T so happened that Pat and I had to make a Sodahty poster But as usual we took it over to the school l1brary and sol1c1ted the help of J 1nny the school wonder Of course she was more than eager to do the work for us Pat and I remamed to super use the Job or rather to get in the way SIHCB our task took us until after library hours the keys were lntrusted to me We worked until a quarter of six put away our palnts and brushes and locked the library door We ascended the creakv stalrs that led to the Flfth Avenue door Locked It would be funny lf we were locked ln sald Pat Then ue tried the girls door locked This IS gettlng funny plped Mary Next we trled the boys door Locked Then it was my turn to speak I dont know whether or not this is funny but we me locked 1n Things began to happen We took the keys and tr1ed to unlock the doors We tried each key 1n each door but our efforts were use door A sure way out she lIlSlSted Ill try lt After patlently trying to insert each key she gave up Good heat ens it s locked too What ll we do Th1S was interrupted by an echo of laughter The s1tuat1on really was adventurous We gave up hopes of getting home that evening We seated ourselves on the steps for all the schoohooms were locked Between the intervals of qulet we dlsturbed ourselves now and then with our own laughter When we talked we all talked at the same tlme Then Jlnny concelved the ldea that per haps our mothers were worrled Oh gosh yes and well f01 the love of Pete we can go up to the office and call our mothers and the parlsh house too for that matter Gee of all the dumb so and sos we re the dumbest sald Mary At last we could go home we thought We all accompamed Mary to the office to do the necessary calllng On Being Locked In Helen Patrle 38 The office door was locked Oh me' Then J 1nny caught slght of the fire alarm QAt least I thmk that s what It was! She pulled the rope whlch forced the alarm to rlng She pulled It untll she almost set us crazy Ev1dently th1S dldnt affect anyone outside of the school bu1ld1ng because no one came to our rescue Again we were overtaken wlth laughter The purpose of some of our laughter was to cox er up that worried feelmg deep down ln our hearts As we sat on the steps by the boys door we began to wonder Just how We would occupy ourselves unt1l mornlng Darkness was creeping ln through the bars that protected the glass windows of the door Because of the shadows that crept through these bars we imagined ourselves behmd prison bars Everything was at its quletest when the stalrs at the other end of the building began to creak lVe all cuddled a llttle closer to each other waiting for the worst to come But nothlng came We told ourselxes that should have a few llghts on However no one made It her buslness to turn them on I became very dlsgusted Wlth myself and 1n slsted that we all go together Anyway I told them we will never gain any atten tlon from the outside world lf we s1t 1n the dark So we groped around together feel mg the walls ln order to find the llghts When they were on our fears vamshed for a whlle and we laughed hllarlously once agaln Soon our galety resolved ltS6lf 1nto self plty I was hungry and tired of slttlng on the steps I was sure I couldnt Slt until morning Pat heard the fire trucks go by She was positlve thev were comin for us Or per haps the bulldmg was on fire What would we do ln a case like that?
