Acknowledgement The end marks the beginning . . . The Senior Class ending its four years at St. Patrick High School, will soon begin its entrance into a world holding some unforseen future, a future which will present for them opportunities to grow spiritually, mentally and phy sically. Considering the vast amount of training we have received along these lines, it is with the utmost cer tainty that we can face the challenges offered to us With prayer, foresight and the memories we hold of the past, the opportunities presented to 'us will seem encouraging and beneficial. lt is the desire of this class of '60 to thank all those who, in some form or other, have been able to con tribute to our knowledge and our preparation for the future. lt is for those who have taught us to under stand our future, as well as those who have given us the necessary means to reach our destination that we take upon ourselves the construction of this year book .... In gratitude and appreciation. 7 n -dn 4 A ST. It was the same year Brother H. Adrian took charge ofthe administra- tion of the Freshmen Department. From that date to the present time Brother Adrian has held the position of Ad- ministrator of the Freshman Building, Assistant Principal of the Brothers, and the charge of maintenance in both buildings. It was on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, Brother Adrian became the principal of St. Patrick's succeeding Brother L. Paul. In appreciation for his wonderul work in handling the incom- ing freshmen, for the tremendous care he has taken of this school, and in ex- pressing our deepest consideration for his success as the newly appointed prin- cipal, we proudly dedicate this annual. I4 if Brother H. ADRIAN Our new principal Thanksgiving Day, 1959 ABLE ADMINISTRATORS - Brother L. PAUL, F.S.C. Principal of the new St. Patrick's August 1953 - November 1959 BROTHER I. TIMOTHY Assistant Principal Disciplinarian Too often do we think of the work of a school only in terms of teachers and students working to- gether in a classroom. Although this is true to a certain extent. the smooth working of a school depends on other persons and on other factors. These persons work behind the scenes. ln our school they make up the Administra- tion, office, cafeteria, and build- ing maintenance. lt is through the able guidance of the administration that a young man learns the obligations of Christian morality and how to fulfill them. It is certainly true that our administration adminis- ters to the needs of every student. BROTHER J. Under the spiritual direction of Father White and Father Dufficy the three retreats conducted in the school gym gave the boys the opportunity to get closer to Christ. CLOSED RETREAT The closed retreat gives the benefits of three days of mental solitude and deliberation under the guidance of a competent retreat master and the Brother director. Every senior who tries his best to make a good retreat comes home with some definite resolutions and the satisfaction of a job well done. The seniors in each class are given the opportunity to attend the closed retreat at Plano, Illinois, where the Retreat House is located. Each class has a separate retreat master to guide them in the spiritual growth and to prepare them for the future. 92 i ' ffm' mm 1.9! LN? .. ,QM- .,...f ,fl -,,.4-v-' f ff ',,,:v-- ' . The members pray daily in the Chapel that God will bless the Church at large, and Saint Pat- rick in particular, with an increase in vocations. In addition to the daily Rosary, the members spon- sor, once each month, a Vocation Mass and the Vocation Novena. The Club also holds monthly meetings at which speakers from various religious orders'or from various lay vocation groups explain their work. While the main purpose of the Benildus Club is to pray for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, the members also pray that each stu- dent of Saint Patrick may find his true vocation, whether it be to the priesthood, religious life, married life, or the single state. Composed of approximately 110 members, ninety-five in the chorus and fourteen in the band, they are led by Brother Louis C. and his assistant Bro. L. Dominic. Having appeared throughout the city singing for various clubs and societies in addition to their semi-annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, they have had a well-rounded schedule of activities. The Christmas Concert consisted of Christmas carols of many lands sung in their native tongue by the chorus, along with a little cool jazz and swinging dixieland by the band. For the Spring Concert, however, the chorus and band were assisted by the girls of Immaculata High School in presenting their Musicale Americana, a musical tour of the United States. For both the Christmas and Spring Concerts a third ex- clusive concert was held for the sisters of the various aro- - P -chial grammar schools in the vicinity of St. Patrick. A precedent was set by the music department of St. Pat- rick when the Spring Concert was recorded and made avail- able on an L. P. record album. PEP BAND CBack Rowj Piano: R. Ploder, Drums: R. This year a special series of discussions on liberal education was held in con- junction with other Christian Brothers high schools in Chicagoland. The seniors pictured above represented St. Patrick in this first INSIGHTS IN EDUCATION program. Next year both a senior and a junior scholarship club will be organized and will include a discussion on