The year 1939 was very important to us, the members of the Class of ’51, for it was then that we, with bright eyes and quiver- ing hearts, experienced our first day in school. We entered the doors of various elementary schools, but our experience was much the same. Emmy Gray, Ruth, Betty Lou, and “Chunk” entered the first grade at the St. Paul School. Marie enrolled at Dante, Virginia, while Shirley and J. T. Glovier began at Benham, Kentucky. Evelyn and Hubert started school at Virginia C ity and Earry en- tered at Cleveland, Virginia. Rex was a first-grader at William- son, West Virginia, while Dwina claimed Dave and Edwin. Helen Eewis entered school at Hamlin, Virginia, and Peggy was a first- grader at Honey Branch. Polly Ann started her first year in Coe- burn and Howard began in Clincho. As the years passed, Rex Talbert joined our class in the fourth grade and went to the seventh with us. Then he moved to Roanoke, but returned to us again in the tenth grade. Marie Addington enrolled in our class in the fifth grade, and later in the sixth grade Howard Bradley and Larry McReynolds joined us. In the seventh grade Polly Ann Jordan, and in the eighth grade Hubert Talbert, Edwin Stallard, Dave Brooks, Peggy Holbrook, and Evelyn Hamilton entered our class. Our freshman year was spent in adjusting to high school life, and in thinking of how we could spend to best advantage our school days. During our sophomore year we had lots of pranks, jokes, and fun with each other. In our junior year we published the school paper, and even though we were very busy, the days seemed cheerful and happy as they went by. We gave a Junior Play, “The Tin Hero.” Later in the year, we took the seniors to Hungry Mother’s Park and had an enjoyable and exciting day. We were very happy to have Shirley Glovier and Helen Lewis join us at the beginning of our senior year. Shirley took summer school in order to finish with our class, and Helen came to us from Erwin, Tennessee. There were only eighteen of the sixty-six members of our eighth grade class who were with us when we answered the call of the old school bell at the beginning of our senior year. Perhaps our classmates thought they had sufficient reason for dropping out of school from time to time, but somehow we felt that many of them were wishing that they had remained with us. Even in our senior year Howard Bradley enlisted in the Air Force, Emogene and Ruth joined the ranks of matrimony, and J. T. Glovier found the life of a student too unin- teresting to remain in school. Now we have only fourteen who expect to receive the re- ward of a high school diploma in June. Not only have we suffered the loss of many of our classmates, but during our senior year Mr. W. C. Craft, who had been our home room teacher since the eighth grade, was called back into Service. He is now serving with Uncle Sam in Korea. He was liked by everyone, and we miss him very much. We hope he will return to our school as soon as possible. We, the Seniors of 1951, would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to our parents who have worked with us and have put us through school. Also, we want to thank our teachers who have been interested in us, and have led us along the path that makes it possible for us to be seniors today. (yeniol (31 ass Prophecy Now it came to pass in the year of 1951 as I, Emmy Gray Sparks, sat with my classmates in English IV Class, daydreaming a little as usual, a strange feeling came over me; so strange that I sat up and rubbed my eyes. As I looked up, be- hold, a whirlwind came out of space, a great cloud and a light enfolded itself about me, leaving me in a trance. The future was opened unto me, and I saw visions of what was to be twenty years hence. I find myself seated in a ritzy New York apartment, reading the New York Times, when I see a name that brings back old memories. It says here, “The Flame of New York, Mrs. Marie Addington Sproles was seen dining with her husband in the tea room at the Astoria Monday evening. I wonder what happen- ed to the rest of my classmates. I think I’ll call up “Chunk Richmond, who now operates a theatrical agency in Yorkers called, “The House of Trouble,” star- ring Peggy Holbrook, “As That Gal with the Bubble,” and see if he can help me locate any of them. He tells me as usual very eager to go, That we’ll have to hunt maybe an hour or so. We stopped by for gas, and were amazed to find, Dave Brooks, the proprietor, a friend of mine. After the car was gassed and serviced with care. Behold! Edwin Stallard was grease monkey there. Strange as it seems , w ithout much ado, He tells us another name or two. “Rex Talbert,” he says, thinking back, “Make money galore from track to track. And Hubert Talbert, another old chum, Is nothing but a bowery bum.” We pulled out suddenly and crossed the street. In the hope of another old friend to meet. “Chunk called my attention to an interesting tottle, Why, that’s Helen Lewis, the New York Model. “Confidentially,” she said, with a sneakish look, “Polly Ann Jordan has a millionaire on the hook. We traveled on, and my heart did whirl, When I saw Betty Lou Roller, a popcorn girl. Betty talked very rapidly and didn ' t stop, “Shirley Glovier is an artist who hit the top. If you’ll wander on down and take a look, You’ll find at the Waldorf, Howard Bradley is cook.” Howard showed us a program of a circus in town, Featuring J. T. Glovier, “The World’s Best Clown. And Evelyn Hamilton, that cute little trick. Is now a teacher that can handle a stick. Now Larry McReynolds is still a basketball star, He and Olympians have gone very far. Ruth Milton and family we mustn’t forget, Have plenty of money and really are set. There is one last fact that I must state, It was brought on me by terrible fate. So steady yourself and take care not to fall, For I own New York, Empire State and all! When Coaches Jack “Deacon Vest and Eskel Bryant issued the first play ball call in Mid August, it looked as though the Deacons would occupy a lower berth in the final standing in District VIII, however, those Lonesome 15 had other ideas and they soon became The Demons. It was a sight to behold that smooth-functioning outfit operate from the split T as in- stalled by Coaches Vest and Bryant. The Deacons proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that old adage, A team that won ' t be beaten can ' t be beaten , for their spirit and determination was without parallel in the eyes and minds of all District VIII football fans. Pound was first to feel the impact of these Demon Deacons to the tune of 25-0, then on successive weeks St„ Charles 33-13, Norton 20-14, Pennington Gap 46-7, Clintwood 19- 6, Gate City 27-26, Coeburn (The District and Division Champs) did beat them 25-20 after a terrific battle. (Coeburn lost to Clintwood 33-0, a team that St. Paul beat 19-6). The Deacons started again by scalping the Indians of Wise 33-19, tying Appalachia 7-7, and closed out the most outstanding season any football team of St. Paul ever had by turn- ing back Big Stone Gap 25-6. Yes, the Lonesome 15 in winning 8, tying 1, and losing 1 made football history at St. Paul. Captains Chunk Richmond and Dale Gray, and Big Bill Allen wrote their names with the all-time greats of Wise County, and will long be remembered by the Coaches and the team. We say, Congratulations and well done.
