V sow. 4' AV ,,A , V 1 l F INTRGDUCTICN This book is the memory of a year, one of four significant yea1's, in which we put away the things of childhood and arm ourselves for the journey that men must make. ln these years we are confronted with the truth, so that the phan- tasies and confusions of youth quiet before it, and we become men and women ready for life. Our essential confrontation with truth is with the truth of the meaning of life. Cod made us so that He can be good to us, so that we can first of all become like Him, good to others. If we truly give ourselves in love to others, He will share with us His eternal estate, His own happiness. All other results would be failure fe- all other beauties and renowns won at the expense of grace and love, at the price of converting Infinite Goodness to another lnfinite, Justice. We learn this at Saint lVIichael's, and we set our feet to it seasonably, beautifully, ur- gently, in the gracious symbol of the liturgy - the motif of this book - as it unfolds sin and redemption, death and resurrection, sanctity and fulfillment in the Triune Life of God. . , Y 4 li W sig Gul-0 I959 MICHAELI I Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Q 5? The sole objec- tive of this organization is thc welfare of the school and the upholding of the prestige which it has acquired through the years. The council is composed of representatives from every classroom and organization in the school. Thus, everyone has a voice in matters concerning student life in the school, The organi- zation is divided into committees which concern themselves with the various phases of school lille. The results have been a deep-rooted cooperation and great bonds of respect hetween schoolmates and their leaders. The curriculum of the school has been the beneficiary as well. Home and School Association The Home and School Association stands high in the life of St. Michaells. lt has contributed much time and effort towards maintaining good relations hetween school and the home. At the monthly meetings many prohlems of parent-chil- dren relations are discussed, speakers give expert advice on pertinent subjects, and many difficulties are ironed out. The Association not only aids the school in this way: it also helps it financially. Its gener- osity has heen instrumental in providng the school with new flooring. new sewing machines, and new desks. This year the Association celebrated its Fifth Anniversary. A gala dinner was held on the eve- ning: of January ll, at which the Very Reverend Monsignor john B. Nlcllowell was the principal speaker. Duquesne University's famous Tambur- itzans provided the entertainment. Q iw Top: Mr. C. Schultz, Kev. Edward llennessey, UP., Mr. IN Maznr, Senlerl: Mrs. M. Cargottu, Mr. lf. Although Ring Day began with the same procedure we followed every Friday morning, after Holy Mass a considerable change took place. For the first time we would accept the leadership of the school by accepting her ring. We Open The Q Year With Christ WJ In a very beautiful ceremony we received our class ring which is a sign of unity and eternity. The ring in itself is not a sign of power, but it is an everlasting reminder that we are members of the 'Class of 759 pledged to the best for ourselves, for our school, and for our God. The age-old but ever new Christmas story was dra- matized this year for the first time by the sophomores and freshmen. As the magnificent pageantry of the an- nouncement to Zachary, to Mary, and to the angels un- folded. the choir, elevated to form a veritable living Christmas tree. sang all the beloved Christmas melodies. The grandeur of the performance owed everything to the very capable direction of Sister Regina Mary and the expert craftsmanship of Mr. Leo Kanzleiter and his able stage crew. The story of the Cantata was taken from The Prince of Peacefv a Christmas play written hy Father Benjamin WiI'tZ, CP. Piano accompanists were Robert Kopas, Helen Crus, and Marie Louise Stephan. May is the awakening: it brings the blossoms that are necessary before the fruition. Like spring, Mary appeared first to give us through the power of the Holy Spirit the fullness of the summer of our spiritual life, the lncarnate Son, Jesus Christ, Who in His omnipotent love created the Mystical Body for our salvation. Without Maryis answer of 6'Yes we would not have had Christg without Christ we would not have been redeemed. So it was that Mary was the instrument of our Redemption, and in thanksgiving the Mystical Body crowns her Queen of its members. Mary is the queen of May. She is the queen of men. Thanksgiving came and went, and with it the Nbeginning of the basketball season. Our team was the best Saint 1V1ike's had had for a number of years. Excitement ran high, and the student body turned out for game after game. With December, the Advent Season began. During this Holy Season the Glee Club spread Christmas cheer with traditional carols. They sang for smiling Christmas shoppers at Mellon Square, and entertained the dear old ladies at the St. ,lo- sephis Home. We felt a warm and happy feeling inside because we knew we had made the holiday season brighter for others. Remember how snowy and white the lobby looked the night of the Winter Formal! The Stu- dent Council transformed the room into the wintry atmosphere of a moonlit sleighride. This was the last Winter Formal of our school days at St. Michael's. Maybe we had this in back of our minds as we danced in the wonderland, and maybe that was why we all agreed it was the nicest formal we had attended. These were happy months filled with the fun, laughter, and work that happens only to seniors.
