DEDICATED TO OUR PASTOR Monsignor O Flaherty, who in less than a year has won the devotion, respect and the loyalty of the students of Saint Monica's High School, we dedicate our Compass. May it show, in a small way, our deepest appreciation for your generous consideration of our needs. Your spiritual guidance has been an inspiration to each of us, and we hope you find our annual a fitting tribute. 2 MONSIGNOR O'FLAHERTY OUR FACULTY BROTHER MATTHEW BROTHER DANIEL BROTHER OTTERAN m s. °c bon a li me£ 'n COACH T I SISTERS OF THE HOLY NAMES OF JESUS AND MARY Sister Aloysia Mary Sister M. We ll sing to you always, On and on through all the years. For all at Saint Monica's h 00 WITHIN THESE WALLS we prayed together as Catho- lics, we learned together as stu- dents, and we played together as Mariners. The walls of St. Monica's High School have become as familiar as cotton candy at a world fair. Day in and day out we have en- tered the doors of the school and spent a few happy hours within the walls we have grown to love. Whether it was listening to Father tell of the Holy Ghost, grabbing a quick bite in the cafeteria, playing basketball during gym, singing a hymn at Mass, or chatting to our locker partner about a future dance, it was all done within these familiar walls. From the early days of our freshman year, we became one of the family — a family that boasts sons and daughters in every part of the globe. But whether they be far or near, they will never forget what went on within these walls. 9 WE STUDIED . . . . in general math yiv WE PLAYED in the auditorium WE PRAYED . . . 12 •v tfl So y Becnel president Jim Mack President res'dent CLASS OFFICERS: S. Pavetti, C. Glanville, S. Kenny, L. Ryberg, T. Havel, J. Delp, R. Fenner, J. Miehls. Missing—S. Bednard. v CLASS OF '55 IT S ALL OVER BUT THE MEMORY . . . this last year, our be'st, is gone. The Mass of the Holy Ghost, our retreat, the Senior Play, the Anniversary Ball, Green and Gold Day, the Prom, the Christmas Play, and the games, have all been our last . . . The Alma Mater will only be a faint tune, seldom to be heard again . . . Many of the faces we've grown to know and love will be seen only on the pages of this book . . . We are thankful for the knowledge gained in these familiar classrooms; for the guidance and inspiration of the priests; and for the fun we've had with our friends . . It's all over now, but the following pages will serve as a remembrance of our accomplishments . . . memories . . . and ambitions. 4 JOHN ACKER . . . football manager 4, basketball manager 4 . . . being thrown in the shower after the Harvard game . . . join the Army. CLASS OF '56 On September 7, 1954, we, the junior class, 150 strong, our hearts filled with hope, and spirits high, began to blaze the trail to leadership. We remember the picnic at Griffith Park, the junior movie The Broken Arrow followed by our record dance Indian Summer, the raffle spon- sored for the purpose of obtaining Bee team warm-up jackets, the excitement over order- ing our senior rings, and the prom Prelude in Pastel . We surely hope that it was a pleasant memory for the seniors. We extend our sincere thanks to our moderators. Sister John Marie, Sister M. Louise Christine and Brother Evaristus, for their help and patience in guiding us through our junior year. As this page in our book of memories draws to a close, we wish to offer to the seniors, whose shoes we must fill, our congratulations and best wishes. You have given us much to strive for in following your example in leadership, sportsmanship and’accomplishment. Our junior year! It lived up to our highest expectations, marking a growth in unity, accomplish- ment and spirit. 34 First row: B. Dibb, R. Garcia, L. Powers, G. Junger, D. Doer- flinger, L. CLASS OF ’58 Never to be forgotten . . . yes, our freshmen year at Saint Monica's will remain a vivid mem- ory . . . Initiation with the ridiculous get ups, the high and mighty seniors, judgment in the aud- itorium and ice cream and gifts in the cafeteria . . . the Welcome Dance, first dance of the school year, given by the seniors to make us feel at home . . . Hi-Jinx gave us our first chance to show the school what we could do. Our theme was the season of Fall, and we carried it out in Indian Summer . . . Green and Gold Day was next on our calendar, bringing with it the new experience of working, boys and girls together . . . Closing a wonderful and eventful year was Eighth Grade Day which we gave to show to our successors, the eighth grade, a glimpse of high school life ... This school year of '54-'55 has seen a reorganization in the structure of the Boys' Sodality of Mary. The smaller group meetings resulting from the reorganization of the So- dality, it is to be hoped, will better aid the Sodalists in attaining the ob- jectives of the Sodality. Under the able assistance of Brother Cornelius, we are confident of witnessing ever- increasing fruits from the projects and activities of sodalists at St. Monica's. The Sodality offers a variety of ac- tivities to the diligent-minded stu- dent. This year, a small delegation from St. Monica's attended the an- nual Union Sodality Forum at Mount Carmel High School. For the social minded Sodalist, recreation is of- fered at the annual Sodality Ball. All students must keep in mind that the Sodality is not a school club, but an organization dedicated to the Blessed Virgin for the spiritual ad- vancement of its members. The purpose of the SSO is to instill, through its various committees, the spirit of Catholic Action in all those with whom it comes in contact. Each month brings with it an array of activities which branch out into dif- ferent phases of Catholic Action. October begins the year with the traditional Mother Marie Rose play. In December, Our Lady's Committee prepares the Immaculate Conception play. During December, each com- mittee finds a part to play in bring- ing joy to those in need. February brings the Los Gatos ceremony. Dur- ing the month of March, activities center around vocations in life, the most important activity being the Vocation Play. In May, as a tribute to Mary, the Sodalists march in pro- cession carrying her banner as their pledge of love and loyalty. The motto of the SSO, To Jesus through Mary , will always be alive in the heart of a true Sodalist. 49 A ii--vi Jacqueline Sheehey President Marlene Delivuk Gerri Walters Vice-President Minute Secretary Joyce Sanchez Margi Schiesl Point Secretary Treasurer GAA BOARD . . . The GAA is like a brilliant torch kindling in each member a love of good sportmanship and fair play. This year the torch was lit with the enthusiasm of the membership drive. The flame burned brilliantly through the sports' year, especially during the struggle for the volleyball championship, the Homecoming Dance, and Hi-Jinx when the Seniors and Sophomores battled for the basketball banner. The flame leaped higher at the swim meet, and the final elections, and glowed even more brightly at that memorable final ban- quet. From this brilliant torch of the GAA, we hope that each member has caught the spark of good sportsmanship and fair play. Let this spark light your way up the steep road of life, glowing with memories of the wonderful spirit of the GAA. DRAMATEERS The Dramateers, the only co-educational club at St. Monica's, started the year by dedi- cating the tragic and comic masks in a tableau to Our Lady during her Marian Year. This was symbolic of the joyous as well as the sorrowful events that would transpire dur- ing the year 1954-55. Their first play, Jean Valjean was presented at the Annual Arch- diocesan Drama Festival in December. After accepting thirty apprentices, the club started rehearsals on the three act play, “Take Care of My Little Girl, which was presented in April. Members gave skits to promote student body dances, were guests at Max Factor's, and directed dramatic productions for other groups within the student body. Under their patron, St. Genesius, they tried to live up to their prayer, ”... help us to bring Christ to others through the theater . . . until at last we are cast by the greatest Director in the most beautiful role we will ever play. m -r e0io efi ° ’Ce'coro' GlooV.««- And,eo ,otVi we . prcS,d , 00000 . vice P'es,de Stefan First row: F.
