The classrooms are completely modern and the executive offices well-equipped. Our gym is prob- ably the finest in the county, and, in our new cafe- teria, we can have either a hot meal or sandwiches. We have no pictures showing the laboratories, library, or chapel, because these rooms are still being furnished. When the chapel is completed, we'll have the Blessed Sacrament with us all the time. THE STAIRCASE, with right and left bound traffic. Dottie Kriessler and Irene Bogacz are probably coming from French George Pfanner is iust meandering, and that pur- poseful cntnzen going the other way is James Caliguire. THE CORRIDOR and some dilly dallymg, shilly-shallying seniors. Carmelita Hernandez has parked her ink on the floor for the duration of Margaret Barnett's story. Donald O Rourke is looking askance at such goings-on. And Helen Toohey, Rosemary Yandola, and Noreen Kammerer are lust enloylng life. 8 T .ON RX I i THE AUDITORIUM IN PROCESS OF BECOMING A GYM, and Father's Boys doing the processing. Left to right are Ferry, Scrufori, Grisoni, Kellenberger, Lynch Cplaying foremanll, Rivelli, Goba, Weber, and Murphy. A SECTION OF THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE, and Cathy Kellen- berger nicely filling the section! She's accomplishing a two-fold task-taking dictation, and lending interest to the new venetian blinds and glossy furniture. 9 RECEPTION AND BOARD ROOMS, with Pat Hopkins coming from Father Pat's office, and Pat Ennis at the files. ANTHONY KNEGO, School Secretary Make that explanation good, Mr. Watson! Mrs. Knego takes Wally Watson to task for being late. Bob Kellenberger doesn't seem too frightened, though his turn is coming. And Carol Wickham, with nothing to worry about, is doing the worrying for the two boys. MR. WILLIAM TOMSICK, Plant Engineer Engineer is his title, but Bill Tomsick can do any- think. He won't like, however, our cropping out the monster furnace he's examining. It's a complicated beauty that dwarfs everything about it, including the man who understands it so thoroughly. AND MAINTENANCE MRS. RICHARD BARRY, Cashier We're down in the cafeteria, now, buying lunch tickets from Mrs. Barry, whose smile always makes us feel that she's glad to see us. The pencil, by the way, really isn't part of her usual hairdo! AT THE LUNCH COUNTER Look at Mrs. Metzler, Mrs. McGauley, Mrs. Cough- lin, and Mrs. Callaghan, and you'll see four reasons why our cafeteria is o success. What's for lunch, do you ask? Why, soup and turkey, and don't you doubt us! FREEDCDM OF 4' ,-,oo A SPEECH Cur Seniors Now gather all our Saxon bards-let harps and hearts be strung, To celebrate the triumphs of our own good Saxon tongue! For stronger tar than hosts that march with battle Hogs unfurled, It goes with freedom, thought, and truth to rouse and rule the world. -James Gilborne Lyons JIQQWBACLASS OFFICERS 'I PRESIDENT . There's no wonder that Bob was elected class president. With his good looks, winning smile, and pleasant ways, he couldn't miss. Besides being a good student, he is interested in sports and in all that concerns the school. SECRETARY Kathleen is the comedienne of the school. Be- sides, she can entertain with the Charleston, and, as a maiorette, she is one of the snappiest strutters on the squad. ,I ROBERT CBOBJ TAGLIABUE Saint Anne's, Jersey City Basketball 2,3,4p Glee Club 'l,2,3,4g Mission Unit l,2,3,4p Science Club 2,35 Track 2,3,4 THOMAS KCALJ CALLAMARI Our Lady of Grace, Hoboken Football 2,3,4p Glee Club 2,3,4, Mission Unit i,2,3,4, Track l,2,3,4 KATHLEEN CSICKLEJ VAN SICKLE Saint MichaeI's, Union City Glee Club 2,3,4p Maiorettes 'I,2,3,4p Science Club 2,31 Mission Unit 'l,2,3,4 I . Roberf Barreff Browning OUR GREATEST SEASON X, fQwC lx! THEY WENT OFF TO CAMP THE SADDEST LOOKING THE BIG FOUR GROUP YOU EVER SAW' Coaches Alagia, Monaco, Lukac, Parillo We, too, born to freedom, are willing to fight to maintain freedom. When the new coach, Sam Monaco, welcomed us, his main problems were getting acquainted and fill- ing the gaps left by last year's seniors. This, and more, was accomplished at camp. All the boys will remember those eight days of hiking, swimming, and boating-hiking to the field, swimming while washing in the lake, and boating to a phone call home! Very few had a good time, but all realized later its value. OPENING GAME, ONLY DEFEAT 20 - 7 The team iourneyed to Baltimore for the first game. Because of lack of information and difference in rules, we met a stronger team than expected. Saint Mike's started fast, but soon lost spark. Saint Joe's out- played us the first half and led 'I3-0. But the sec- ond half was different, especially the last quarter in which Callamari scored our only touchdown. -Franklin Delano Roosevelt BIGGEST SCORE IN HISTORY 39 - 6 Union Hill met a reiuvenated Saint Mike's and was backtracking the whole game. The first period was highlighted by three quick scores: and, after coasting through the second period, the half time score was 21-0. In the second half, Saint Mike's substituted freely, and a last quarter burst of three