l8o CLASS PROPHECY The excltement of Openrng Nught always tends to thnII me but I wasnt quute prepared for the one I would soon recelve I was on my way to see the play No Greater Love by playwrught jean Connelly star rung the well known actor john Hvnes and the Toast of Broadway Marne Mnskowutz a ohn Powers model The supportnng cast Included the dance team Frances Dwyer and john Rugby equally famous In their own pro fessnon As I rushed Into the lobby I colluded wnth Herbert Budreckl theater manager and promising to meet hum Immediately after the play I hurrled down the alsle to my seat just as I was suttlng down to awant the openlng I glanced up and taking has usual long strides was Colonel john Leonard U S Army escorting two trnm Navy nurses whom I dldn t re ognlze at fnrst As they drew closer I realized that they were ean Anderson and Marguerlte Mullen I watched them whale they seated themselves a few rows back then a hush fell over the audience and I realized It was curtain tame An opennng speech delnvered by Governor james Devlm brought about a deafenung applause Now came the play It began wuth the antics of those Two Klngs of Comedy james Mahoney and james Byrnes Before I knew It the fnrst act was flnushed and I made mv way to the lobby where a large crowd was gathernng One of the groups aroused my curloslty and I decided to In vestugate The center of attractuon was Edward McMahon now a Major In the Army Arr Corps and admlrung has medals was our own Ruta Hayes a stewardess with the Unlted Alr Lines Other members of the admiring crowd were Dorothy Brower who as sald to have gvven up a promising career nn Hollywood to get marrled and Mary Smlth who has also settled down to marutal bllss after completing her book The Handling and Care of Children The second act flew by In no tlme and I quickly made my way to the outside of the theater to meet Mr Budreckn who In turn whlsked me off un a cab I discovered we were on our way to a receptaon for the cast of the play When we arrived we found out nt had already begun Agnes Clark and her famous All Gurl Orchestra were playung featuring her popular vocalust Ruta Brlndley Lookrng around I saw on the dance floor the notable athletnc manager john Fay who has already led the Giants to theur third straught pennant He was dancung wnth the leading columnust and reporter of the year Edna Martnn here to cover the story of the recep tion Also on the dance floor were Senator Anthony lacovlno of the State of New jersey and the newly appointed edutor of the Cosmopolntan magazrne Eileen Burk One of the mann events of the evenung was the unveiling of a large portraut of the avlatrlx jean Hangarter who broke three world records It was a masterpiece by the artist john Glllngan whose palntungs can be seen In all well known art gallerles The orchestra stopped and a piano solo by the planust Elizabeth Correua whose twlnklung fingers are the talk of Broadway thrulled us all Quletly enjoying this was Father Thomas Kelly recently ordained Into the Passuon :sts He was talklng wlth Anthony La Ferara owner of the American House Clothuers Also conversing wlth them was Commander Raymond Bopf U S Navy My observatuons were Interrupted by the voices of Teresa Petrone now an establushed dress designer and Eluzabeth Grampp an Arthur Murray dancing teacher They were talking to john Svachak the sports editor who ns rapndly gaming recognntlon In thus fneld Also con rbutlng to the conversatronal hum was Margaret Flynn now head lubrarnan of the New York Lubrary Before leavnng I met Dorothy Burns the well known raduo announcer on the new Grape Nuts Flakes program Monnca Logan the telephone operator In the Senate Bulldlng and Marne Hayes now prlncupal of Berkeley College The party soon dwindled and as we bade each other goodbye I reallzed how good God was to the CLASS OF 44 - 11 . . 1, . 1 1 . l H 11 . 1 ' 14 11 - 1 j . v .
