The Homecoming Mass Committee, headed by Isa Perez and Chris Ugero, decided on the theme of Perserverance. Music was provided by a group from Corpus Christi Church. The corinotion ceremony began with the introduction of the ceremony commissioner, Rosie Gonzales and co-commissioners Sylvia Ugarte and Victor Rodriguez. This years guest speaker, Mr. Matthew Giacolone, talked about the sense of community that had been exhibited by all of the students who had worked in making this celebration a success. Mr. Giacolone was followed by Alex Alas, who mode the traditional homecoming speech by a member of the football team. Special thanks were expressed to Homecoming Commissioner Christina Rojas and her two co-commissioners, Cirina Kushiner ond Debbie Rocha. The evening of October 27 was a night for ecstatic celebration as the mighty Green Machine triumphantly conquered the Cathedral Phantoms by a score of 26 — 6. A unique feature of the 1979 Homecoming field ceremony were the horse-drawn buggies used to carry the court and escorts. The flag team, along with the song leaders, gave a tremendous show of skill and grace. Head commissioner Suzanne Verge and her co-commissioners Gina Gambill and Betsy Gibbons deserve thanks for organizing such a lovely ceremony. 12 WELCOME WEEK This year. Welcome Week started off with a bang. Monday, the sophomore class sponsored a bubble gum blowing contest. Ms. Sherrill Asadoor, pictured at right, was the winner. Tuesday, the junior class sponsored a new game called Pin the Tail on the Freshmen. Seniors were blindfolded and given tails to pin on their little brothers and sisters. The winning freshman, Marie LaFia, was then given the special honor of singing the Alma Mater. Wednesday there was a watermelon eating con- test sponsored by the Seniors and won by Ram Miller. I 16 JUNIOR RING CEREMONY This years Junior Ring Ceremony took place on Friday, Oct. 12, in Cantwell Auditorium. Starting things off was Junior Class President, Karen Cogley, who introduced Mrs. Singer, Junior Class Moderator and Father William Brelsford, Vice Principal. Karen also read a poem dealing with the ceremonies theme, Superstars . After Father Brelsford blessed the rings the name of each Junior was called and they came forward to receive a ring, a white carnation and a scroll. Over the years, the Junior Ring Ceremony has turned into something other than just a ring ceremony. It has become a symbol of class spirit among that group of students known as Juniors. 18 CAMPUS MINISTRY The Campus Ministry program has provided various activities to futher the spiritual and community dimensions of student life. The focus of the program is on two goals: to experience God and to experience God's love in one another. Retreats have become very popular — the day off school has been an enriching experience for each homeroom as they pray and share together. Optional overnight retreats prepared the way for a weekend retreat in Chino for 20 Juniors and 30 Seniors in February. The whole school community has benefited spiritually by the breakthrough with God and with each other. Student Body Masses, communal penance services and Christian service projects are expressions of the faith-life at St. Monica's. Prayerful, simple and beautiful liturgies help us worship together at the Eucharist. We take time at Advent and Lent to support one another as we ask forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We share with our poor and needy neighbors through Christian service projects. Since 1979 was International Year of the Child, St. Monica's gave generiously to an orphanage in Tijuana and UNICEF. 19 20 21 Once again Christmas was an exciting time around St. Monica's. Starting with Hall Decorating which made everyone feel like it was the season to be jolly. Next there was a dress-up day which filled the campus with lots of Santas and reindeer. The Christmas Mass this year was beautifully planned by the students, and the visiting choir from Alamany High added the finishing touch. Last of all the wild and crazy Christmas assembly which sent everyone home for the holidays with light hearts. 22 23 COUNTRY DUMPLIN’S Country Dumplin's, an entertaining musical comedy, was enthusiastically presented by a spirited group of St. Monica students under the direction of Davida Wills, St. Mo's multi-talented drama instructor. The show opened on February 29, with alot of built-up excitement behind stage. Students in the production worked long and hard to entertain the audience. With weekend practices and night rehearsals, cast members built up and developed their individual characters and became different people on stage. The show was presented for five nights, running two weekends. Tryouts were held in the beginning of the school year, although the actual play had not been decided upon. The play Country Dumplin's was finally chosen, originally written by David J. Belrose. 