Here in Union City, they are our cradle-to-grave friends. Passion- ists have baptized generatiohs of our families, blessed their marriages, and tolled their requiems. And Saint Mich- ael's belongs not only to Union City, but to all the cities and towns hereabouts. For: the monastery towers are a beauty in the landscape, the church is a place of pilgrimage, and the Fathers ,are a resort in time of trouble. ' 4 a We Michaelcians are very much the children of our times and of our neigh- borhood. We are heirs to all the lovely traditions of grace and service linked with the monasteryg and, like-1 our parents before us, we know and love the Pas- sionists. Nowwthat they are celebrating the hundredth anniversary of ,their Ameri- can foundation, we rejoice withythem and proudly dedicate to them our 1952 Michaelian Footprints. X 7 .fl t all - A ll TT, CP. CANISXUS HAZLE Saint Paul of the Cross founded the Congregation of the Passion in Italy, in 1770' but it was - , not until 1852 that Passion- ist missionaries came to the United States. These were five holy Italian priests, the seed for a rich and prolific growth that w sturdy even in its be i ' as g nnings. In the first twenty years, they had established five housesg and there are no ' ' tw i . . w in the United States enty one Passionist monasteries, which have again branched out into South America, Mexico, China, Germany, and Canada. For three years, we have had the whole-hearted und ' erstanding and generous support of Father Patrick, H h W erred, and praised e as counselled us h en we doubted, corrected us when we us when a little praise was either due or needed. And the question was - what is she like? As we learned to know Sister, we began to recognize her high standards, and we saw with admiration that she took no ordinary pains to exact those standards from us. We have been fortunate in our most important High School year. Thank you, Sister! if-Q ky The Secretary's ofhce is one of the rea- sons for the smooth organization of our school. These smiles are quite typical, familiar to all of us. Meet Cleft to rightj Mrs, Anthony Knego, our School Secretaryg and Kathryn johnson and Lamberta Remmig, her part- time student helpers. Mrs. Julius Naudin mothers all of us, both faculty and students. Here you see her at one of her charges, the cafeteria. But you are also apt to find her swinging a broom in one of the classrooms, or in- specting the candelabra up at the monas- tery church. Nothing of interest to Saint Michaels is beneath the diligence or be- yond the devotion of this lovely lady. WH' ,A 'JEYKI If X-4 MR. P. A. IQYCE Sjmnivli MR. Here in Saint Michaels, it is singularly true that each class has its own marked characteristics. If honors be the gauge, then the present juniors take the palm for scholarship, for they have more honor students among them than have any of the other if 5 groups. This doesn't mean that they are laggards in sports or other activities, but simply that their chief merit is their interest in their studies. For this, we Seniors are happy. Could we choose, we wouldn't have it otherwise. We leave them our places, hoping they will fill them better than we. Good luck to them, and God bless them! ROOM 9: Row l . . . M. Hansen, N. They saunter easily all over the High School and its environs, and know exactly when their fun ceases to be good and begins to smack of offence. They have not the flair for scholarship that dis- tinguishes the Juniors, but, as a class, they outshine the juniors in sports. For, in each of the four Sopho- zffb' more groups, there are several really excellent athletes, both boys and girls. And, since their High School days are not yet half over, they promise Saint Michael's for at least another two years the thrill of victory - victory on gridiron, track, court, and field. Weare proud of them, and want you and them and everyone else to know of our pride. Still new to our school, they have already proven themselves to be the most activity-minded group Michaelians have seen in many years. Whether the activity be a play, a debate, rooting for sports, gathering clothes for the Koreans, collecting Christmas presents for the less fortunate, or just joining whatever clubs are open to them, the Freshmen are one hundred percent, and so prompt that it is a joy to deal with them. We are glad to see such enthusiasm at the foot of our ranks, glad that Saint Michaels will taste it for another three years. We can do with you, Freshmen. Welcome! 1 P' 'ii' I 7'-1 4 , - L., XX Y LA. For the most part, the boys were still small and inexperienced, but, what they lacked in size and know-how, they made up for in determination. The coaches built the team around a nucleus of retumirig vereransland, when the time came for the first game, they-were ready .to field a comparatively light but fast team. At the endlof the season, they had won no great honors. But they were highly successful, nevertheless. For, in spite of the handicap of mounting injuries thatdogged them from the start, they played the finest football we've.had in years, and they showed the qualities Patrick wants in his teams. William Murphy was hoiffegias outstanding player, and the team knew it could not havifrdiitnsed with the tireless service of senior manager Richard Burns. Under the direction of their excellent coach, Pat Finnegan, the team won the City Champ- ionship, the North Hudson Championship, the Metro- politan All-Catholic Championship, and third place honors in the Eastern States Catholic Invitational Tour- nament. One of the glories of the team was Tommy Hein- sohn, the most prolific scorer the school has