So many of our teachers have endeavored to achieve the very best for our school and its students . The St. Paul High School Annual Staff would like to dedicate this edition of ESTONOA to Mrs. Truth S. Fraley. During her two years at St . Paul High School she has provided guidance and friendship to the students . Her untiring desire to help the students is evidenced in both her classroom and guidance office. We extend our appreciation, gratitude, and love to Mrs. Fraley with this dedication. Mrs. Truth S. Fraley 25 H 16 James A. Ward Failures are divided into two classes - those who thought and never did , and those who did and never thought. Success, on the other hand, is measured in terms of personal gratification, and the rewards of success are slow in coming. This is best said in the last stanzas of two poems - John B. McClendon ' s Ode to the Vanquished, ” Total the sum of life ' s great test Find honor is given for only your best . Regardless of finish, your place in the sun Is decided by the race you ' ve run. From birth, as from the starters blast Not whether you win but whether you last. Nor whether you’re beaten by others my friend, But whether you ' ve run your race to the end . or Grantland Rice ' s poem on life, ' ' Keep coming back, and though the world may romp across your spine, Let every games end find you still upon the battling line. For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name He writes . . . not that you won or lost . . . but how you played the game. ” There are many sayings which apply to life, Keep your nose to the grindstone, keep a stiff upper lip, think positive,” the road to oblivion is paved with good intentions, get your ducks in a row, take the bull by the horns, and they are all good , but only if you follow the principles they propose. If not , they are sayings and nothing more . Accept your station in life, whatever it may be, and work to make it better. Turn your handicaps into strengths and your bad luck into meaningful and educational experiences . Accentuate the positive by focusing on what is good and learning from it . Your life will be either a success or failure depending upon what you, yourself, make of it. You may fail many times, but you still will not be a failure until you blame someone else. Work hard, keep a clear mind and a clean conscience , and success will be your reward . If not , you have my blessings . 17 o 3 ' ' o 3c:o OFFICE PERSONNEL The friendly faces and warm smiles of these office workers greet each student as the school day begins. Even though Mrs. Lucas has a variety of pressing duties, she always has a smile and provides a helping hand. Mrs. Lawson, ever friendly and cheerful, helps keep track of all absentees and announces all school news. Mrs. Fraley listens to our problems, schedules our classes, and keeps everyone in a good mood. We come, each for a different purpose and for a different goal. We come to attempt, to hope , to succeed . We come to St. Paul High School as eighth graders and day by day ascend the ladder to graduation. On each step we find different eulogies, different condemnations. As we take each step we receive, we give, we learn, we teach. We know that these tender years are simply a stairway to some mystical future. We go upward with only a hope , only an idea of what is on the next step or to where the steps lead. We know only that we must be here. We know only that a quiet voice says you must be here if you are to fully exist as an individual. And, as an individual, the stairway leads to as many places, goals, and values as there are people ascending. For each it leads to something different. Only we as individuals can tell its destination, but for the Class of 1977, it has been a stairway to . . . a progressing present , an embedded past, and a hopeful future . 79 ADVERTISING ADVERTISING 80 Compliments to the 1977 St. Paul Graduates HUFF — COOK FUNERAL HOME Manager: Wendell Burroughs Phone: 762-9592 St. Paul, Virginia SALYER ' S Compliments of CLOTHING BLUE-GRASS DRIVE-IN lateAt ,n|j£ I n HI 203 W.
