimed the U.S. was in no danger from the radiation NATIONAL Current low Interest rates has been causing a flurry of activities at Wall Street The climb in the Dow Jones indicators has reached an all time mark of 2.250 points and has stayed at that level for two weeks. This is an indication that the U.S. Stock Mar- ket is very bullish There are a lot of uncertainties about the new tax laws and the IRS. has yet to come up with specific guidelines that maybe understandable by the tax payers. A few things seem to be certain about the new tax laws: it eliminated several tax shelters ex- pecially for real estate investors, it eliminates also the aeauction of Interests on consumer loans: it midified the basis for deductions of I.R.A. contribu- tions: these are just to name a few changes On the positive side, the new tax laws would only require three income tax brackets and lower tax rates as compared to the existing tax structures The buaget deficit has reached the trillion mark during the last Fiscal year Contributing substantially to this huge deficit was the large budget allocated for defense In order to reverse the trend of deficit spending Congress passed the Gramm-Redman law. Beginning with the current Fiscal year and ev- ery year thereafter, the deficit would have to be reduced by about 120 billion dollars a year The President of the United States. After many long years at St. Paul High, this year marked the sad departure of Father Carroll and Mrs Hemme Their hard work and dedication is what made St. Paul what it is today. Their positions are now in the capable hands of Father Gallagher and Ms Barrass who will continue the traaition of bring- ing St. Paul to new heights. The Aeromexico airliner crashed in the city of Cerritos and almost destroyed an entire neighborhood block, luckily it was a holiday where most people left their homes. In all, a total of more than eighty people were killed A major incident that had concerned many par- ents and students was the uproar that the teachers have conjured up this year Teachers demands for a salary increase were not met therefore causing many of them to be unhappy about their jobs. They registered their protest to the School Board and then upstaged a one day strike, and these included teachers from the LA. City schools, the Compton District, and the Ingle wood District. Los Angeles has been struck with the most atten- tion lately, as issues of building a prison and giving shelter to the homeless have affected the members of society Plans have been made to make another prison to accomodate prisoners from the over- crowded prison, but several people opposed the idea because they felt it was too close to the resi- dential area. Also the homeless people in the city have increased, so shelters such as Tent City were built in order to help the homeless. In the race for govenor of California. This year marks the historical flight of VOYAGER, the first plane to make a round-the-world flight without stopping and without refueling-which is also a first in atmospheric aviation. The mission came about through the faith of three principles: the two pilots. Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager: and Rutan ' s brother Burt, who designed the plane The plane ' s shell was made of a quarter-inch-thick panels of Hexcel honeycomb, a resin-coated, paper like polymer covered with graphite fibers embedded in epoxy The wings spanned 1 11 ft and are designed to flap some 30 ft The cabin was 2 ft. wide and ■.■ft long Once in the air. the VOYAGER averaged 110 miles per hour and continued to do so for 10 days. The project began in the Mojave Airport and was launched at Edwards Airforce Base, during the launch portions were taken off both wings but the damage was not crucial, so the mission continued. It sailed over the Pacific, over Africa, and into the South Atlantic They did experience rough weather from the southern Pacific to Central Africa, but they managed to maneuver around it. It took VOYAGER ten days to circle the globe but it was the fastest time in history, therefore making it one of the most captivating and memorable events of the year. They made their presence known In the football games by using their unified de- termination, not to let the spirit of ST. PAUL BAND die. This year ' s band, which for the eleventh year was led by the artistry of Mr. Ted Clark, also managed to put together fine performances at St. Paul ' s Annual Winter and Spring concerts. Although this year ' s band was much smaller than they had expected, they refused to let their size be a major hinderance. The remaining members were still full of spirit, which has held band together even through rough times weathered yet another year. The newest editions to band also helped to make this year ' s band successful. Even though small in numbers, this year ' s band was able to overcome a mountain of obstacles as well as the usual butterflies. In all, this year ' s 1986-87 school band showed the guts and determination which gave them the success which they well deserved and worked so hard for. This year ' s edition also gave hope to next year ' s band, that despite what numbers they might consist of. that if they work hard enough, then they can achieve any goal that they set out for. Which is what the tradition of St. Paul spirit is and always will be about. 