ever pro- duced. Tommy, with the help of Hank DeVira and Jim Jarvis under the boards, and Mike Rubbinaccio and Petey Dente down court, amazed the experts by beating not once, but twice, our highly touted and most bitter rival, Emerson. The team also raised eye- brows by unexpectedly beating the then league lead- ers, the Demarest Red Wings, in a thrilling nip and tuck contest. The team's high point in the scoring column was the 83 points registered against Holy Family. This was also the highest output of any team wearing the green and white uniform. . Patrick, Richard Burns Cmanagerl, William Zuhowski Thomas Heinsohn, james De Vira, Robert Tagliabue Coach Patrick Finnegan. After losing to a powerful Saint Peter's team in the county and state sectional finals, the team went on to amaze the New York basketball world by winning in spectacular fashion the Metropolitan Catholic Invi- tation Tournament - defeating Rice, Stepinac, St. john's Prep, and the Catholic High School champions of Brooklyn, Holy Trinity, in that order. With our showing in this tournament adding great- ly to our prestige, the team received a bid to compete in the Fifteenth Annual Eastern States Catholic Invi- tational Tournament. Advancing to the semi-hnals after defeating Saint Thomas Aquinas in the opening round of play, the boys were upset by a righting All Hallows Squad. Forgetting this defeat, we proved our versatility by coming back in the consolation round and soundly trouncing the Massachusetts State Cham- pion, Central Catholic, and copping third place honors. To summarize the season, it was wonderful work on the part of the coach and excellent cooperation on the part of the team, along with the whole student body who had participated in the teams success by really showing just what school spirit is. Early in the March of '51, Coach Dom Alagia called a meeting of the track team, and pointed out the importance of pre-season conditioning if we wished to get a head start on out rivals. For the next month, practice sessions were held in the school basement. Although these cramped quarters didnt permit much running, there was ample room for calisthenics and various jogging exercises, all of which proved their worth later on. When the warm weather rolled around, practice was held outdoors. It was then pos- sible for the coach to concentrate on the individual running A I and Held events, for, because of the indoor practice sessions, the team was in good condition. y In their first meeting with the Blue Bishops from Holy Family, the Irish completely dominated both the running and held events, and outscored them 44-19. A week later, they met Emerson. It was a hotly con- tested meet, but Saint Michaels showed over-all supremacy by defeating our Eighteenth Street rivals for the first time since the sport was again inaugurated into the athletic pro- gram of the school. The point score was 451 Q to 2615. The only loss Saint Michaels suffered in North Hud- son came from Mtmorial. The lrish met the XY'est New York Tigers on an otl' day. Both teams were about equal in the running events, but the poor performance our team gave in the field events was the main cause for a 60 to 40 defeat. After the regular season ended, Saint Michaels entered many championship meets. Even though they weren't in the running for the team titles, many of the boys gave out- standing performances. Bernie Giacolone set new shot-put records at the Memorial Day and State Catholic meets, half- miler Gerry Farley placed in both the County and State Catholic meets, Dinny McGill was North Hudson hundred yard sprint champ, and Hudson County Catholic champs were Art Kiernan in the mile, George Pfanner in the shot- put, and Richie Perry in the pole vault. A But the last meet of the season turned out to be the best for Saint Michaels. That was the Independence Day meet held at Roosevelt stadium. The Irish scored more points than Union Hill, Emerson, and Holy Family put to- gether, won the city title, and added another trophy to the schools collection. Since this book goes to press before the 1952 season, very little can be said about it. The author is a high school girl known to one of our teachers. She was born to wealth because her paternal grandparents had risen out of poverty through self-denial, industry, and good sense. Less than two years ago, they and their sons and daughters-in-law were subjected to the ignominy of a people's trial, denounced as landlords, stripped of their visible wealth, and cast into prison. Because it was reported that the family still had gold concealed somewhere, they were terribly tortured in an effort to wrench their supposed secret from them. They were then strung up on trees, publicly beaten until unconscious, revived, questioned, strung up again, and thrown back into jail. Left guardianless, this girl and her brothers and sisters and cousins managed to live by carrying heavy loads of ore from the mines to the bus road a mile away. None of their neighbors dared help them or show them pity, because they were pariahs under the Communist social system. Certainly under pressure and probably under physical punishment, in the newspaper article the writer distorts the facts relating to her own family, and she has her grandparents and parents meting out the kind of torture that she, herself, saw meted out to them. The article is read from right to left, and from top to bottom. The first caption on the extreme right reads, Renounces her landlord family . 