Pastor of St.'Micf1ueI,s Monastery Church 12 HEVEHE U CU UH MU ASHA DP. tn the spring of 1943, Father Conor Monaghan, CP., hecame the Pastor ot St. Michaels Monastery Church, succeeding Reverend Berlin Donohue, CP., who is now Business Manager of THE SIGN. Father Conor with his competent assistants, Fathei Michaet, Father Atexander, Father Charles and Father Ronald Anthony, minister whole' heartedty and devotedty to the needs ot an extensive parish. Their supervision extends to St. Michaetys Grammar and High Schools to which they give unsethshty of their time. and assistance to the varied activities associated with Cathotic sch-oot hte. Father' Conor's visits to the schoot are usuatty the essential ones of a husy man with many duties. Engaged with the constant demands ot the ttoct: under his spiritual Care and guidance, Father Conor has tittte time tor direct personal contact with the students of the high school, hut att welcome him whenever he is tree to he present at the games and other high school events, and tisten with interest to his deep voice, heard on occasion during the year, over the schoot radio. The zeat and tarsightedness of Father Conor have heen strikingly evidenced in the wortc he has undertaken ot huitding a Parish Halt. A huitding for parish and school activities has heen a tong-felt need and to mt that need Father Conor is hending att his energy. His unttagging ettorts to further the project and hring it to comptetion have not tessened, in spite ot the ditticutties he has had to contend with. Even the ohstactes inci- dent to the war have not heen ahte to dampen his enthusiasm or to daunt his courage. The students of St. Ntichaets are also interested in the accomptishment of Fathers ptans, and ptedge their support. The Class of '45 took forward to meeting Father Conor and atumni ot the high schoot at the future Michaetian games, plays and sociat events hetd in the new St. Ntichaets Memorial Hatt. To try to sum up in a brief paragraph au that he has meant to us in the past two years would not he possihte, for each student feels a personal gratitude for some special help or henefit. We shall remember many things connected with our four years at St. Michaels hut some of our happiest memories and scenes most vividly present to the mincts eye will he associated with him. What senior cannot recall his stimulating talks at Catholic Action Chih meetingsg his raisect eye-hrows as reports were given outg informal talks in the office or at school dances and garnesg Upepn talks over the radio? Barhara Tighe, Secretary, had some hard times trying to keep a record of the fast-moving events at each session. Adriano Ricciardi, who was voted to the trustworthy olrlice ot Treasurer, had the duty of collecting the inevitalale dues. At the heginning of the year, all the memhers were, ohligaiied to read one article to the Cluh and to memorize a selection of live minutes' length. Criticism was then freety given in order that all the memhers could prolit from each other,s mistalces. Everyone was encouraged to render short speeches or to discuss his individual ideas on dillrerent Sula- jects. Eltort was made to eliminate nervousness and stress was placed on good posture, correct diction, and complete naturalness. By this means, many memhers were ahle to tallc extemporaneously in a short while. This was the period of preparation, Father Alexander soon taught all the funda- mentals of dehate. Negative and alilirmative sides were chosen to dehate important national and social questions, such as Hlqesolvedz One Year ol Compulsory Military Training Alter the War.,5 Words llew and the rehuttals were to the point. This was characteristic of all the delnates entered into. A The meetings were loolaed forward to hy everyone, hecause ot the worthwhile tallcs given hy Father Alexander. He instructed the memlners about Catholic views on social, political and national issues. He pointed out to us why these outloolcs were correct and authentic. Consequently, when the year was up, a group of well-informed young men and women had learned to express well, and with conviction, the Catholic viewpoint. 108 MIEHAELIAN HULLEHS HE tVIict1aetian Rotters organized their ctutn in 1943, tn the very beginning of this year the members stiowect an enthusiasm that was to matce the Michaetian Rollers one of ttie outstancting school activities in I945.
