Mr. O'DonnelI is second to none in directing our musical activities, and when it comes to training boys of high school age he is far ahead of most directors. For Christmas we had a magnificent cantata with tableau that put Us in the mood to keep Christ in Christmas. We celebrated Saint Patrick's Day, too, with all the traditional Irish songs. And now the heart-lifting music of OKLAHOMA, this year's operetta, is tickling our ears and stirring our feet. ln addition to the cantata and operetta, there is also the annual concert and demonstration Mass at Seton Hall in honor of the Archbishop. We benefit by this activity, because we repeat the sacred music at our graduation exercises. But the operetta is the big event that brings all the old grads back, and the Glee Club is the golden chain that binds our graduates to the school. Ile - .v 7. But when the storm clouds of the football season had faded away, CATHOLIC STATE CHAMPIONS was printed on the iackets of the Irish gridders. Their captain, Iron Mike Siano, was on the county, state Catholic, and Metropolitan all-star teams. Standouts on the team were Zombie Ban- savage IAII-Countyl, Dom Prevete Chonorable mention for All-Countyl, Lou Cordileone, Bob Scarrone, John Koenig, William Tighe, and Paul Shelton fco-captainl. Other seniors who made contributions toward a success- ful season were Bill Jackson, Vinnie Ascolese, and Willie Casalino. In fact, team effort was the most important factor of our successful season. ST. MICHAEL'S 26 - UNION HILL 6 We opened the season with our traditional rivals, a strong and well-seasoned team favored by fans and local papers to take the Irish. Meanwhile our boys, getting in shape for the game, had no time to read papers or listen to armchair quarterbacks. As a result, from the opening play to the final whistle it was the Irish all the way. ST. MICHAEL'S 6 - DEMAREST 7 Demarest invaded our home grounds with high hopes of victory, and went home with a hard fought 7-6 decision. We made mistakes and Demarest was good enough to take advantage of them. Later, we corrected those mistakes, and the team that doesn't make the same mistakes twice is a dangerous team to play. ST. MICHAEL'S 24 - EMERSON 6 A player always has a special game during the season that he would like to win most of all. Emerson was just that team for Iron Mike Siano. Revenge is sweet! Mike galloped across the goal line three times to lead the Irish to the city championship. ST. MICHAEL'S 'I3 - MT. ST. MICHAEL'S I2 Once again we were to play the role of underdog. One paper wrote, The Irish are biting off more than they can handle. Well, the Irish were biting all right, but they were biting into the fruits of victory. A fired-up team led by Siano and Anderson came from behind with a do-or-die spirit to pull a great upset. THE TEAM From left to right, front row-William Casalino, Dominick Prevete, William Jackson, Albert Bansavage, John Koenig, Michael Siano, Paul Shelton, George Hogan, Robert Scarrone, Vincent Ascolese, William Tigheg second row-Coach Sam Monaco, Arthur Smith, Robert Straut, Victor Mancini, Joseph Maresca, Ralph Ferraro, Louis Cordileone, Donald Graham, Donald Scornavacca, William Henderson, Richard O'Connor, Paul Sunsavere, Edward Stogowski, Assistant Coach Manny Monaco: third row-Assistant Coach Andy Lukac, Francis Anderson, Robert Ruthman, Edward Henning, Kenneth McNeil, Paul Lavelle, Robert Goode, Fred Constantino, James Ramsey, Maurice Sloyan, John Bean, Richard Lundy, Assistant Coach John Gondolfo. ST. MICHAEL'S 6 - MEMORIAL 25 12,000 football fans jammed Roosevelt Stadium with one question on their minds, Can the Irish beat Memorial, the great football machine of New Jersey? The Tigers drew first blood by scoring two quick touchdowns. Then the Irish dug in deeper to stop the touchdown-hungry Tigers from scoring any more in the first half. With the score I2-O the Irish went on the offensive in the third quarter when Siano electrified the crowd with a 75 yard touchdown run. But the Tigers would yield no more. They quickly scored two more touchdowns to send the Irish home beaten. ST. MICHAEL'S 26 - DICKINSON 0 The hapless hill-toppers had drawn a bad day to take on the Michaelians who were still feeling the sting of the Memorial defeat and needed to win back their pride. The feel of victory came fast to the Irish as they rolled the first half score up to 26-0. The second half was a vacation for the Irish, while Dickinson fought hard to break up the shut- out. ST. MICHAEL'S I9 - ST. CECILIA'S 'I3 The Irish were coming down the home stretch, boasting a 4-2 record, to meet St. Cecilia's with an unblemished record of 7-0. That bright Sunday afternoon the Irish gave a bril- liant exhibition of running, passing, and tackling' to fight off a desperation attack by St. Cecilia's. As a result of this impressive victory the Irish received the Catholic State Championship. ST. MICHAEL'S - ST. .IOSEPH'S Because of weather conditions this game could not be played, and