touchdowns set the record. The night was highlighted by line play and three scores by Captain Denny McGill. HOBOKEN PUSHED INTO THE RIVER 25 - 6 The Irish found little trouble with Demarest and continued its high scoring. Again it was Saint Mike's ground gaining that wore out the Red Wings. High- lighting the game was the county's smallest fullback, Gerard Farley, with his first period score and con- stant ground gaining, also, the fine defensive play by Tom Kennedy and other Hobokenites. BULL DOGS NOW LITTLE LAMBS 31 - I4 Emerson's big and powerful team, rated as one of the best for championship honors, felt the sting of the Monaco men. Saint Mike's completely outplayed Em- erson's giant line, and steamrolled to its third con- secutive victory. The Irish line led by Bill Zuhowski opened big holes for Saint Mike's backs, who took advantage and crossed pay dirt five times. Scoring was led by McGill, Farley, and Callamari. MICHAEL'S STARTS A REAL ATTACK 26 - 6 The Irish iourneyed to Rutherford and came home happy. Saint Mike's started slowly, and Saint Mary's took advantage. There were two quick scores, and at the half the Irish led by a mere point, 7-6. Monaco gave the boys a tongue lashing, and in the second half line play was led by Jackie Moore and high- lighted by the first touchdown via the air. This was a thirty-five yard pass to Richard O'Brien, who ran the last thirty yards to pay dirt. Two more quick scores, and the game was over. LODI TROUBLES MICHAELIANS I2 - 7 In this game, Saint Mike's outplayed Lodi in every department. The Irish pushed to the goal every time they had the ball, but stalled at this point. The three hundred twenty-one yards gained indicated at least five touchdowns. And here Saint Mike's proved that they could come from behind and win. SAINT MICHAEL'S 25 - OFFICIALS 21 This game was the best and most thrilling of the season. Saint Mike's took a fast lead, and atlthe half the score was I8-7. Ferris came back in the last half and scored twice in a row to take the lead 21-'I8. The teams see-sawed back and forth. But the fine play by Callamari and Chuck Thomas counted. Mc- Nally, fading back, let go a screen pass to Calla- mari, who got away after Thomas key-blocked and romped eighty-nine yards for his second touchdown. This lead the Irish held to the final gun. MlCHAEL'S OVERCOMES FIFTEEN YEAR JINX 20 - 0 Finally, after fifteen years of taking beatings from Saint CeciIia's, the Irish paid them back. Defense was highlighted by O'Connor, Moore, and McCloskey. Pfanner's ground gaining and touchdown proved to be a great asset, and he was aided by Callamari and McGill. BRILLIANT FINALE 20 - 0 The Irish seniors brought to a close a great sea- son in the game with Saint .loe's. The Monaco men ran over the undermanned Blue Jays to become the best offensive team in the county. This was victory number eight, the most wins in one season by a Michaelian team. Thus closed a great season. Jarvis, Coach Patrick Finnegan. WINTER CAMPAIGN The basketball team began the T953 season under pressure. T952 had brought Saint Mike's greatest year in sports, with its best basketball and football teams in the school history. The basketball team had been North Hudson and Metropolitan Catholic Champs. So, the boys were expected to live up to the standard thus created. But this was impossible, for even a learned man looks inferior beside a genius, and that was the exact situation. With the loss of All-American Tom Heinsohn and the terrific playing of Mike Rubinaccio, Coach Finne- gan set out to fill in gaps. Jarvis, Tagliabue, and Luber filled three of five, but the last two were un- decided, and throughout the season different names appeared as starters. Alternately at these positions were Zuhowski, Lenahan, McGill, Weber, Dente, Villa, Kennedy, and Goba. Because of lack of height and hot and cold nights, the Irish lost a few heartbreak- ers. Jarvis was Saint Mike's leading scorer, Luber made his push shot famous and Tagliabue showed his height under the boards. Saint Mike's, being out of contention for any title, became the spoiler and knocked off a few contend- ers. The team went to the state and metropolitan tournaments, and reached the quarter finals in both, but lost in the closest games of the season. In the state meet, the Irish met a taller Seton Hall team, and the game was nip and tuck until a field goal and foul with one second left spelled defeat. It was the same in the metropolitan tournament, against Chaminade of Long Island, when the team sunk a foul with two tenths of a second left, and lost 56-55. To summarize the season: Sain MichaeI's had too much to live up to, but the team represented us honorably and the season was, therefore, a good one. Although they made no spectacular victories, neither were there any bad defeats. Moreover, the girls always displayed good spirit and did their best. Special credit has to be given to Two-Point Garri- son and Helen Olsen, good guards who switched to forward in times of need, and to the high scorers, Cathy Vayianos and Marty Warnicke. Nov. Dec.
