The first steps toward the present Saint Patrick's Cen- tral High School were taken in the year following the close of the Civil War. When the educational outlook was darkest, Bishop McGill appealed to the Sisters of Charity at Emmits- burg for Sisters to conduct a school in Saint Patrick's Parish. The request having been considered favorably, on Sep- tember 3, 1866, Sister Mary In- nocent and four companions opened an academy for girls in a small frame dwelling on 25th Street, near the church. Despite post-war conditions, During the first year of its existence the school was attended by no less than 150 girls. Admission of 75 boys in 1867 was a significant step in the life of the school--for from these first beginnings came our fu- ture priests. In 1868 the Academy was permanently established at the northeast corner of 25th and Franklin Streets. Rev. ROBERT E. O'KANE Pastor l960--19-
