Classes were im orTanT, buT almosT more so. aT leasT Tor many. were The exTra class acTiviTies. Many of our aiihers and moThers can say in TruT . l don'T remember so much oi whaT I learned in class, buT we had a wonderTul Time aT co ege In if I All ThaT's changed now. Or so iT seems. Our socieTy's increasing demand Tor a college educaTion Tor more and more people, The sTepped-up need Tor added numbers oT people prepared Tor graduaTe school, The new emphasis on research and creaTive worlc in undergraduaTe years all mean a greaTer sTress on scholarship. on good grades, and on The winning oT awards and Tellowships. Where does This lead? To a new breed oT inTellecTuals? To a naTion reborn To be a paradise oT learning? To The Truly good liTe ? Even as we ask we wonder. ST. OlaT College sTudenTs have made good academic records boTh in college and beyond. This is To be encouraged. BUT iT could be in The coming years, and even now, ThaT in The rush Tor learning we need To reTlecT on why we do This and where iT all will lead. And we need ThaT added dimension of clepTh which change of pace or emphasis in academic liTe cannoT desTroy or even deeply disTurb by which we lcnow ThaT we are men, creaTures of God, people of spiriT and will as well as mind, needing each oTher as well as our own privaTe successes in life. The Truly good life is The one made rich and deep by all The experiences of mind ThaT The besT in college can oTTer, TogeTher wiTh The TaiTh in God and love Tor one's Tellows ThaT gives subsTance a nd breadTh To all we know and do.
