Dan Ferrigan Dan Ferrigan loved people, St. Norbert College, and life. But this sophomore student lost his life on Easter Sunday, 1973. Dan was the antithesis of apathy, always in-;'r volved, always caring. His leader- ship and organizational qualitie were evident in his activities: he was treasurer of Berne Hall, a member of SNCCS, co-chairman of Winter Carnival, campaigner for McGovern, a brother of the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity, a union employee, and a worker for, Blood Drives and the Mueci far _ Dystrophy Drive. He had also£ been elected Social Chairrnan of PSE and Co-chairman f Sf ial Events on CAB for the 1973-74 £ school year. As a student, he Was a diligent worker, planning to rqa- « jor in Psychology an minfcr in Biology. t Danny's personality and c'onta-} gious smile are gone, bq|t th af-B 1 feet he had on the people' of this campus and the spirit he radjated H will live forever. u„ V Q • Htt « Editor David J. They are the days in which we absorb; while on the do-much days we try to make others absorb from us whatever we have in over-plus: ribbons, wisdom or cheese. If we oftener eased the strain on our eyes and minds, we should be enriched by impressions that in our usual attent and mastering attitude we refuse to heed. Charles M. Skinner 15 Time is not measured by the passing of years, but by what one does, what one feels, and what one achieves Nehru I am living alone now, though people are all around — guess. I can't explain all these things that are happening inside of myself. But sometimes when a friend is near I feel myself opening, just a little ... but it's a start . J. K. 18 Isn't life glorious! Isn't it grand! Here — take it — hold it in your hand; Squeeze every drop of it into your soul. Drink of the joy of it, sun-sweet and whole! Laugh with the love of it, burst into song! Scatter its richness as you stride along! Isn't life splendid — and isn't it great We can always start living — it's never too late! — Helen Laurie Marshall I cannot invent New things, Like the airships Which sail On silver wings; But today A wonderful thought In the dawn was given And the stripes of my robe, Shining from wear. Were suddenly fair. Bright with a light Falling from heaven — Gold, and silver, and bronze Lights from the windows of Heaven. And the thought Was this: That a secret plan Is hid in my hand; That my hand is big, CIRCULATE 'SCIENCE LIBRARY PERIODICALS ... Big, Because of this plan. That God, Who dwells in my hand. Knows this secret plan Of the things He will do for the world Using my hand! — Toyohiko Kagawa n 22 iZjxll Things don't change ? 6 •i- 29 30 Liacs N EESSENSCAROLALESI RICHARD ANTON ELj lSTEPHEN AUGUSTINEKENNETHBACHM AN R ENCEBAUMGARTNERMARYBAUMGARTNERPHYLLISBEAUVAISGREGORYBENDTWILLIAK BRASHWILLI AM BREN NERBRUCEBRU MM ONDROBERTBRUNN ERSUSAN BRUNO ANTHOI KIDA VIDBUSHCHRISTINEBRYNEEDWARDCALLAGHANBRIANCAMPERPAULETTECAPPO NNYCHOWLAWRENCE CLARK] AM ESCLEGG]OHNCLIFFORDj AMES CLOUTHIERRAYNELLl JRTNEYMARYCRAANENFRROBER TCZARNECKIMARYDALESKEPETERDALUGATHOMASD. The season started before Easter at Steven's Point, where they split a doubleheader, losing the first game by a score of 7-2, but winning the second 3-2. Next was a doubleheader at Parkside, where the Knights came out on top in the first game 2-1, but were held hitless in the second 5-0. In their third doubleheader, they had a double loss, being shut out in the first game 5-0, and losing the second game 2-1, both in favor of Milton. But the Knights poured on the power in their first home appearance, sweeping two from Lawrence, 2-1, and 7-5. At Lewis, the team lost 15-2. They were also beaten by Loras, by a score of 4-2. The Knights split their last doubleheader with Lawrence, winning the first game 5-4 and losing the second 2-1. So, the Norber-tines, under the coaching of Mel Nicks, ended the season with an almost even record of 5 wins and 7 losses. 73 f PA Hockey Team Skates to a 2-4-1 Season fh Both opponents get a kick out of the game! The event featured competitive skits ranging from a rather humorous rendition of Hee-Haw by Kappa Beta Tau and Sigma Nu Chi to Theta Phi's 'Love, St. Norbert Style'. Kappa Chi took second with an uncharacteristic spoof on SNC and the Admissions Department. TLU concluded the program with a 'Variety Show' which exhibited the many talents of the brothers of Tau Lambda Upsilon. Jimmy Hyduke and Joe Luna provided comical continuity to Kapers as they emceed the activities. 85 One should keep to old roads and old friends. — German proverb October Fest . . . Among the performers presenting rock, country and western, rhythm and blues, and folk, were Roger, Wendy, and Sam, Fontilla, Barry Drake, Struff and Terry, Ellen Kearney, Storey and Burke, and Dale Vernon. A Coffeehouse concert held in the Fine Arts building starred The Argus, Lonaie Knight, and Turtle Creek. Some instruments played were acoustic folk guitars, pianos, flutes, harmonicas, kazoos, and an autoharp. Directing the Coffeehouse this year were Mark Allen and Mike Bielmeier. Together, they hosted great talent, and warmly welcomed Coffeehouse goers with the, coffee, and popcorn. 