We had always heard that the Christian Brothers made men out of boys, and we were afraid to become men. lt was a bia switch from the nuns to the Brothers, Now, at the end of four years, we want to see how uiuvh we can recall from our hiah school days. As freshies, we met a lot of Brothers. Those who tauaht the freshmen were Brothers Le- ander, Fabian, Edmund, Norbert, Roland, Leo, and lohn C. Mr, Weaver was the aym in- structor. We were briefed on the rules of the school no smokina, wear a tie to class, no eatina in the ayrn, and others The Brothers told us that we were to keep up the school :spirit that had started decades aao. We were told how wonderful the basketball team was when it took the City Championship a few years back. Runnina faster than the upper- classmen was a must, or we would have to carry their books, There were l57 of us, so we outnumbered any other department. With some wonderful boxiuti exhibitions, St. Pats manaaed to aet its first boxina trophy, with Brother Edmund actina as coach. Brother lohn Victorian was the hero of all the boys when he celebrated his 50th year azz a Christian Brother, and we were aiven a holiday. The principal was Brother I. Mark, and Brother Norbert was assistant principal, That, in short, is a history of one year that we shall probably never foraet. The fall of l95U made all of us happy, We were now sophomores. There was someone under us. They were a bunch of 'punks', while we were all uit . Brother l, Mark remained as principal, but Brother Leander took over Brother Norberts place. Mr, Dick Triptow replaced lim Weaver, who went to an unmentionable school. Brother Henry came to St, Pats in the capacity of treasurer and bookkeeper, Only three of our freshman teachers were promoted to the sopho- more year with us . . . Brothers Fabian, Roland, and Leo, The new teachers were Brothers P5 Wai V ,L CUHBENT l'fVlfNTS C'l.AIQf1 1:1-euis mont iriterestina to Ch- ruond, Vfalnh, anfl llotwranich, r i.1.:ibly iie to one of Biwtht-r Michael .1 witty and antuii- ali- .aervationgs , QlNl ' LAW STUDENTS di4cu 'ome hase of so- BUL .bfi . :N :yn :X p tial insurance with the aid of Mr. Triptow. Theodore, Anthony, H. Mark, f. lohn, and Gil' bert, Mr. Al Brennan and Mr. Andy Kovac. We went areat auns in our sophomore year. A sophomore class was first in the New World drive, intramural basketball champs, and third in the Auxiliary Drive. Our loss was the Christian Brothers gain ar: Paul Beneky left St. Pats and went down to Gleneoe. Third year, juniors and upperclassmen. We welcomed six new Brothers as six left. Brothers Fabian and Anthony were the only ones promoted with us. We then welcomed Brothers Patrick, Philip, loel S. and Conrad. Brother L. Paul succeeded Brother l. Mark as principal, and Brother H. Mark succeeded Brother Leander as assistant principal. Brother Conrad built up some fans by start- ina a bowlina leaaue. The teams bowled on Monday and Wednesday at Franklin Lanes. At the end of the year, trophies and medals were aiven. From the way thinas looked, lolm ltussell aot most of them. We were really tops that year. Half of the Auxiliary winners were in the junior depart' ment. We had IB fellows on the semester honor roll, and l5 with perfect attendance. Little did we know that the class araduatina was to be the last one to araduate from the old school. We found out before the end of the year, and it hit us rather hard. More exams to worry about, but we manf aaed to survive them, and in the fall we would be the boss of the school, second only to the Brothers. SlfNlOBSf The time has come to start thinkina about our future. We lost 53 of the boys who started with us in the Freshman year. We only have lflff in the araduatina class. St. Mel let us move in with them. Eleven teachers left, while two new ones came. Brother Michael, Brother Patricks brother, and Brother Alfred came to help make men out of the boys. GETTING BOOKS FROM THEIR LOCKERS before clas are larosz, Bezek, Partipilo, Considine, and Notariano Brother lohn C., a famous landmark at St. Pats, left us. We had a new aroup of teachers headf ina us. Brothers l, Michael, K. Gilbert, loel S., Alfred, Conrad, and Mr. Triptow. With our senior year we inauaurated new hours, l:3U to 5130. We cut out the favorite periods of all students f -lunch, study, and ayin. We dropped football, bowling, and intramurals. We were on our own now. As seniors, the work was just to beain. Take ina over the dances, school paper, year book, and advisina the underclassmen as to the aood and bad points of different thinas fBrothersl. We are in the lecture staae . . . talks from different