illrrr lgreuentrun mark Shortly after the opening of school we were visited by a drstmgurshel group representing the Fire Departmen and the Chamber of Commerce The purpose of the vrsrt was to award the 1933 banner for the best ine drrll rn the city during Fire Prevention Week Addresses were given by several of the guests concerning the benefits of Fire Prevention Vt eek to tn.. na ron During the course of the assembly two of our outstandm Seniors Joseph Clapham the Class President and MHTIOH Cullen were called upon to speak Mr Clapham s remarks follow rn part It rs indeed a rare privilege to sneak rn Jehalf of St Patrrel s School on thrs occasion Two years ago we had the distinction of having the be t fire dr ll rr the Triple Crtres At that rme we felt very proud to win the coveted trophy and our hearts glowed wrth pride as St Patrrck s was agarn On Top To day we are over Joyed once more at having won this banner significant of the best fire drill durrn 1933 It rs an honor to be permitted to compe 1 with other schools rn this vrcrnrtv for the lfrre Drill Banner but to win thrs trophy twice rn three years is an accomplishment of wh ch few scl ool can boas We shall cherish this banner wrth the deepest regard We are d ter mined however to be so perfect rn our tire drills each succeeding year that rt will be impossible for the Chamber of Commerce of Binghamton to overlook us rn the drstrrblrtron of fire drrll banners And so I gratefully accept this banner and speaking rn behalf of S Patrick s School I wrsh to say that we intend to fulfill all the obligations Miss Cullen s remarks are sketched rn brief It rs the commonly accepted belref that only men and boys ard the nation rn its constant struggle against fire Some of us know how ever that the work of our firemen and men of the country would be utterly useless rf rt were not for the co operation which rs given by the Amer rcan woman It rs she who takes that ounce of prevention by keeprn the attic and cellar free from orly rags and rnflammable articles During Fire Prevention Week and throughout the year rt rs the mother in the home who faith fully follows the directions whrch are given by our Committee on Frre Preventron and Engineering Standards The mother rs prompted to pre cautlon through motives of patriotism and through the most pow erful emo tron love She works for the safety of her' children her family VVhen a small fire breaks out rn the home rf at all possible she will smother the burning article wrth thick rugs or blankets All American citizens realize however that the work of the Fire Depar ments cannot be estimated Every year our firemen save many lives and countless dollars through therr unbridled bravery What cour age must rt take for them to don their rubber coats and set out to combat some of the terrific blazes which have taken place during the las century 'l The San Francisco fire rn 1906 lasted four days dur ing whrch 29 000 build ings were demolished and S350 000 000 lost The historic Chrcago fire which occurred rn 1871 raged wrth fury for two days One report has rt that the Chrcago fire was started by an overturned lantern in a barn where several men were playing cards Then agarn the fire IS attributed to an o1l lantern upset by a cow in the barn of one Mrs O Leary At any rate rt was undoubtedly caused by accident Here rn Saint Patrick s rt rs part of our training to avoid Just such accrdents with their drsas rous results l li ra 4- ra- -:- -:- -:- rr?
