I I I Never before in the history of man have social, economic, and religious problems been so complex and exacting as in our day and age. As time goes by it is becoming increasingly evident that the solution to these distressing and perplexing issues must come from another source than that of man him- self. In the Wake of the most devastating War of all time there follows a train of physical and spiritual wreckage that shall leave its blight and curse upon generations to come. The cure for these individual, national, or international ills cannot be found in World courts nor in peace treaties, but rather in the bringing of men TOGETHER WITH HIM. Behind us' lies a concentrated and accelerated period of training under able and godly instructors: before us lies a life of glorious service or ignominious failure. In ourselves we shall failp TOGETHER WITH HIM we must succeed. As We pause for a moment to look back and recall the many blessings we have received during our period of training at the Saint Paul Bible Institute, we, like Of Old, Want to raise our Ebenezer and with him say, I-Iitherto hath the Lord ,helped usf. A multitude of faces in Europe daily reflect the misery, espair and hopelessness which fills the hearts of their wners---faces deeply lined by poverty and hunger, old eyond their years, wearing the veils of superstition and ar. Today you can see millions of faces like these in Europe, America, in Mexico, all over the globe, millions who ave never seen a copy of the Word of God. The building in which the meeting was held was very fragile and the walls shook from the reverberation ol the bombs. But they prayed, they prayed for themselves, their suffering people, their soldiers on the battlefield, clos- ing their prayer in intercession for the Iapanese people. Love for their enemies. Yes, never has Christian love and grace been put to a more severe test. Through the sweeping away of material necessities the Chinese have come to see the things that remain are those that really count. China's doors are wide open to missionary activity now that it is no longer a theater of military oper- Htifhu ations. Only two missionaries now remain in French lndo-China, and conditions make it impossible for others on furlough to return immediately. But the challenge is greater than ever before. The people are awakened nationally, and stand at the crossroads. They are seeking, advancing, leave ing old traditions behind, and reaching out towards the new. lt is a prepared country: there are roads, buses, trains, boats, planes, and at the end of the roads are the millions of people---Annamese, Cambodians, Laotians, scores of tribes as yet untouched by the gospel. There We find throngs of peace seekers bath- ing in the dirty waters, believing this ritual will wash away sin and gain favor with the gods. They pour this dirty, sacred water over their heads from a brass pot carried for this purpose. Yes, they drink this water. They purify their souls here and some immediately after wash their hair and brush their teeth in the same waters, then continue their worship of idols at one of the roadside shrines- India is one of the most difficult missionary fields on the globe, there the missionaries wrestle against the strongholds of deep-rooted superstitious religions, the fiery darts of the wicked one on every hand. ---Biblical Missions, Feb.. 1946 ui - ?l 4- 1? a .. Strange stories have come out ot war, but there are prob- ably few more surprising than that of a group of soldiers, stationed on foreign soil setting up a Bible institute and seminary for the nationals of the area in which they were located. Yet that is exactly what is happening in Manila today. But this is only the beginning of the strides that Christian Gl'S are making for unprecedented missionary activity in bringing the gospel to the islands. Missionaries in this field have endured hardships during the war years, and not a few laid down their lives in sac- rificial service. New recruits rnust be ready soon to carry on the work which has begun there and to press the spiritual battle in the island world to its ultimate conclusion. ---Sunday.