140 Plays On |[ ■ - 1986-87 L Paul Speech Team A quiet, unassuming student walks tlie seemingly empty 500 tiallway. Suddenly, he tiears shrieks, laugh- ter, screams and cries from the end of the building. Peering in the door to room 508 he witnesses a strange scene. One student addresses a small group of empty desks, hypnoticly stating, I am a seagull. Another stu- dent screams to the window, It was the biggest dang thing I ' ve ever seen. A third student berates the wall demanding, want you to come home. Sure that he has stumbled onto St. Paul ' s hidden looney fringe, he quickly retreats. But, we are left to ask, Who is this seemingly strange group of individuals? They are the members of the St. Paul Forensic Association - a fancy way of saying the Speech Team. So, what is a Speech Team? This hearty group of individuals gathers an average of two out of four week- ends each month, well before sun-up to travel to excit- ing locations such as Alhambra, La Canada, Long Beach, and La Verne to match wits and voices with students from other schools in contests of public speak- ing. The St. Paul Speech Team is a member of the National Forensic League, the California High School Speech Association, and the Southern California De- bate League. In addition to competing in tournaments sponsored by these organizations, the team competes in invitationals and scholarship tournaments. Although the St. Paul Speech Team started the year with only one Varsity Speaker in a squad of 26 mem- bers, the team has done exceptionally well in both Novice and Varsity competitions. St. Paul ' s win elimina- tion breaking record averages about 90%. Highlights for the year included the team ' s 4th place award for Sweepstakes at the SCDL Fall Varsity Tournament (ac- complished by a Novice Squad), a novice Tournament at which 2 of the 3 trophies awarded went to St. Paul, St. Paul ' s hosting of not one but two tournaments, an increase in student memberships in the NFL by 20 de- grees, a branching into the Chapman College Shake- speare Festival and Student Congress, and St. Paul be- coming eligible to send students to the District Qualify- ing Tournament for the National Championship. 142 1.: SPEECH TEAM Renee Romero. They pos- sess a wide range of talents, monthly contributing cover stories, editorials, features, and sports articles. They call themselves the newspaper staff. The Two-Edged Sword was, for the third consecu- tive year, in the capable and expert hands of moderator Mr. tvtichael fvloore, who was continually inspired and motivated by veteran co-editors Margaret Ann Simonian and Margaret Elysia Wahab. These three, along with page editors Cathy Romero, Walter Rabies, and Melissa Rifino, cut and pasted articles frantically to make dead- lines each month. Room 409 became a haven for editors and staff writers alike, bearing witness to the periodical arrival and departure of mile -high stacks of newspapers, including the rather controversial October issue that nev- er saw the light of day. We spilled blood, proofed galleys, killed space, and fought constant battles with one another. Through it all, though, a spirit of comaraderie flourished, making our jobs more exciting and rewarding. For the second straight year St. Paul made the playoffs. If was no doubt the toughest preseason schedule in the Big Five Conference, and the Swordsmen were ready for the Cubs. But tragedy struck as a few costly turnovers gave Loyola easy touchdowns en route to a 42- 13 win. It was time to regroup against a very big Whitfier team. And like last year St. Paul won a laughter 28-7. After getting back on the winning track against Whitfier, the Swordsmen prepared themselves against the 2 team in the state. Carson. The game was close with St. Paul only trailing by four in the second quarter. Then all hell broke loose as a revengeful Carson Colts shut the door on the Swordsmen 18-33. The fourth game of the season was played on a rainy Thursday night against the Ocean View Seahawks. In the end it was a tough St. Paul defense holding down the Seahawks for a 17- 12 squeeker. St. Paul was now up against a undefeated St. John Bosco team. St. Paul began their come- back with little time remaining and nearly pulled out a miracu- lous victory. But in the end St. Paul fell short losing 17-21. St. Paul was 2-3 and were prepared for a tough Angelus League. They started league with a thrashing of Bishop Mont- gomery 33-7 on Homecoming night. The next game was against the fvlater Dei Monarchs. This game was very important towards a playoff berth. St. Paul brought back the Sword in this game, and stayed the Monarchs 27-6. The next game for the Swordsmen was a new team in the league. St. Bernard Vikings. It was plain to see the Vikings were out of their league as St. Paul dominated 49- 16. The next game was against our rival Servite. St. Paul made sure Servile didn ' t forget last year ' s game in handing the Friars a 35-21 loss. The final game was for the Angelus title, but in the end Bishop Amat came out ahead 34-6. The score did not show how hard St. Paul played. It was another exciting year for St. Paul Football as they took second place in the Angelus League! 166 (Swordsmen Varsity Football 1986 (Statistics PASSING ATT. 1 COMP. YARDS PCT. TD INT. The soccer team had its best record this year since its beginning in 1984. The team was lead by seniors: Howert Collins, Greg LaValle, Steve tvlini , Robert Sanchez, and Tom Ontl- veros. One of the major reasons for the team ' s suc- cess was its defense lead by sophomore goal keeper Danny Ramsey. This year the Varsity soccer was in the running for a playoff spot. The soccer team ended the season in 4th place in a very competitive Angelus League, dominated by tVlater Dei and Bishop Montgomery. The team hopes to improve their record next year with many returning players. 198 i ' - y- ■: . ' r- . ' 1987 J.V. (Soccer Team Back Row Coach Ben Alvarez. Alex Rosas. Chris Franco. Alex Rojas. Although 3 starters were returning (Costello, Willis. Pontages), the strength of the program each year-pitching, was our greatest con- cern. The group was talented but very young and inexperi- enced. Only senior southpaw Marc Aguirre had any varsity experience. Some of the other members of the St. Paul pitching included senior righthanders Darren Collette and Rolli Chavez, junior righties James Chavez, Victor Gonzalez, Vince Martinez. John Savedra, Keith Quiroz. and lefty Mike Kyckelhahn. Sophomore righties Steve Duda, Emmett Amezquita, and R.C Chavea. Despite the uncertainty in pitching, there were several bright spots in the season. The Swordsmen were very strong defensively. We were anchored at second base with Rene Licon. short stop with Jason Pantages, center fielder with Mando Costello. Offensively, we had a good balance of power and speed We relied on contact hitters like Cos- tello, Licon. Pantages. and Rollie Chavez to reach base. Then we turned to the big guys like Jeff Willis. Marty Tour- ville, and Aguirre to drive them home. This season was another exciting one. For those of you who followed Angelus League Baseball, you know Just what that means. 202 1987 J.V.