it was too late in the season to be postponed. XCV47 5 MX-. Look at the stars who are returning from last years team which won seven of its ten games moving from the league cellar to tie for a third place At first base will be Louie Cordileone North Hudson Batting Champ last year with a 444 average and a tremendous long ball hitter At short will be Co Captain Ed Stogowski who besides being a 300 hitter is a fine fielder Dom Prevete a wizard glove man covers third Richie 110 Spiekermann covers centerfield like Willie Mays Duke Snider or Mickey Mantle take your pick The pitching staff is headed by Co Captain Steve Per emes Louis Cordileone Vinnie Quagliana Frank Second base left vacant by the graduation of Billy Brooks should be capably filled by either Kenny Powers or Rob Savasta both of whom look good ln pre season practice The returning stars will be hard pressed to retain their 'obs by the strong bench which Mr Green will have at his disposal They will further endeavor to impress the coaches who believe that we can win the County Championship going away because on May seventh the team goes to play Army Plebes at West Point New York - - I - I Q I G . - . Here we are at Roosevelt Stadium for the annual Dom Bosco Track and Field Meeting, and the happy looking gentleman standing between us whose broad smile can't be hidden by his king size sombrero is Dom Alagia, Saint Michael's track coach. Hi, Dom. How are things looking this year? Hello, Steve. Hi, Jackie. Things look very good. Mike Siano, my assistant coach, and I are looking forward to a very successful season, what with more than half of last year's team returning and I may have a few future Bob Mathias' among the freshmen. Whom do you expect to be your top point garners this year? Well, I'm counting most on lettermen like Lou Cordileone, who can throw the shot put farther than some guys in the major leagues can throw a baseball, and Paul Sansevere, who is good for a 4:35-4:45 mile every time out. How about the sprints? This is one of my strong events with Billy Tighe, Ken McNeil, and Dom Prevete coming back from last year, and some very fine freshman prospects. You were supposedly hard hit by the graduation of your top milers, half milers, and quarter milers, Will their replacements be able to take over? Definitely, Sansevere, Scott, and Kennedy will leave their opposition about a mile back. Frank Anderson and Richie Quinton will show their heels to the opposing halt milers, Paul Chiarello and Henry Sippel are my top quarter milers. On the basis of last year's performance, what do you expect to be your best event? The high iump. I have Bansavage, Straut, and Coe, all of whom are potential six feet plus jumpers. What about the other events? WeIl, Paul Shelton is capable of throwing the discus out of the stadium, and Tom McGauley soars into the wide blue yonder on the pole vault. Lanky Dolan steps over the low hurdles ahead of the field, and Jerry Villa takes care of the broad jump. Excuse me, fellows, the meet is starting and I have to give instructions to the guys. So long, Dom, and we'll bet our last pair of spikes that you're not the only one who thinks that Saint MichaeI's will have a very successful track season. Within a generation or two these immigrants become the citizens of our middle classes. And, accord- ing to Aristotle: The best political community is formed by citizens of the middle class. Those States are likely to be well administered in which the middle class is large, and larger if possible than both the other classes, or at any rate than either singly, for the addition of the middle class turns the scale and prevents either of the extremes from being dominant. pafmnd anal .xdoluerfberd S40 00 Mr 81 Mrs W .J Decker Rnhard Carol 55 525 00 A Frlend 3 F rnends Sophomores Room 9 S10 00 Anonymous Seniors Seniors benlors Semors Junlors .Junlors Junlors Juniors Room Room Room Room Room Room Room Room onorary afrona MOST REVEREND THOMAS A BOLAND S T D J C D RIGHT REVERFND MONSIGNOR WILLIAM F LAWLOR LL D VERY REVEREN D ERNEST WELSH C P VERY REVEREND CAROL RING C P VERY REVEREND CANISIUS HAZLETT C P VERY REVEREND BERCHMANS LANAGAN C P VERY REVEREND HUBERT ARLISS C P REVEREND STEPHEN PAUL KENNY REVEREND MICHAEL RAUSCH C P REVEREND WENDELIN MOORE C P REVEREND PATRICK JOSEPH MALDWYER REVEREND CHARLES OAKES C P REVEREND JOHN BAPTIST PESCE C P .lunlors Room Sophomores Room Sophomores Room Sophomores Room Sophomores Room Freshmen Room Freshmen Room Freshmen Room Freshmen Room Freshmen Room Freshmen Room 35 00 McDermut s Mr 81 Mrs Joseph Alessl 81 Famlly Ann Marle 81 Arthur Mr 81 Mrs Frank Aragona Mrs Nlcholas Bablch Andrew Banks Ruth Banks Mr 81 Mrs J H Baptls Mrs John Barrett MISS Nancy Baslle Bull s Luncheonette 81 Statlonery Mrs Patrxcla Blom Mr 81 Mrs Frank Branda Barbara Ann Brennan Gary Brennan Edward Breslm PX-ITHIJNS M1 8 Mrs Peter Breslin Mr 8 Mrs J Brzozowskl M1 81 Mrs Anthony Capermo lony Clperlno le sle Caporrlno H nrry Thomas Carr M1 8.