24 25 93 0861 XNlI-IH HI JINX 1980 STAGES OF LIFE Commissioner: Debbie Spinks Co-Commissioners: Debbie Rocha and Andrea Vergara The Freshmen presented their Hi Jinx princess, Kristen Pettet, in a beautiful lavender dress. Her entrance was precided by a humorous skit portraying the activities of young adults; health spas, dancing, etc. . . . The Sophomores decided to demonstrate their baby theme and all jumped into giant cribs to present to the audience a skit about nursery life. Their class princess, Isa Perez, popped out of a huge Jack-in-the-Box. The Teenage Juniors brought their audience through different eras as seen by adolesents; punk rock, the disco craze, hippie age and the rolling 50's. Their princess, Karen Cogley, was presented with all smiles, and later crowned Hi-Jinx '80 Queen. The old Folks seniors reminisced about the good old days and wishing to be young again. Ever smiling Cindy Herrick appeared, by the order of a good fairy, as the 1980 Senior Class princess. During the last week of January, Midsession was offered to students as a sort of recuperation period after finals. It provided such classes as Body Surfing, Arts and Crafts, trips and depth studies. Also included were various career opportunity classes which let the students explore many of the possible occupations and professions available to them. During the week of Midsession 1980, St. Monica students could be found almost anywhere. There was the annual trip to Yosemite, a trip south of the border to Mexico City and Acapulco, and another group of students spent their week touring California college campuses. Depth study classes were an important part of Midsession Week. The depth studies were basically academic, according to Mrs. Cheri Blackburn, co-director of Midsession. They were also different types of classes than are normally offered in the average curriculum, ranging from Film Criticism to Machine Calculators. A big THANK YOU to Sister Katherine Jean and Mrs. Cheri Blackburn for all the hard work they did to make this a great week for all of us. 32 33 This years Sophomore Slave Auction was held on January 21. It proved to be a rowdy and exciting activity for all. The students were very cooperative, and Mr. Giacalone made a very impressive auctioneer. Bidding was opened at 500 per slave and eager students kept bidding higher and higher until they ran out of money and one buyer emerged successful — as the owner of a 1980 Sophomore Slave! Slave Luz Mora went for $71.02, and our own Mr. Giacalone sold for $53.00. Dispite the embarrassing costumes and silly stunts (ring around the rosie anyone?) slave day was great fun for all and very profitable for the Soph, class. 34 35 JOG A THON The first annual Jog-a-thon was run this year as the school's major fund-raiser, replacing the usual candy sale. Students, parents and faculty participation gave us our quota in a quick, fun, healthy way. $10,000 was made in one hour of running and walking. The total number of participants was 282. Enthusiasm was high during each sporting event from football games to swim meets. Pep Club sponsored several activities such as traditional bake sales, numerous signs for games, as well as those embarrassing but fun, Valagrams. Whodunit? What happened? What's the real story? These questions and more were answered in each edition of the MARINER. This year, the hard working and dedicated staff members spent long hours working on stories to reach each deadline. Thanks to creative writers, talented photographers, sharp-eyed proof-readers, an ever dependable typist, and a fantastic ad staff, the newspaper thrived, fulfilling its goal of informing St. Mo's readers. The Club trys to plan at least one long trip to Utah every year during the Christmas holidays and members stay in shape with weekend trips to Big Bear and Mommoth. PRESIDENT TIM HERBST AND SOCIAL ASSISTANTS 55 GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girl's Athletic Association (G.A.A.) is a club designed essentially to support the girl's athletic teams at Saint Monica. The club is made up of students interested in getting involved in a varity of activities to raise school spirit and display school pride to those who visit our campus during athletic events. OFFICERS Annette Morales, Terri Gutierrez, Becky Ruberacker 56 OUTDOORS CLUB The ultimate contrast to everyday scholarly activities is to be found outside in nature, and the basic function of the Outdoors Club is to provide the opportunity for students to experience the Great Outdoors. Their outings consist mainly of short hikes taken on the weekends, with one or two longer trips that entail camping overnight. 57 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Eligibility for the Notional Honor Society is based on a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 in scholarship. A student must be nominated for membership by a faculty member on the basis of service, leadership and character, and the nomination must then be approved by a membership board. CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION The purpose of C.S.F. is to encourage scholarship and service among high school students. The motto of the federation is Scholarship for Service. Admission into C.S.F. is open to all students who earn the required scholarship points. Students qualify for membership in C.S.F. on the basis of semester grades. Because all of us as students are trying to make St. Monica's the best school we can. As a council we came up with three goals which we centered our attention around this year. We felt that with these goals we could help St. Mo's be the school we love. The goals where: 1. Good lines of communication within the establishment. 2. Build up school pride. 