The newspaper staff was really making news this year, letting all students contribute their ideas. It was mainly published by Miss Kearney ' s journalism class, but oth- ers were encouraged to contribute. Miss Kearney, the new moderator, • along with Paul Fournier, editor, and asst. editors, Jim Sherman and Dean Sowa worked to produce monthly newspapers. Among the changes made this year, a new feature, Lines and Letters , was ad- ded in which students could write mes- sages to their friends. On the whole, the staff kept students up to date on what was heppening here at St. Paul. Supervising production. Mike researches controversial topics. Check It Out With This year the Library Guild worked hard to keep our library organized and working as efficiently as possible. Moderated by Mrs. Fleming, the fourteen members of the staff helped sort books, work at the librar- ian ' s desk and in general, did their best to be of service in any way they could. The mem- bers dedicated thirty minutes everyday to help out in the library. It wasn ' t all work though, as they were able to take time out to have their annual Christmas party and the Faculty Tea in February. Also, they planned to take a field trip this Spring and at the end of the year, they had their annual party for the senior members. The Library Guild did a great job in keeping our library working most effectively for the benefit of the students. The Spanish Club this year, headed by Sr. Therese Ma- rie, was made up of people getting involved in Spanish backgrounds. They accomplished their main goal, having the mural of Guadalupe completed, so that all the Hispan- ic-Americans and others could appreciate the beauty of the Mexican faith. In celebration of the completed work, Bish- op Moreno came to the school and a special mass was held. The fund-raisers for this goal were: Sponsering the De- cember dance. The group ' s purpose was to do Christian Service within and outside school. Together the members helped co-ordinate the campus masses held on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and various other special occa- sions. They also worked as organizers and homeroom repre- sentatives during the successful Thanksgiving food drive, where over 40 boxes of food and $600 were collected for the local organizations serving the poor. Its main purpose was to do services within the community. Their goal was to make students aware of what was going on in the world outside of their own personal lives and help solve some of the problems found. They worked with the poor and elderly, supported the East L.A. Salesian Boy ' s Club, the Hospitality Kitchen, and sponsored the 26 mile March for Hunger. Outreach, an open club, had almost 100 members. We are proud of these students and their Christian work. m 16V.C Attentive listeners?! Mr. Jiru, Leader of the Pack! ' 22 YOUTH OUTREACH t ! Soon after the auditions held in October, these selected musicians and singers displayed their gifted talents at different kinds of events throughout the year. Performances were held at detention camps, church functions, the S.P. Christmas concert, a student council conference, and the cam- pus masses. Time out was taken in January for a relaxing retreat up in the mountains. This group, headed by a fantastic music major, Hanan Yaqub, developed a close relationship. Although hard work was the main action, this group had a fun time. Tarsus brings holiday cheer at the Christmas concert. Bol. L-R: Eric Rosas. Byron Schatz, Greg Gallegos. Gerry Home, Li? Hamilton. TARSUS 23 Secretaries Ready For Business For anyone interested in a career in business, the Secretary ' s Club was the club to join. Its main pur- pose was to help its members fur- ther their knowledge of the secre- tarial field. It consisted of 60 members all of whom were juniors and seniors in business classes. They participated in such activi- ties as field trips to major busin- esses and listening to guest speak- ers at meetings. They sponsored bake sales, grams, raffles, and a most successful, Father-Daughter Night. Proceeds went towards buying equipment for the business department. Moderated by Miss Oswald and Mrs. Armstrong, the Secretary Club was very popular and enriching. Altentative listeners. Le Cercle Francais, or better known as the French Club, is one of our newer clubs this year. Meeting bi-monthly, 13 active members come together to learn more about the French language and culture by play- ing games, listening to records, and taking field trips to educational places. The club sold refreshments at dances to raise money for a dinner at a French restau- rant and a service project for the school. Hopefully this club will spawn a new generation of appreciators of the French culture. Selling refreshments at dance as fund-raiser. 2 6 FRENCH CLUB The sport of flyswatting! Raquetball Club St. Paul was really getting into the fascinating sport of ra- quetball this year as one of our newest clubs was established. The raquetball club was open to anyone and had a member- ship of 1 7. The members would go every Saturday to work out and get some exercise with a lot of fun by playing games at the La Mirada Raquetball Club. Another good side of their club was the tournament they planned to have. Over all, this club was one of the most active and fun clubs here at St. Paul. Walch the wall! Top: Doug Perry. Without a doubt, the ski club was definitely one of the most popular clubs ever to swoosh by St. Paul High. With the help of special student skiing agencies, the members were able to ski to their hearts content at fairly rea- sonable prices, at such tantalizing slopes as Mammoth, Squaw Val- ley, Heavenly Valley, North Star, and many other places. Trips gave members a chance to get away from the hassles of everyday life, as well as taking in a few breathtaking sights, wheth- er it be a beautiful snow capped mountain against a crystal clear blue