88 Ellen Kearney Fred Argir Struff Terry Barry Drake 89 Rockin' and Rc With the oldy but moldy rock and roll revival, the cafeteria was the scene of good old time fun this year. Record hops, featuring mostly Beatle and Beachboy hits and offering guys the chance to dedicate a song to their gal drew huge crowds. Many of them, either greased up or dressed as bobby-soxers, twisted and boogied the night away. Other cafe dances starred groups such as Dynamite Duck, Jules Blattner, Lvory, Palmer House, Senior Exhibit, Purple People, Winfield Road, Carnaby Street, and Farm. 90 )IHn''Round the Clock Winter Carnival — In the Spring of '73 ready to kick ass foosball tourney tug-o-war the royal oil pool tourney keen 50's sock hop beards son of movie orgy pre-concert blow outs greasers hair: longest, curliest, shortest ready to kick ass snowball?! accuracy, distance rock around the clock bobbie-soxers mckendree spring cross country jeopardy pancakes broom hockey black and blue knees three-man relay the wild one marlon brando beer chugging no snow knight klub basketball vs. macmurray won 101-83 the purple people ready to kick ass 92 94 ALPHA SIGMA CHI Bottom Row: L. Underlying this cause was an all-out effort to promote and protect student rights. A main direction was exemplified during the 2nd semester by S.G.A.'s concern over the academic atmosphere of the college. S.G.A. sponsored programs included the Community Celebration, a leadership workshop, the SNC Congressional Session and a stated proposal of academic priorities and demands. This year saw the Black students gain a seat on the Executive Board through a student-wide referendum. Former Vice-President Dean Lenhart took over President Rick Uttich's position after the busy and productive first semester was completed. A later election saw Tom Clifford gain the Vice-Presidential position. In President Dean Lenhart's own words, “If Student Government somehow motivated different people to become involved with the campus community directly, it then did in fact, achieve something profound — an atmosphere of shared opinions and knowledge leading to ultimate personal growth and community. S.G.A. Makes Commitment to Community in '73 108 C.A.B. Activists Promote Varied Activities The College Activities Board has sponsored numerous cultural, social, and recreational events this past year. The program has ranged from such projects as Yoga Class, swimming, a wine tasting party and a Weight Watchers Club to Vic Perry, Dizzy Gillespie and continuous art exhibits with weekly movies and monthly coffeehouse acts in between. C.A.B.'s newly added feature, the Video Tape Network, brought such classics as Groove Tube , Reefer Madness and Free Concert Its purpose being to provide a variety of educational as well as entertaining programs, the College Activities Board surpassed its goals this year. 109 Yearbook Completed After Shakey Start! 1 10 The 1973 Yearbook had been quite an issue this year. Campus-wide apathy and unwillingness to contribute time caused the first and second editors to resign from their posts. Immediately, an emergency meeting of the yearbook was held, calling the remainder of the staff together and pleading to any new members to attend. A completely new group of students formulated a staff, headed by editor Dave Hornung, and associate editor, Jill Klobucar. Other staff members included Janet Gas-taldello and Mary Regan, copy; Pete Houlihan, Annette Kozial, Jill Reginato, Pam Justin, Mary Elbrecht, and Colleen Carroll, layout; Kathy De Rosia, business; Bill Frenz, layout, typing, photography, in short, our all-around handiman; Dennis Corry, typing; Loretta Shem, Frank Flanagan, Ken Kapral, Mark O'Reilly, Bob Preston, and Aimee Harrer, photography; and Kay Lambert, Secretary to the Dean of Student Life, typist. Although undertaken more than six months late, the new staff energetically coerced to produce the 73 yearbook in the short time allotted. m St. Nontext Turn From Left to Right, J. Cwyer, T. A noted Shakespearean scholar, the Reverend Patrick N. Butler, O. Praem., was named Professor Emeritus, English, at commencement ceremonies at St. Norbert College in 1971. He served as chairman of the SNC English department from 1930 to 1961 and as Dean of the College from 1932 to 1942. Fr. Butler, who completed his undergraduate studies at St. Norbert College in 1922, received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He also pursued graduate studies in theology at St. Norbert Seminary. The educator was a favorite among the students and was preceded by a glowing reputation wherever he went. Some of the adjectives used to describe the man were keen, brilliant, and perceptive. His great love of Shakespeare inspired many students to a similar affinity. In an initial Shakespeare class is quoted as beginning with I am almost jealous of you students meeting Shakespeare for the first time. There is a magic in that encounter and although I have read him many times and learn more with each reading, there is nothing quite equal to that first rendezvous. Under his tutorage many students came to understand the meaning of Shakespeare as well as gaining different insights into Fr. Butler, his personality unraveling in a myriad of wonder. It was indeed sad that the great literary spirit which was incarnate in Fr. Butler should depart from our community last February after a half-century of unselfish service. l?2 The Board of Trustees Left To Right: Rev. Julian C. Resch, Robert E. Kissel, Rev. Dennis M.
