Backed by priests, faculty, and parents, the boys, under the coaching of Bob Lowe, ended a successful season of 13 wins and 7 defeats, a record that any team would be proud of and also earned a right for the state basketball title. The thrilling season opened with a victory as the Shamrocks crushed their intra-city rivals Notre Dame 52-30 and then nipped the Raiders of Lancaster. St. Patrick suffered its first defeat of the season from Groveton, but quickly bounced back in the victory side beating St. Mary of Claremont. The Shamrocks took this second setback at the hands of Gorham and then won the next two, beating Lancaster and the Hilltoppers of St. Johnsbury. The Lowemen fell for the third time in defeat losing to Groveton, followed by a victory over Jay of Maine. Feeling high in spirit the Irish swept through the next three games conquering the Comets of St. Mary from Claremont, Pittsburg, and Gould Academy of- Maine. Upset by Notre Dame the Shamrocks lost the next two, South Paris, Maine and the Huskies from Gorham. Soon, however, we got back to victory and won the three remaining games beating Fryeburg twice and Pittsburg to qualify for the tournament playoffs. n However, the Shamrocks were beaten after a hard fought game in the opening round of the tourney to Newmarket, but upheld their reputation of good sportrrian- ship. A victory closed the doors of the season for the Shamrocks as they chal- lenged Cathedral, 60-40. A record like this speaks well for Mr. Lowe's ability and we know that his work along with assistance of Gregg Keating will long be remembered in the hearts of the departing Seniors. May the luck of the Irish bring the Shamrocks to another fine season next year.