literature and the arts as a supplementary feature. PARTICIPANTS Left to right C8ack Rowj R. Enthusiasm and drive have been the motivating forces of this group and success has been its reward. Competing in the Chicago Drama Festival last December, where competition is keen, the students fared well and were warmly received by directors as well as the audience for their per- formance of The Rising of the Moon. Green and Gold The Green and Gold this year was staffed by a group of 42 budding journalists, under the editorship of senior Jack Hill and the moderatorship of Brother Martin. Tom Lesh was Feature Editor, while Terry Collins handled the sports section: Hill edited all news articles. For the first time a full-time copy editor was appointed, Jerry Seaman: he wrote all headlines, cutlines, and by-lines. One of the principal features of the Green and Gold this year was the expan- sion of the per-issue output to twelve pages, though the number of issues for the year was reduced to four. Feature writers were Thomas Witom, who ran a regular column on prominent alumni: Phil Grise, who wrote articles on present faculty members and also on Seniors of the Month, and Bruce Sieben, who contributed many humorous items. Other feature writers were Rocco Maresse, Mike Prokop, Alan Cichon and James Jason. The sports department was under the guidance of editor Terry Collins, who contributed his views in a regular column Sports Comments. The featuring of sports personalities for each issue was handled by Thomas Renkal. News stories of all kinds came from Roger Stasiak, Louis Gonella, Raymond Suchor, Lawrence Blecka, and Thomas Kozlowicz. Editor-in-Chief Jack Hill was in charge of all straight-news stories for each issue. 'Writing for him were senior Richard Teutsch, juniors, Thomas Moylan, Joe Valaitis, Lawrence Nawrot, Jim Ciecko, Jim Gagnon, and Bob Earleyg sophomores Wayne Kalas, Jim Green, Jim Hill, Mike Charley: and freshmen Tom 0'Neil and Bill Genovese. ln the production department, Martin Costello headed the group of typists: Mike McKeon, Claude Siemen, Bill Mulvihill, and Bob Fowley. The conviction of its tremendous importance has inspired a goodly number of boys to volunteer their services to help the librarian. This provides them with a valuable opportunity to get acquainted with books and their authors, to acquire experience in public relations through their work with their fellow students and to develop a generous spirit of cooperation. The fact that many of these boys per- severe in this type of service for several years demonstrates their appreciation of this opportunity. Thus they are enabled to construct a solid foundation of learning as a firm pad from which to launch them- selves into the orbit of a successful career as student, teacher, scientist, pastor, or any one of the multiple choices of voca- tions adopted by our graduates. f1st Rowl Ed Mashek, Dan Bart, Tom Stanton, Larry Nelson, Tom Jokiel, Thad- deus Kozubal. f2nd Rowl James Schem- itsch, Bernard Windisch, Phillip Ludwig, James Knowlton, Brian Cannata. 13rd Rowj Ed Sakowiez, Tom Gehrke, Eugene Szymaszek, Stanley Waksmanski. I x Bin YA -1 Social Entrance line to Tam Senior Prom Months of preparation and saving came to a gay climax on April 29, 1960, at the Tam 0'Shanter Country Club. It was on this evening that the long awaited Senior Prom became a wonderful reality. All you needed was one look at the happy expressions to tell that everyone was really having the time of his life. The haunting music of Johnny Gilbert and George Fanelli, along with the glamorous setting of the Tam's ballrooms, combined to set the mood and make the whole night truly an Enchanted Evening. After leaving the Tam, the couples stopped off for a late snack and perhaps a few more dances. Then the whole glorious evening faded into memoryg a memory that will be cherished forever both by the seniors and their dates. Over one-third of the students' mothers are active members. This year the programs at the regular monthly meetings of the club have emphasized a better understanding of the work of the school and of education in general. The October meeting featured a discus- sion on The Role of the Home in Education, led by Brother Julius Edgar, FSC, dean of studies at St. Mary's College. In January, Brother Luke Maurelius, Chairman of the English Department at Christian Brothers' College in Memphis, spoke on The Importance of English to the High School Student. At the February meeting, members of our own faculty gave a symposium on The Educational Values of Extra-Curricular Activities. The educational phase of this year's pro- grams was completed at the April meeting when the music and foren- sics departments demonstrated some of their work. Several activities of a fund raising or social nature were also carried on by the club. Among these were the Fashion and Talent Show, St. Mary's College Concert Chorus, two bakes sales, the Christ- mas party, a demonstration called Creative Cookery, and the Senior Father-Son Communion Breakfast. In addition to their regular scheduled activities, the members of the Mothers' Club assisted several activities during the year by serv- ing refreshments and doing similar behind-the-scenes services. The officers, members of the Board, chairmen of activities and their com- mittees, and all the members of the Club are to be highly commended for the generosity they have shown in supporting the school and its many extra-curricular organizations.