sky, or a fellow skier of the opposite gender. But either way you look at it, this club has given students opportunities to ski and to meet new people. Hopefully this year ' s success will continue for all future skiers at St. Paul. Lumen was both a class and an after- school activity. The class which was held 2nd period, consisted of 9 seniors and 1 sophomore who produced the contents of the book. Of course, the afterschool gang played a big part in this production. This club provided experiences that were un- natural to human abilities, such as: work- ing in the wee hours to meet a deadline, racking brains for unique ideas, organizing photo sessions where no one showed up for the pictures, struggling with malfunction- ing typewriter and un cooperative fingers, having completed layouts refused, mis- placing important pictures, and basically, living through it all. Well, now you know why sanitariums are necessary! Believe it or not, we, the Lumen-atics, headed by Lucy Sacco, had a fun (?) time. Great friendships were developed between all which made accomplishing our heavy tasks easier. This year proved to be one of craziness, destruction, nausea, and studiousness, all of which the Lumen captured. This had to be one of the most exciting clubs on cam- pus — regardless of some of the insane jobs. A bit of advice to future Lumen-atics — GOOD LUCK!!! Not only did the ASB provide an excellent Spirit Week and Homecoming, but they began new projects such as the student forum and the Champions assembly. This year they have also received active participa- tion from members of various clubs in our school. The student participation this year, was the highest it ' s ever been at St. Paul ' s. The year began with an excellent performance of the Matchmak- er, at Rio Hondo ' s Wray Theater. It was described by many people as very profes- sional and the best high school show they ' d seen . They rounded out the year by performing Free To Be ... You and Me as a fundraiser, and the much await- ed musical Once Upon A Mattress . Judging by the quality of the perfor- mances, drama became truly successful this year. The quiet water in the lake rippled gently in the breeze. Here and there couples played tennis or frisbee and joggers were scattered over the green hills. But, suddenly, loud and strange noises were heard from under a giant tree which was completely hidden by toilet paper. Further investigation led to the discovery of hundreds of girls spreading havoc and confusion and all in all creating bedlam throughout the park. No, they were not Beaman escapees, but rather S.P. seniors showing the new freshman girls how to have fun . The annual Big Sis-Lil ' Sis Picnic was an obvious success thanks to the hardworking ASB officers, especially the Sr. class officers who planned and sponsored the entire event. All the girls, seniors and freshmen alike, will probably always remember that wild and crazy day . 40 BIG SIS-LIL ' SIS PICNIC 41 S.P. Activities 42 ACTIVITIES Hard Work Pays Off For The J.V. They also took first place in the Arroyo Competition, and along with cheering at the Sophomore games, added a great deal of pep to the rallies. Boltom-JoAnn Schmit?. Cynthia Martin. Countless practices proved worthy as they placed 1st in Arroyo Competition. Dedication and attitude were some of the key factors in their success, and they did much more than many people ever realize. Maureen, I ' ve learned alot about myself and gained confidence. Ruth, I ' ve gotten to know many people whom have lasted as great friends. Good Vibrations Comin ' Atcha This year the St. Paul Band, directed by Mr. Claric, expanded in size considerably. The Cadet band consisted of forty-two students, most of whom had never played in a band before. They made plans to put on a concert for the public. The intermediate band, which consisted of seven students, already had some experience with their instru- ments. In the varsity band there were over seventy students. They performed at all home football games and playoff games and added pep to the rallies. After football season they became a concert band, playing in the Annual Spring Concert among others. The band played a variety of music such as rock, jazz, and classical. Since it still is a young band, there will be plenty of returning talent as well as new talent in the years to come. Because you cared about this school, because you were concerned for its ' well-being, we have grown as a family while each of you have grown to young adulthood. You have given generously of your time and talents to enhance the image of your school, to improve its many programs and to create an atmosphere in which we could all work together in a spirit of harmony and mutual support. We are most grateful to you. For the respect and friendship which you have shown to me personally, I add a very special note of thanks. And now you will soon be leaving us. As you take this step, my feelings are ambivalent. I regret to see you leave, yet I am excited at the limitless potential for further growth which exists in the worlds of higher education, of work, of family, to which you go. As you make this transition, I ask you to remember your roots and cherish them. Your home, your parents, your family, your church, your school have all contributed to making you what you are. They are the sources of deep strength. You would be well advised to continue to draw from these sources. For the future, I say to you, be happy! But note that true happiness does not come from the possession of things or people. It consists in being free of slavish servitude to things and in being capable of giving ourselves to others-to loving without counting the cost and being loved in return. Be hopeful! Never let failure drag you down to cynicism and despair. Keep your dreams alive. You have a Father in heaven who loves you, cares for you, and will help you achieve all that is truly