ii' T15 January 31, 1982 'ffl' if YY if? 'fi 'il' 'fl' A Summary DOZIER IS COLUMBIA MAKES KIDNAPPED TWO PERFECT A Royal Wedding After years of anticipation by Britains, the world's most eligible bachelor was married. Prince Charles of Wales wed Lady Diana Spencer on July 29, 1981. What has been called the wedding of the century took place in St. Paulls Cathedral in Lon- don and was seen by millions of television viewers and by those who lined the streets. Three months later, it was announced that England's future queen was with child. U.S. VS. LIBYA ln August 1981, U.S. F-14s gunned down two Libyan jets after being fired upon. Before the year was over, 1.ibya's Col. Moammar Khadafy reported ly sent a hit squad after President Reagan and other officials. No assassinations ever took place. TROUBLE IN POLAND The fight for freedom continued throughout the world. The biggest crisis in this battle was the impo- sition of martial law in Poland in an attempt to squelch the growing freedom movement know as Solidarity. Early in 1981, the Polish people were given many privileges. The Solidarity movement flourished throughout the country, as leader Lech Walesa lead his people in their strugge for rights. Early in December, Lech Walesa was placed under house arrest near Warsaw, and the martial law was put into effect. As time went on, it was obvious that the Poles wouldn't give up and Walesa was picked Man of the Yearn by Time magazine. ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS On March 30, 1981, Ronald Reagan was the victim of a would-be assassin's bullet. John Hinkley, Jr., an admirer of actress Jodie Foster, hoped to gain her love with this historic deed. Unfortunately the insanity didn't stop there. Six weeks later, Pope John Paul ll was shot by Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turk- ish criminal, as he was holding a mass audience in St. Peter's Square. Then, in October, the President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, was assassinated along with seven others by anti-Westernization rebels. 24 Cl STUDENT LIFE AND RESCUED U.S. Brig. Gen. James Dozier was abducted from his Verona, Italy apartment of Dec 17,1981. Held by ltaly's Red Brigade Terrorists, he was finally rescued, unharmed, on Jan. 28, 1982, 42 days later. Reagan Picks First Woman U.S. Justice After decades of restriction to men, the United State Supreme Court opened up its doors to its first woman justice A Sandra Day O'Connor. Coming from Phoenix, where she served as an appellate judge, Sandra Day O'Connor seemed the ideal Rea- gan choice. Though protested by pro-life forces for her ideas on abortion, her appointment seemed to please everyone else, including her fellow male jus- tices. Cube Fever Claimed to be a game, a teaching aid, a sport and a piece of art by its inventor, Erno Rubik, the Rubik's Cube hit the market with a bang. lt's curious that a puzzle in which colored sides are matched up would be a success, but without a doubt, it was. BUDGET CUTS The Reagan Administration enacted several his- toric tax and budget cuts in its first year. Many people were affected by the cuts. Students were especially affected as financial aid requirements were made more strict. STRIKE In violation of federal law, U.S. air traffic control- lers walked off the job and went on strike. President Reagan quickly acted on his power and fired every- one involved. The workers were replaced with new- ly trained and military controllers. TRIPS A great feeling of pride swept across the United States as the world witnessed two successful launches and landings of the first reusable space- craft. The success of the space shuttle opened the door to future space travel in private and commer- cial areas. To quote Robert Crippe, co-pilot on the Columbia's maiden flight there i ain't no way you can describe it. Though the spacecraft was hin- dered by minor problems, NASA plans on many more successful missions. January Plane Crashes Kill Eighty People Two plane crashes in January 1982 proved quite disastrous as approximately 80 passengers and crew were killed. The first occurred when an Air Florida jet crashed into the Potomac River in Wash- ington, D.C. after becoming icy in inclement weath- er. The second occurred within two weeks when a World Airways jet hurtled across the runway into Boston Harbor. STONES ROCK THE COUNTRY The legendary rock group, The Rolling Stones, began a nationwide tour in July 1981. Locally, the Stones performed to crowded, but eager, fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Many St. Paul students anxiously attended. Walter Cronkite After 18 years of serving as anchorman for televi- sion news, Walter Cronkite retired from the CBS J.R. AND SUE ELLEN DIVORCE JOCK DIES NEWS.
