DEDICATION All of our faculty members have worked hard to achieve the best for our school and our students, many with little recognition. It is at this time that we, the 1979 ESTONOA staff, with our highest respect and sincerity, dedicate this edition of the ESTONOA to you. MR. ROBERT ROBBINS Throughout your many years of teaching, you have brought before us many educational challenges which have encouraged your students to do their very best. Your humor helped to ease our journey through high school and you have been a great inspiration to us. Thank you, Mr. Robbins. J. FRED MATTHEWS MEMORIAL LIBRARY CT PAUL. It all began in the fall of 1967. Those were the good old days. We did not realize at that time, however, that we were in the making of the most outstanding group to ever graduate from St. Paul High School, otherwise known as the class of '79. In 1967, our class, with bright, expectant faces, presented itself to the first grades of various schools to begin our education. Gail Burton, Jackie Domby, Jeff Goodson, Vickie Johnson, Jean Kennedy, Neal Kilgore, Wendy Kiser, Charlie Lewis, Debbie McReynolds, Mike Mullins, Scott Sneed, Rita Summers, Janice Wright, Aaron Porter, Allen Porter, Randy Wright began at St. Paul Elementary. Jeff Austin, Glenn Bays, Patsy Blevins, David Hileman, Jane Kirk, Tim Meade, Dwayne Musick, Rebecca Powers, Patsy Ramsey, Faith Salyers started at Dwina Elementary. As time passed, in the fifth grade, the St. Paul and Dwina students joined forces and became a united group of outstanding students. Karen Willis entered our class from Roanoke, Virginia also in the fifth grade. Danny Clay came from Castlewood in the sixth grade. As we became older, grew up and reached the higher grades, the work became harder, the teachers rougher, and we had a lot more studying to do. The seventh grade, along with many challenges, brought many things to look forward to — such as the prom. Two new faces entered our class, also. They were Marlene Bise from Kentucky and Randy Hall from Ohio. Jeff Goodson, who left us after the first grade joined us once again when he became discouraged with Castlewood. Suddenly our lives changed. In September, 1974 we were in high school. As we stepped into a higher field of education, a new and frightening experience had begun. It was scary going into the eighth grade. Our elementary teachers had warned us about the slave- driving teachers in high school. Now we know. Many will remember when our Math 8 class, which was taught by Mrs. Kelly, was threatened to be taken before the school board for disciplinary action. Soon the terror of being in the 8th grade was over. The very thought of being a ‘‘freshman”’ in high school gave us a thrill — one we will remember as long as we live. Janet Gordon served as President and Janice Wright served as vice-president. Our Sophomore year was even more thrilling. We were gradually getting closer to our goal. Aaron Porter served as class CLASS HISTORY president and Rebecca Powers served as vice-president. We lost two of our dearest classmates this year when Aaron and Allen Porter moved to Abingdon. Our Junior year introduced us to things which were more realistic. We began to realize that our high school days were coming to a close. Aaron and Allen Porter returned once again to our class this year. Kim Townes from Bristol, Virginia also joined us during this year. In our eventful eleventh grade, we received our class rings — those precious little pieces of metal with our initials carved inside them, for which we had labored eleven long years. During this year the Junior-Senior Prom came with us as hosts. We'll always treasure the memories of this event. Jackie Domby served us as president and Jeff Austin served as vice- president. Many of the athletes in our class will remember that the Girls Track team placed first in the District Track Meet during this year. Our goal is now reached — we are Seniors!! It took twelve long years of hard work and determination to get here and we all feel a special pride in ourselves. We wish to express our thanks to our teachers and to our principal, Mr. Ward, for their helpfulness, continued support and Interest: During this year we were joined by Dale Reedy from Ohio and Tim Couch from West Virginia and our class has grown to have 33 graduates. Many important events have occurred during this, our last year. Our varsity football team broke a 32 game losing Streak with a sweet victory over the Hurley Rebels. Our basketball team has also had a good year with a final record of 9-11. We also feel that being the first class to go the whole five years in the new high school building is important. We would like for our class to be remembered as a Class who insists on having a good time no matter what anyone says. We are a group of fun loving, crazy people who are close and who like to add a little humor to a school day. Our class may not be the most respected, but we are sure to have a good time no matter where we are. Although the curtain is about to fall, and although we boast no claims of unusual integrity, we hope that in your memories you hold a special place for the class of 1979. Although many of her students gave her a rough time, she was loved and respected by many. With her cheerful smile and warm sense of humor, she brightened our days. We appreciate her efforts and are grateful for all she has done for us. We wish her success in her new position and we hope that she will always have a place for us in her memories. 17 LT yi FACU waeneneet 5 ° + 2 2 BULLETIN OUR PRINCIPAL MR. JAMES A. WARD Seniors, By the time you read this many things will have taken place since your graduation. Your classmates will be scattered through the nation, some married, some in the military services, many in college, many departed for work, and some perhaps dead. Take a moment to reflect upon the days of your youth and consider where you may have done better. Consider the advice you may wish to pass on to those who have taken your place as Seniors. Ponder the legacy you have left for them, good or bad, and the kind of legacy you would like to have left for your own children. Do not forget your school days, teachers, activities, and school life as they are treasured times you will long for once you have undertaken the rigors of adult life. You no longer can pass your errant ways off as the irresponsibility of youth and hide behind your youthful innocence. You must now pay your dues to the adult world and shoulder the responsibility of your own actions. Gratefully accept this challenge and yours will be a more fruitful and content future. The friendly faces and warm smiles of these Administrative Assistants help to bring sunshine to a dull school day. We appreciate them and all they do. Miss Sandra Mullins, Asst.
