I9S7 COM PAS PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF SAINT MONICA'S HIGH SCHOOL SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA DEDICATION To our patroness. Saint Monica, we dedicate our school and yearbook in 1957. We hope that her special virtues of love and perse- verance may help us throughout our lives. A time will come when all of us will look back and see these days as we cannot see them now — as through the eyes of one experienced. Then we can truly appreciate the love and perseverance that made all these days possible. With her virtue and her motherhood, Monica is the guardian of every Mariner, inspiring and teaching by her Christ-like example. THEME We, of the younger generation, often hear talk of the good old days, usually from older people still living in the past. We are not convinced. We believe that the future holds more promise for a stronger America, offer- ing its citizens the highest standards of liv- ing the world has ever known. Certainly there will be serious problems to solve. We thank God for our Catholic educa- tion which will enable us, the leaders of to- morrow, to solve these problems, and pro- mote peace on earth and good will towards all mankind. The ultimate purpose of that educational program is set forth on the plaque on our new building — to cooperate with Divine Grace in the formation of true and perfect Christians. May that purpose be realized in the life of each of you. The sacrifices of your patents, the labors of your teachers, and your own time and ef- forts, will then not have been in vain. May our Lord bless you abundantly always, through the hands of Mary, our Immaculate Mother, and St. Monica, our glorious Patroness. 8 Brother Hilary Principal Brother Cornelius Dean of Boys BROTHERS OF ST. Four years of high school are behind us: Ahead is life filled with its hopes and joys, worries and sorrows. Looking back on our high school days, we re- member our welcome as freshmen. In our soph- omore year the Symphony of a Starry Night'' was the first dance our class sponsored. At last upper classmen, we recall our junior movie, “The Glenn Miller Story,'' the record dance, “The Jun- ior Jump, and the boys’ new jacket, and to climax this eventful year, our prom, Misty Isle. The shouts we gave when we won the first C.I.F. basketball crown for our Alma Mater will ring in our hearts for a long time to come. This brings us to our last and final year, it seem- ed it would never come but we had our Senior rings as material proof. With it came the Anni- versary Ball, the senior play, the Junior-Senior Prom, and the last games we will see as mem- bers of St. Monica's High School. We wish to offer our thanks to Monsignor O'Flaherty, the Brothers of St. Patrick, and the Sisters of the Holy Names, and all those who have helped to make our last year the most wonderful of the four. As we finish our junior year and go a step higher on the ladder to the future we will never forget the memorable events which made this year the most successful one we've had. Our Junior movie, “So Big, fol- lowed by our record dance, Tonight You Belong to Me, the jackets our junior boys so proudly wore, the excitement over ordering our senior rings, our marvelous prom, the games we play- ed and the fun we had all helped to make this year one never to be forgotten. We extend our sincere thanks to our moderators and to the outgoing senior class we wish to offer our con- gratulations, and best wishes for the future. Our junior year! It has lived up to our highest ex- pectations. We look ahead with enthusiasm to next year, our senior year, our last year at St. Monica's and hope that it will be as memorable as the others have proven to have been. Class officers: First row: S. We had the happy experience of working together and sponsoring our first dance for the student body, the Snowflake Swirl. The boys helped make our football, basket- ball and other teams play their best seasons, and bring victories to St. Monica's. We re proud also of our girls and their skill on the volleyball and basket- ball courts. For these reasons we will always remem- ber our Sophomore year and look forward to our Junior and Senior years. 41 First Row: C. Hinchey, R. Lello, I. Azois, D. Dye. M. Martinez, J. Pare. For instance, the Freshmen Welcome Dance which, thanks to the Seniors, made us feel at home at Saint Monica’s. There were other dances and more fun too. There were basketball games and football games, Hi Jinx, and Green and Gold Day, but these are not the only reasons we came to Saint Monica's. We came to learn and we, the Freshmen Class, did learn what a won- derful school and what a terrific faculty Saint Monica’s really has. 1st Row: M. I. Fry, S. Hemenez. M. P. LeRoy, C. Bosrock, L. Sister Felice Marie, who succeeded the position of moderator in 1953, supervised the writ- ing of the Drcimateer's prayer to St. Genesius, their patron. As the school expanded, so did the club. It grew from its original 10 founders to its present 50 members. Some of its past productions are: Antic Spring, Jean Val Jean, and Pride and Prejudice. Annual trips of the club include tours through Max Factor and the CBS- TV studio. Once every year we spend an enjoyable eve- ning at the Ballet and the Opera. This is a fine organ- ization for developing good Christians as well as actors. Brotherhood Essay Contest N. Sheehey _ FROSH DAMC Seniors welcome Frosh Boy! Expert coaching and hard work result- ed in the first league championship in St. Mo.'s history and a chance at the C.I.F. crown which was blown by losing to Mater Dei, the only team to defeat the Mariners this season. With such a coach as George Melinkovich and the material, our gridiron prospects look just as bright in the future. 86 Varsity: Hemenez, Fernandez, Marquez, Downey, Jessick, Charbonneau.