colleaes, marriaae talks, and the talks in the hall between periods. This is the first year that the student chanaed classes while the Brother stayed in the same room. A aroup of us seniors spent a week end up at St. Marys. We had a swell time. The Brothers and boys of St. Mary's treated us cor- dially. Their friendliness prompted us to ask questions, to which we aot elear answers, A lot of events came up. We posed for pictures, aot our araduation rinas, aot meas ured for araduation aowns and tuxes for the prom, worried about where we were aoina to dia up the money and aet a car to ao to the prom. That about takes care of the past four years, which makes us wish we were freshmen aaain so we wouldn't have to leave St, Pats Now comes a touah time. We have one of three decisions to make. Either ao to a aood colleae, earn a living, or ao to Korea Tech. lt would really be nice, if in 15 or ZU years, we held a class reunion and lU5 successful bust ness and professional men showed up. The Seniors of lQ53 PS. Perpetual aratitude should be rendered to the aood Brothers who endowed us with an inf destructible foundation on which to build a success. 9 Senza:-A ADAME, MANUEL Honor Student l, 2, 3, 4. Hen qweiglat luke tba!! ALTf fOUCfH the heavies' record wasn't the most impressive one compiled in the Catholic league this year, their team spirit and fine co- operation with the coach, an essential point for any team, was certainly of the highest quality. As to team ability -Y f- theirs was sec- ond to none in the league. This could be seen many times in their flashing floor play and their ability to hit from in or out when it was needed. The only trouble was this power was not seen in every aarne. What happened to it? Who knows! Captain Dave Rezek, Vince Notariano, Frank Polak, Don Weslow, Tom Rank, and Ed- die Wisz aave their best in every game. The team wound up the season by winning 3 out of their last 4 contests for a 4 won -f-- 8 lost record and a .333 percentage. The Shamrocks started the season in a blaze of glory by trouncing St. Mel Sl-53. They lost the next start by 2 points in a real heartbreaker against Mt. Carmelts Caravan, this year's South Section champs, After that loss, maybe due to it, the going aot a little rough and the green and gold boys went down in defeat in the next six games. Even in defeat the S, P. A. men upheld the fine tradition of all- around hustle and team spirit for which St. Pat's has always been noted. Leaaue play ended much better than it had started. The team, feeling strong once again, pounced upon St. Elizabeth, St. Rita, and De La Salle and handed all three a loss. The school can be proud of the lf-353 basketball team. Tom Rank, who led his teammates in the scoring columns this season, was unanimously chosen as a starter on the All-Catholic League Quintet, THE HFAVYWEIGHT SQUAD is pictured below just before they won their last league game against De La Salle. Last year's quintet was a beautiful piece of mechanism but none of the first string players were on the squad this year. Two of them graduated and the other three had to switch to the heavyweight club. This left Mr, Triptow with a lot of work to form the new talent without a home gym and with poor practicing hours. The '53 season opened with a loss to our landlords, St. Mel, the margin of defeat being quite definite. The second foe, Mt. Carmel, managed to slip by our lads by four points. This loss really hurt because Mt. Carmel had nothing. The lronmen stepped into the lair next but this time the fly outwitted the spider and the mites lost another. Leo's Lions made the string of losses four in a row, St. Rita's hiked it to five, De La Salle and St. Mel made it six and seven. Finally, the boys in the green and white suits started to resemble a good team and beat Mt, Carmel on their own court, The team wanted to throw a party in celebration. St. Elizabeth also succumbed to the inf creased vigor and vitality of the Patmen to give them a winning streak of two games. Leo, however, decided to put a stop to the streak and did so. Then, thanks to St. Rita, another game was won by a margin of a meager point. This was the third and last win for St. Patricks lights. De La Salle finished the season for this quintet by drubbing them 64434. The end of the season found the midget Shamrocks with a not too impressive record of three wins and nine losses, The nice part to note is that all their wins came in the second round which would indicate the team was coming along . With a loss of only four seniors out of the fourteen-man squad, the mighty mites should find themselves a strong team next year.
