During the Age of Faith, the students of the great medieval universities hon- ored Our lady in a special way under the title of Our Lady of the Schools. Distant as we are from them in time and even more remote from them in learning, we hope to approach them in our devotion to her, who for us, no less than for them, is our Queen and Mother. In the thirty-two years of our school's history it has been the privilege and ioy of the Sisters of Charity to implant in our hearts a love of Mary, our Mother. Equally zealous for the glory of Mary has been our beloved pastor, Monsignor McWilliams, who as the school's first principal, as teacher, and as pastor has helped to make St. Michael's Marian-minded. ln centering our Archangelo around the theme of Our Lady, we know that we are best honoring those who have taught us to love and venerate her. But above all, we wish to express our devotion and loyalty to the Queen of the Uni- verse, God's Mother and ours. From our earliest days she has been a loving Mother ever ready to help and protect us. Moy she continue to watch over us, until we share with her the triumph of her glorious Assumption and ioin her in the heavenly kingdom where she reigns as Queen forever. Sports ....... 'l,g ,ye rr a ov' John XXIII We have all been iubilant about one of the most stirring events that can happen in any age, the election of a successor to the Prince ofthe Apostles. Even before the universal grief for the death of the beloved and saintly Pius XII had subsided, the cardinals in solemn con- clave and guided by the Holy Spirit, had selected an occupant to the chair of Peter. Christ who promised to remain with us always, does so in the person of John XXIII. Historians like Macaulay have recognized the eternal character of the papacy and have pre- dicted its survival when all temporal sovereignty shall have ceased. But for us no further prophecy is needed than the teaching of Christ, Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. We pray that the same Spirit that chose our Holy Father to be the head ofthe Church, will strengthen him in the days ahead. And may she whom Christ from the cross bequeathed to His be- loved disciple, extend her motherly care and protection to this other John, The Vicar ot Her Son. We do not speak for ourselves alone, but we echo the thoughts of the more than two thousand graduates who have also come within the range of your in- fluence and inspiring example. Many of these have heard the Divine call and like you have entered the ranks of the sacred priesthood, and a great number have been inspired to follow the religious life. But the vast maiority have become the splendid body of good Catholic lay men and women, who in every age and every place are the backbone of the Church. As we look back over the many distinguished alumni whose achievements have brought honor to our school, we eagerly hope that we too will make you equally proud of us. Of one thing however we are certain, and it is that the ideals which you have implanted in us, will remain an inspiration, and an incentive to prove our- selves worthy of your trust. The divine truths with which you have brought us into contact, and which you have interpreted for us by your life will God willing, be the standard by which we shall always live. It was a cloudy, dismal morning but that did not put a damper on their spirits, They stopped for breakfast on the highway and then continued on to Baltimore where they dined in one ot the colonial hotels. Arriving at Annapolis, they were taken on a tour through the Naval Academy. lt was with reluctance they left Annapolis, but the sight of Washington, beautiful in the setting sun was adequate compensation. Though tired from the long iourney all were ready and willing for the night tour of the city. Tours through the Capitol Building, the F. B. l Building, the Smithsonian lnstitute, the Art Gallery and other well-known buildings, were interesting as well as informative. The third and last day was occupied by visiting Mount Vernon, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Statue of Iwo Jima and the most beautiful and inspiring Franciscan Monastery. This year's re- treat, which was given at the be- ginning of the second semester, was conducted by Father Francis X. Brock, S.J. His forceful and il- luminating conferences deeply im- pressed the students. Everyone appreciated the op- portunity of with-drawing from the distractions of everyday life and of being brought into contact with spiritual realities. The great- est privilege of the retreat was, of course, the daily retreat Mass at which most of the students re- ceived Holy Communion. The other spiritual exercises reinforced the great Act of the day and made the students more Christo- centric. We hope that the retreat will continue to be effective in their lives as they continue through school and when they go out into the world. The members have made many cheery favors to brighten hospital trays and they are a ray of sunshine to shut-ins and orphans by their generous gifts of bright picture books, games, toys and puzzles. Some ofthe meetings ofthe club are devoted to forums on healthier living. Red Cross Moderator Sister M. Dolorosa The Mission Club is always one of the pivotal clubs of any Catholic high school. Our late Holy Father declared that to be Catholic is to be apostolic. The students of St. Michael's show their zeal and prove their apostolic spirit by their efforts and their sacrifices on behalf of the missions. Mission Day calls out all the talents and devices ofthe student body for fund- raising, as class vies with class to be top in mission aid. Any topic which is of general importance to Catholics may be brought up for study and discussion, not only for the enlightenment of the members, but also that they may be able to answer intelligently the difficulties and objections of others. A Catholic Action group can never regard knowledge as an end in itself, but as a means to an end, and that is to make the Catholic faith better known and understood. The dissemination of Catholic literature in hospitals and homes for the aged is a fruitful means of apostolate which is undertaken by this group. Moderator Sister Rose Marita This is the club to which future diplomats and linguists naturally gravitate, but its appeal is much wider than this and there is practically no student who cannot profit by membership in and attend- ance at a French Club. lt is with great difficulty that a language teacher in a secondary school steals time from irregular verbs and past participial agreements to enliven the lesson by a few games, songs or dram- atic skits. Yet certainly all these activities are not only enioyable but are an extremely valuable part of language education. These are the features of a club which make the study of a language attractive as well as useful. Moderator Miss Mueller The Public Relations Club is one which recog- nizes a very definite need for improved technique in public relations. lt aims first to improve the public speaking of its members by prepared speeches and by the use of the tape recorder. Advertising methods and psychology are studied with a view to understand- ing and applying them. Study of communications, such as television, radio and newspaper, and presented reports on these are an important part of each member's training. Record Breakers are: E. Tolentino, P. Gannucci. Not since the late 40's has St. Michael's Track Team enioyed the success it has experienced dur- ing the past season. The performances of the 2- Mile Team, in particular, were such that national attention was attracted to little St. MichaeI's High School. ln Pete Gannucci, a member ofthe Senior Class, Al Adams, Ernie Tolentino and Frank Jaworisak, lthe latter three Juniorsl, the St. MichaeI's High School Relay Team surpassed all previous records made by New Jersey School Relay Teams. Al Adams, on the strength of his 4 minute 28 seconds mile performance in the Newark Armory this past winter, stands a good chance of creating a world's interscholastic record for this distance before graduating from school. Ernie Tolentino is not far behind Al in the mat- ter of record-breaking and he too, before gradu- ation, should equal or surpass the national school- boy Half-Mile Run. Pete Gannucci, the gritty Captain, played no small part in the success of this team and his loss will be greatly felt.
