Lf P K J 1. GARY COLE Co-Captain Second Conference Team Football practice began for thirty varsity grid can- didates on September lst. Ten of them were Senior lettermen. Coaches Russ Freel and Cece Walden put the boys through their tune-up paces in preparation for the season's opener on September 13th. TOUCHET-the lrish drove for a touchdown the first time they got their hands on the ball and added a touchdown in each quarter to win going away. Our rugged ground attack rolled with machine-like smoothness over the outmanned indians. ELGIN-we started out strong-a ninety-five yard drive for first T.D. followed a few plays later by a fumble recovery and another T.D. The Husky offense dominated the second half, but our defense was stingy enough to eke out a Father Triesch one point victory. ECHO-strictly a night for breaks. We out-gained ad out-downed the Cougars, but a stolen ball, a costly fumble, and a touchdown called back, decided the margin. It was our first loss of the season. POMEROY-we played good football in the middle of the field, but two touchdown drives bogged down as they neared the goal. That's the story as we dropped a close one by one touchdown margin. DAYTON- The lrish from Walla Walla put a scare into local fans . . . the paper says. Top- ranged Dayton had to come from behind in the second half to get a decision over the hard-running All-Conference First Team Inspiration Award WENDELL WALMSLEY JOE BASTA Co-Captain Second Conference Team lrish. It was perhaps our best performance of the season. WAITSBURG-for the first time in the season our aerial game sparked. Waitsburg threw up a tough first half defense in the warm afternoon game, but the lrish came through for their first conference victory. COLFAX-it was our homecoming game, and we put out our best to win it, but seven of our passes were intercepted. That was a little too much for the hard-fighting lrish to overcome. We were held scoreless for the first time in the season. WALLOWA-the Wallowa Cougars, Oregon State Class B champs tor a second year in a row, were too much of a grid machine for the lrish. The game was a wild, high-scoring affair-ten touch- downs to four. But on first downs the statistics were much evener, twenty-one for Wallowa and twenty for us. WAITSBURG-the grid finale of the year-and it was ours all the way. In the waning moments of the game we got the first field goal of St. Pat's football history. That's the football story of 1952. We got four victories in nine attempts against tough opposition. Except for one game, the touchdown margin was close and the statistics even closer. With a larger enrollment from year to year, we are building a deeper, better-balanced squad. Football at St. Pat's is definitely on the climb. All-Conference First Team DICK BERGER Q' 15. ff ll , EL.
