With these words the priest offers the host to the Father. Although We are unworthy to perform such a great act, we partake in it by offering ourselves, in the form of our daily prayers, studies, and activities on the paten with the host, in the hope that God will accept it. In this Way, we make the entire day a continuation of the Mass, a continuous prayer. It is our desire to show you, in the 1958 LA CROIX, how this is being done daily, by the students of Saint Patrickj The continuation of the Holy Gospel . . OPPOSITE PAGE: Hoc est enim Corpus Meum. Qlderf, During his nine years at Saint Patrick's, Brother Gilbert has been both teacher and Guidance Director. As Guidance Director, he arranges for marriage talks and the various testing programs. His present activities also include the moderatorship of the Mothers' Club. Thinking back we see that our success was largely due to his willingness to work for the spiritual and material improvement of the student body. To express our gratitude, we dedicate to you Brother Gilbert, the La Croix of 1958. BROTHER K. GILBERT F. C. C. H EIVIININEE amnel Carchnal SfrifcA Since his arrival in Chicago, His Eminence has always been devoted to the development of a system of 'Catholic education that would be beneficial to the Archdiocese. He has shown this devotion particularly at Saint Patrick's by arranging for the construction of the glass house and the round house and, whenever possible, addressing the graduating class. It is impossible to express our gratitude to His Eminence for what he has done but we wish to thank him as sincerely as we can, and we ask also that God will continue to bless him in the new work to which he has been called. It is through these hands that a young man learns the obligations of Christian morality and how to fulfill them, not only in his own regard but also with regard to others. This is done by the efforts of the administration in setting forth a program of religious and secular studies and by providing a wide range of co-curricular activities. Certainly it is true that the administration administers to the needs of every student. Page Eleven -1' ' si BROTHER IAMES OF MARY, F.S.C. American History National Honor Society MR. Through these activities we have the opportunity to use any talents or abilities which we may possess, for the good of the school and the enjoyment of the student body. In these activities the student is required to use much of the knowledge acquired in the classroom. Page Sixty-four 3 2? ,, 32? The purpose of these days is to enable the students to forget their ordinary cares and concentrate on their relationships with God. More often than not we become so involved in our daily pursuits that We forget our true purpose. Corning as they do in the early part of the year, the retreats serve to aid and correct our thinking. Four of the present seniors were chosen in their junior year. Requirements for the election to the NHS are quite rigid and are based on scholarship, leadership, character, religion and service. Unless a student has these qualities combined, and in an outstanding degree, he loses his chance to become a member. These are the students who seem best to represent the ideal of the school. Numismatics is a hobby which can become very engrossing, and here at school we have a group of boys who have become quite serious about it. Under the direction of Brother Quentin the members of the Club study the ancient coins as Well as modern ones. The history of coins has been as interesting in many respects as the history of man. In order to make collections as complete as possible, auctions and trades are often made at the meetings. This year's membership is limited only to freshmen and sophomores. Because of the limited membership, the members of the Club seem to be a close group and one which works Well together for their own, and for each other's, benefit. VARSITY BASKHB ll The past season showed a hot and cold St. Pat's Heavyweight team. After a very dismal practice season and a loss in the first game of the DePaul Tournament, the Shamrocks showed a sudden burst for the better by winning iour out of the first five League games. At the end of the first round the team held first place in their Section. After the half-Way point though, the team slacked off and lost the last five games. The season was ended with a record of 9 wins, 16 losses Though all the members of the team Work together, it seemed that the seniors, under Mr. Triptow's coaching, were responsible for the real spirit shown by the team. However next year's team, led by Bob Heldmann and Dennis Koslowski, promises us a brighter season. R. Cull: I. Mulcrone: I. Mulvihillz R. Heldmann: T. Franke: R. Wolshon: D. McAu1ifie: D. Although many of their games have been played against parish teams, nevertheless they have proved their ability in games played against other schools. Through our school years we have offered ourselves daily and now we are about to make a new offering, that of our entire future, with all our hopes and ambitions. This is done for us by the priest as he raises the paten at the Offertory of the Graduation Mass. We the Senior Clas of 1958, would like to express our gratitude to the faculty for the patient guidance given us in leading us on to our goal, and to extend to the seniors of years to come our sincere wish that they too may realize their ambitions. AllUICl0RIAN EDWARD IOSEPH ZIESERL Determination to succeed in anything he has undertaken has always been the outstanding characteristic shown by Ed during his four years here at school. That he achieved this success is obvious from both his scholastic record and from the activities in which he has taken part such as the Chemistry Club,, Debate, Chorus, Track, Green and Gold, Swimming and the Art and Poster Club. Because of his fine record. he was one of the few members of his class to be elected to the National Honor Society in his Iunior Year. SAlUlAl0RIA WILLIAM F. MCHUGH Bill, who entered from St, Ferdinand's, has proved himself in each of the things which he has attempted here at school. In the class room he has been outstanding for both his scholarship and friendliness. As to his service to the school there can be no doubt. The activities to which he has belonged are the Chemistry Club, the Catholic Interracial Council, the Green and Gold, the Benildus Club, the Chorus, and the Monogram Club. Debate and Oratory are two of the activities in which Bill has distinguished himself and brought honor to the school. Bill also was elected to the National Honor Society in his Iunior year. Pirate entered St. Patrick's from Immaculate Conception. During his four years at school he has been conspicuous for the example he has set to the members of his class as ct student. We hope that while he is striving to tultill his ambitions he meets with the success he has already achieved. Page One Hundred Seven ROBERT F. ADAMS . . . Bob Entered from St. Ferdinand . . .