3. Build a Christian community. TERE RODRIGUEZ A.S.B. President 60 TECHNICAL COMMITTEE HOUSE COMMITTEE « r “ ',1 r5P a.. iSEn 'i B r'- --. ' • T •• •H SPORTS Row 1: P. Freeman, A. Alas, C. Wright. We started preparing for the season early in July by lifting weights and exercising to condition ourselves. Winning all of our preseason games we found ourselves going into league with an unblemished record. After several wins, and a few losses, we hoped to go on to the C.I.F. playoffs . . . but to everyones disappointment we were not chosen . . . ending one of the best seasons of football in the history of St. Monica's High. Next season, one more year of experience under their sweatsuits will remedy that. Coach Lauer, formerly of Chaminade High School, felt that this was a rebuilding year for the Mariners. The Mariners also had help from assistant coahces Jimmy Farrel and Paul Provost and team manager Alex Romolais. Overall, the Mariners had a good year. The Green Machine ended their season with center Frank Tapanes the tallest player at six feet, four inches and also the leading rebounder with 10 per game. Steve Dragovich, a three-year letterman, was the highest scorer with an average of 20 points per game. Steve's brother, Jeff, was the second highest scorer of the team with 13 points per game. Captain Terri Gutierrez said, Our points were not shown on the scoreboard, but through our attitude and sportsmanship we are a winning team. The team this year was plagued with injuries. Halfway through the season it lost Ramona Garnett due to a chipped ankle, Angela Smith due to torn ligaments in her knee, and Terri Gutierrez due to an injured shoulder. This affected the team's performance greatly not only through the loss of three starters but also through the break up of the family on the court. The Junior Varsity also had some troubles this year, ending with a record of five wins and nine losses. The girls put a lot of time and energy into their season and would like to take this chance to thank all of the fans who supported them at the Home games. They would especially like to thank the Girls Athletic Association who made all of the game posters and were there to cheer the team on. Reilley, Robin Atkenson, Phil Herbst, Tina Savage, Valerie DeLuca, Monica Neissen and divers Jill McDonald and Melissa Kelly. Their strength, courage and dedication is shown by getting up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings to be at swim workouts at 6:00 a.m., held at Venice High School. 92 94 VARSITY BASEBALL This year the Saint Monica varsity baseball team, coached by Jim Dela Torre, is looking towards finishing strong and going to the Santa Fe League playoffs. Although there is a great deal of effort from the whole team for each win, certain players have contributed greatly to each game. Hurlers pitching well this season are Steve Dragovich and Mike Bomberger, and hitting power is generated especially from the bats of these two and John Bieniasz. Overall though, it cannot be stressed enough that, Our team ability is not credited to any one individual performance, rather, the team's success and ability lies within the total team. 95 96 Manager, Marie Lynch, Lisa Girona, Bertha Gonzalez, Terri Gutierrez, Amparo Alcala, Coach Macias, Suzie Korth, Ingrid Bragg, Andrea Vergara, Mary Hernandez, Jackie Burton, Ruth Valdivia, Mary Hernandez, Grainne Clarke — Stats, Monique Salisbury — Bat Girl, Joanne Manzella — Bat Girl. Not pictured — Tere Rodriguez and Karrie Stephenson. The team this year is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have played together in years past. Our main asset for the season is teamwork. The team displays much talent which makes our games interesting and exciting for all. Right now we are a quarter of the way into the season with a 2-2 record. The losses went to St. Bernard 0-10, and St. Mary 14-22. Our wins came with another game against St. Bernard, defeating them 6-5 and a triumph over Notre Dame 1 1-7. The last game against St. Bernard was a special win because St. Monica has not beaten St. Bernard in softball in 3 years. Overall, our team is spirited, talented, and dedicated, and we hope to have a winning season. 98 SOFTBALL 99 TRACK AND FIELD This year, under the direction of Mr. Bernard Wooten, St. Monica's has a very dedicated track and field team. His athletes attend practice daily, either at 6:00 a.m. or after school. Mr. Wooten maintains that this discipline separates those who are not serious from those who are. The results of this dedication show up in the team performance. The 440 relay team, consisting of Greg Da I la I, Bob Smith, Cliff Williams, and Phil Freeman, is 3 5 of a second away from breaking the school record. The rest of the members are also doing well and helping to build a strong, well-rounded team. Spirit is also on the rise. The members identify as a group, have pride, and don't want to settle for second best. 100 101 104 109 SISTER MARIAN CHRISTENSEN DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND PUBLIC RELATIONS Sophomore Councelor Parent's Newsbulletin Alumni Moderator no SHERRILL ASADOOR Freshmen Moderator Religious Studies Social Studies CHERI BLACKBURN Department Chairperson Spanish Sophomore Moderator Midsession Coordinator KAY BAYLEY Department Chairperson Home Economics Pres., Faculty Association GHISLAINE BRANDT French Spanish Freshmen Homeroom JOANN CARATOZOLO Mathematics Freshmen Homeroom in SISTER ROBERTA CARSON Department Chairperson Fine Arts MARTIN CONWELL Religious Studies Christian Service Coordinator KATHLEEN CONWELL Religious Studies CATHERINE CUNNINGHAM English Freshmen Homeroom SISTER ALBERTA CURRAN Fine Arts Yearbook Moderator 112 ELIZABETH DEWDNEY Chairperson N.H.S.
