Let us now look below to a few of the many hughllghts of the past season ST PETER S New Brunswick Colng unto the game wlth three straight win we suffered a 37 3l set back St Peter s had a fast hugh scoring qunntet and sparked by their grant center ake l3ornheumer they took an early lead whlch despute all our efforts could not be overcorrte Score Vxfe 3l They 37 OUR LADY OE THE VALLEY Fresh from our defeat by Salnt Peters we encountered a small but qulte capable Valley team dnrected by our former coach Harry Srngleton Valley always dangerous on thenr own court prov d even more so that nught The game was not declded untll the fnnal mlnutes on a set shot by Boots Mclieon Qcore Wo QU They 24 Thus was truly a thnlllng ball game The lead kept changlng hands throughout ln the last mnnute Eduson went ahead by a single polnt but It was then that Ray l3opf startled everyone wlth hrs set shot that after travel lng three quarters of St lVlary s court and nearly hrttlng the cenllng dropped clean through to put us ahead and glve us the game Set re We 3l They 30 THOMAS IEFEERSON Our tradutuonal game wrth efferson thas year had no less excltement than any of our prevlous contests Our record upon enterlng the game was flve wlns agalnst two losses The effmen started off wuth a bang and when the dust had settled the score at the half read 23 ll nn favor of jeff Most of the pe ple st rted movnng toward the exits not wantrng to see what promused to be a vlrtual runaway Undaunted however our boys came out and showed that fghtung spurnt whnch rs bred down here Behlnd the deadly Q27 ak' ir THOMAS EDISON 'A' . . . 280 accurate set shootung of lake Hynes and Ray Bopf and the clever floor play of Tony lacovuno and Tom Kelly we gradually narrowed the gap In the last mnnute of play we went ahead only to have leff again take the lead with less than ten seconds to play Wrth lnghtnnng luke precuslon the ball whipped down the court When on shot at the basket failed Walt Kelly retrieved the ball and threw has never to be forgotten hook shot whlch swnshed cleanly through the net as the whnstle blew endnng the game THE FINAL SCORE READ ST PATRICK -40 IEFFERSON 39 UNION COUNTY TOURNAMENT St Patricks team made basketball history thus year From the Unuon County Tournament we emerged champaons and thus became the flrst parochial team ever to wan the tltle We were also the lnltlal team from Elnzabeth to survive thus tourney since ut tarted enght years ago ln the furst round we came across a lnttle better than mediocre team Next an lnne for us was Sacred Heart They troubled us a lnttle at the start but thanks to the accurate shootung of Ray Bopf wo went ahead and stayed there untul the game ended In the sem: funals whnch as the farthest any Celt team had ever come we were matched wnth a very strong Regional team lnsplred wnth the thought of wnnnnng and anded by Walt Kelly who tallied twenty points we overwhelmed them and galned the finals Here we encountered a fast h gh scorung quintet from Roselle Park Our hopes were set hugh and with the champuonshlp nn view we battled hard and came out the ultumate victors After the tournament the team received a trophy and unduvldual awards On the basis of our wlnnnng this tournament we recelved an unvntatlon to a banquet to be held nn our honor by the Knights of Columbus The dlnner was held on Aorul 27 and the members of the team were presented wnth lnduvndual awards 'A' from Roselle, They proved no match for us and we defeated them 4225.