good. Be at peace! The peace I wish you is that which comes from a good conscience - from the ability to say to yourself that in all life ' s decisions, you have tried to do what is honest, decent and true. No other peace is possible or worth having. May God bless you and keep you always. Father Aidan M. Proverbs 24:3-4 Brother Marius asks for the teacher ' s advice. With the new school year, 350 students joined St. Paul ' s community. Like the rest of us, they came here with various hopes and dreams and differing expectations. Our Faculty has kept St. Paul ' s moving in a direction that combined our traditions and spirit with the opportunity to learn and grow in such a way that we could make our dreams come to realization. They encouraged us to get involved and then supported us by becoming involved themselves, whether it was devising a new method of learning, moderating a club or activity, or coaching a sport. St. Paul Swordsmen Capture 1978 Angelus League Crown The 1978 Season is one that will never be forgotten in the annals of Swordsmen history at St. Paul. Instead of remem- bering the team only because it came up short of going to the CIF finals at the Big A, let ' s review the high points and keep the successes fresh in our minds. The ' 78 Swordsmen began the year with many positions left wide open. Having lost their fine team speed of the previous years didn ' t help the squad and many Juniors were called upon to fill the graduated voids. In addition to the lack of experience, the Swordsmen roster slipped below sixty for the first time in twelve seasons. The effect was a great deal of adjustments made by Coach Ancich and his staff, which featured four new coaches on the varsity level. Due to the school ' s winning tradition in football, newspaper pollsters still picked the Swordsmen to battle an exper- ienced and letterman ladened Mater Dei squad for the League Crown. The season started with a bang as the Swordsmen stunned long time rival El Rancho 32 to 8 and served notice that they were ready to bump heads with anyone. The passing attack was at its best and gave the Swordsmen offense a new spark as some of the newcomers came through. Test number two in the pre-season was Desert Power Palmdale and the fast improving Swordsmen ran away from the Falcons by a score of 37 to 0. Moore league champ Long Beach Poly was next and the Swordsmen responded with a narrow 7 to triumph over the very physical and speedy Jackrabbits. The Big Blue fumbled away a few scoring chances and were fortunate to hold off an upset minded Poly eleven. The Swordsmen ' s finest hour in the pre-season came against a heavily favored and phys- ically huge Loyola team. When the dust cleared, the Swordsmen had pulled off a major upset by outplaying and I 11 ' 4tE3ir|4lCTb7 Top Rou; Dave Ccrvanlcs. Doug King, Da c Src.wMch, I ' liil I ' nncipi.-. This gave the Swordsmen an unbeaten record of 4 and and prepared them for the vigors of the Angelus League season. Angelus League play saw the Swordsmen open against league newcomer Bishop Montgomery from Torrance. The Knights were outclassed and fell to the Big Blue by a score of 35 to 16. Next up was a trip to Orange County and a crucial game with league favorite Mater Dei. Although outweighed almost 30 pounds a man the Swordsmens sur- vival instinct surfaced and they somehow managed to find a way to win with a key fumble recovery and a 7 to 3 triumph. The result of the victory saw the Swordsmen move to the 1 spot in all the Southland Top Ten polls. Next up was a game against quick Pius X team which was celebrating their Homecoming and 25th Anniversary. The Swordsmen were not very sharp in this one and were lucky to slip by the Warriors by a score of 10 to 0. Homecoming was next and the big game with long time rival Servite of Anaheim. A full house of over 10,000 witnessed the best game of the year and a very decisive 23 to 7 victory for the high flying Swordsmen. The final step to an unbeaten season meant a trip to La Puente and a rugged test against arch rival Bishop Amat. The game was a toe to toe war in which the Swordsmen surged to a strong 21 to victory and the Angelus League Crown. The battle yell was On to the CIF. The Swordsmen ' s opponent in the first round was Sunset Power Newport Harbor. In this game, the Swordsmen had a lot riding: a nine game win streak; the number 1 CIF ranking; an un- beaten season, and a possible trip to the Big A. The Swordsmen slipped on the muddy Cranham Memo- rial turf and fell to the Sailors from Newport 10 to 7. Football has been described as Life in a microcosm. It has its victories and defeats, its rewards and punishments, its memorable moments, and times we would rather forget. But if we look at the 1978 Football Season as the year that the CIF Championship slipped from the palms of our hands, then we are looking at life with a defeatist attitude. The year 1978 in the annals of Swordsmen football history was one of the greatest experiences of our lives. It was a victory, it had rewards and it was memorable. Mid-way through the season the team experienced a mental let-down , and compensated by concentrating more on team orientated play, rather than just individual play on the court. Their overall record of 6-15 is not a true indicator of the caliber of play that the team displayed. The starting five for many of the games this season were underclassmen. This provided them with an excellent op- portunity to gain valuable experience for the upcoming seasons. Close and exciting games, including overtime losses to Pius X and Servite, seemed to be the general rule of the season. The Swordsmen lost six games by a combined total of ten points, two of which were two point losses to Neff and Bosco Tech. The team experienced many firsts this year, particularly Basketball on Parade where Nancy Viele was crowned Queen, and the transference of home games to Whittier College.