'The second reads, Has become a good daughter of Mao Tze Tung . The third says, Converted while attending the Hsin Ping County Ninth District great public trial. And the fourth gives the status of the writer, First year, second term student of Cheng-Shen Central High, officer of the Youth Organization , and the girl's name, Chao Yun Mao . ' She begins by saying that she was formerly a counter-revolutionist, but last Saturday when the whole school attended the great public trial engineered by the Peasants' Organi- zation, she had a change of heart and now understands what an evil landlords are. She tells her story in this vein: Her grandfather, arrested at the time of the land reforms in the Autumn of 1950, came from a family who had been landlords from time immemorial. Under the Kuoming- tang regime, he had been like an emperor in his countryside, and the local magistrates ran at his bidding like so many dogs. He was the owner of five hundred mu of land, and all the peasants had suffered from him and hated him. She remembers distinctly that during the harvest just before the liberation, he sent the police to collect debts from the farmers before they had a chance to sell their grain, and it all went into his granaries. When they came crying for mercy, he had them beaten and turned away. After several days, because they had nothing to eat, they broke into the granaries and stole back their grain. When her grandfather learned what had happened, he summoned the four or five ringleaders, had them stripped of their clothes, hung from trees, and beaten with bamboo rods until they were unconscious. Then he revived them and forced them to promise to return the grain with interest. His revenge didn't end there, for he had these men inducted as Kuomingtang soldiers, and they left the village crying aloud that their families now had no means of support. The girl, not knowing then all she knows now, felt no pity for the men, and even thought their cries and tears fun to watch. . He father was also a wicked tyrant. An educated man, he used his wits to defraud the poor. The farmers entrusted their money to him to be used for a co-operative, and instead he enriched himself by investing it in illicit salt trade. After the liberation, these farmers demanded. their blood and sweat account from him, and jailed him. At that time, she hadn't yet undergone revolutionary indoctrination, and stood by her father's side and shrieked when he was taken away. When she first entered high school, she was ashamed to tell that she had come from a family of landlords lest her classmates would dislike her. But, last Saturday, when the populace accused Li Ta Tsai at the great public trial, she found her heart changing. She is now no longer an anti-revolutionary. She hates Li Ta Tsai to the death, and she hates to the death her grandfather and father. All of them were like great ivory tusks that bit into and ground the helpless poor. Before two or three hundred of her schoolmates, she stood up and denounced her family's crimes and her own great wrong in sympathizing with them. But she atones by resolutely renouncing her family, and proclaiming herself a good daughter of the revolution . . . a good daughter of Mao Tze Tung! We have tried to show the American way in a typical Catholie High School hy allowing a sane normality to speak for us. And, fora our own guidance, we have even pointed a finger at the shadow of i a danger that might come. But all the while we have heen conscio 'V that we prohahly know more ahout the evils of Communism thai! do most schools, even Catholic schools. For, those responsihle S our school - the Passionist Fathers and the Sisters of Charity 11 g have stakes in the Chinese mission field, and have suffered and the Communist regime. A . V And, so, we understand quite well that under Communist- . auspices all of our pleasant school days would have heen seasone still suffering through personnel and loss of property there und with hitterness. The hitternessP Armed soldiers swaggering througf' our corridors and into our classrooms, soldiers standing guard d '- party ojicers taking notes at our innocent cluh meetings and gatherings, all of our free time and much of our scheduled f ig, s if ' ,, 1 time channelled into party activities, our light-hearted hursts of son g' disciplined hy the regimented shouting of party slogans, our fun ia dancing curtailed to the single I and uglyfj Peasants' H op,' our sports, eliminated, and the energies of our athletes forced into the kind competition that wastes men and creates lahor heroes. Even ou? personal tastes in dress would have heen tampered with, and would have heen restricted to a single work-a-day style I in school or outj, all hright and lovely colors toned down to a somher khaki or hlue or hlack, with our hoys exhihiting shaved heads and our girls parading the Ana Pauker hair-do. But these encroachments upon minor liherties are symptomatic of far greater evils. Under cover of their excitement, we would have heen encouraged to spy on each other, to lie ahout our spiritual directors and teachers, to jeer at our elders, to report on our relatives, to sneer at the principles that made our country great, and to spit and trample upon the crucifix. Long hefore graduation, we would have heen thoroughly schooled in hate and duplicity and expediency. Per- plexed and sick at heart, the weaker among us would - even as the girl in the accompanying Chinese newspaper clipping - have struck out wildly and hlindly, perhaps many times, at those to whom owe only loyalty and the deepest kind of gratitude. However, it has not heen so with us. We are the children of it free country, educated in the schools of our parents' choice, fortified hy a doctrine of toleration and love. Thank God!
