K4 ' Ifh ., X 3 N ui Thirty-one boys reported to Coach Russ Freel or the first practice session of basketball The Freshmen topped the list with eleven candidates then came the Sophomores with nine the Juniors with six the Seniors finished off the roster with five Berger Cole Seeliger Wamsley Allessio and Bocol were the returning A lettermen from the previous season Gage had won his B Award the year before and of the nine Sophomores Anhorn Dndlon Lonneker Mellah ORourke Ropella Sams and Schille were the owners of Frosh Numerals The Irish began the season perhaps a little over rated They had lost but one Senior from the team the previous campaign In County League competu tion they had to be satisfied with second place because of dual loss to Waltsburg This was the first time the Irish relinquished the crown since 1945 The lrlsh had comparatively easy victories over the other Walla Walla County teams Extra League competition was extra tough In the nine games before Christmas the Irish found themselves on the short end of the score seven to turn the tables They dropped a one point decision to the Whitman College Frosh fthe finest game the Irish have ever played many saidj trounced Dayton SUB DISTRICT PLAY St Pat s Connell St Pat s Asotin St Pat s 72 Pomeroy 81-61 ran up over 70 points in three other games and finished out the regular season with but two more losses In sub district tournament play they pulled away from Connell in the final period to win an easy 59 43 victory then they dropped a 55 48 decision to Asotln But they came back strong the final night to run up the highest score of the tournament taking Pomeroy to the tune of 72 52 In district play the Irish grabbed a quick lead over Endicott Cthird ranked in the state At half time It was 27 27 all In the final periods superior height began to tell and Endicott pulled away from them to take the victory The following afternoon the Irish came from behind in the last period to grab a five point lead and outlast Tekoa 51 50 the first victory for the Irish in District play in a good number of years Predictions for next year?
