During our pilgrimage through Saint Michael's High School, you have been our pleasant moderator, our firm guide and our scholarly inspiration. You have directed us with shining rays of knowledge, love, patience and under- standing. A mere Thank You would be hollow, this cherished and long-awaited Archangelo of our own is just a tiny echo of the tremendous accolade of gratitude you deserve. From the time we arrived here as frightened freshman, until today, in our last days as sophisticated seniors, we have benefitted by your concern for our individual growth. You have taken our characters and molded them into semblances of Catholic men and women. Using the compass of knowledge, and the light of prayer, you have led us into the channel which will lead us to the fulfillment of our life's pilgrimage, when we shall triumphantly meet, not at Canterbury, but at the throne of God. Gratefully, THE CLASS OF 1958 X f..- N Km Sister Maria Thais Principal C LTY Four years ago, we, the graduating seniors, started our classes in St. Michael's High School. With the unknown before us we were given strength and courage by the instructors who are so loyal to their profession. During these happy, profitable and blessed years that we have spent at St. Michaelis, our teachers have not only led us to the road of truth and wisdom, but also taught us to be soldiers in Christ's Army. When we no longer have Ibooks before us from which we can solve our problems, many times we will be able to look back upon the words of the faculty, our teachers to whom we are so very grateful. In them, as our friends, we have placed our confidence when many times our hope was faltering. The lessons they have taught us will again be our reliance and a source of guidance to us in the future. 66 Our memories of high school days stand clear, Each wonderful moment we hold so dearg Our teachers-companions, advisors, and friends, Their voices we'll hear 'til we tum that last bend . Just as the merry Canterbury pilgrims amused themselves during their tedious journey by their stories and merry quips, so the scholarly Michaelians allocate many a pleasant hour to entertainments as well as serious, extra-curricula activities. The senior trip to Washington was echoed by the student body's procession in honor of Mary. The annual retreat gave Michaelians an opportunity to isolate themselves from the active school year and reflect quietly on their personal spiritual status. Every Wednesday morning was eagerly awaited, since fourth period meant club period. Students' skills and talents from formal oratory to brush-and-palette work could easily be developed under the care of the patient and helpful moderators, The pre-Christmas season was delightfully enhanced by the in- spirational assembly presented by the juniors to commemorate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the traditional Christmas scenes portrayed by the Spanish students. The seniors delighted the school with their St. Patrick's Day offering, and were themselves honored when thirteen outstanding students were selected for the National Catholic Honor Society awards. The gruesome' exams were balanced by the gay social events: the Mission Danceg the Cheerleaders' Afternoon Dance, the Halloween Masquerade. All of these events have been recorded, not only in the Michaclian and Archangelo pages, but in the memories of all those who worked so hard to make 1957-1958 one of the most active and fun-filled years the Archangel has surveyed. ,f X .V x ll Cx X 5 SL . ll v l lu 5 I U f r ,gi F731 +mJ,,p H K X J R ' . The two buses chartered for the trip were scheduled to leave the gym door at 6:30 A.M. Due to a half hour delay in their departure their anxiety and excitement grew with every passing minute. Finally at 7 A.M. they left on the first leg of their journey. On the way to their first rest stop at Delaware they went over the tremendous Delaware Memorial Bridge. Then they continued on to Maryland for lunch. One of the most interesting stops was at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. At Washington they visited the Capitol Building, the White House, the Smithsonian Institute, the F.B.I. Building, the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, Mount Vernon, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the newly erected monument to those who died at Iwo Jima. Their trip was over after the three days, but they will never forget the wonderful sights and the fun and excitement that they experienced on their Washington trip. VOD May Crownin Brmg owers of the l1lf9Sl.,, During our journey, we, the seniors of 1958, have been going first to Mary, with Mary to Christ, and with both to our Father. In May, Mary s month, we attested our love and devotion by our great pro- cession and the crowning of Our Queen and Mother. In our procession we were truly marching in the Queenis regiment in the army of Christ, The King. This great procession began with the marching of the entire school, singing the beautiful hymns of Mary through Hamil- ton Park. The ceremony commenced with the crowning of our Blessed Mother at the main altar which was adorned with beauti- ful flowers. We hope we shall continue our journey all through our lives, as a regiment of heroes and heroines fighting the battles of the Lord courageously, vigorously and fearlessly under the leadership of Mary, our Queen, our Advocate, and our Mother. 78 12 A procesuon pause Barbara OMura Luth attendants Left to Right Vlary Pa! Michaelian religious growth was greatly advanced by the retreat given this year by Reverend Cotter, SJ. The retreat day began with Mass and Holy Communion at 8:30 and the remainder of the day was devoted to spiritual conferences, spiritual reading, Rosary, the Vllay of the Cross and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, As the retreat came to a close with the Communion breakfast, seniors deeply appreciated the last opportunity St. Michael's provided to help improve their spiritual lives. They will carry with them into their future lives the spiritual benefits, strength, direction, and great peace and blessings gained in their retreats at St. Michael's. This was a truly inspiring story which reminded us of all the holy and diligent people in the world, and to the one poor boy to whom she appeared. As an American Catholic: I belive in the divine providence of God and in His increasing care and solitude for us all. I believe our American heritage is more than political and religious freedom, it is freedom from fear and freedom from want. The very founda- tions upon which our American way of life has been built will be our bulwark against the dangers with which we are now faced. I believe in President Eisenhower and his ad- ministration will protect the United States by making use of every means to advance in nuclear warfare. We must see to it that our growth is strong enough to safeguard the general welfare and yet be free enough to safeguard the human rights of man. I believe that in unity there is strength and that everyone of us, no matter what our position in life may be, must work and pray to keep a unified America and to form a world brotherhood of nations. I believe that we should daily pledge allegiance to the fiag of the United States which symbolizes the ideals which we have fought for from the Revolu- tionary War to the Korean War, in order to keep for us that peace which we now enjoy. SETON FORENSIC SPEECH -- SEGREGATION Segregation can be compared to a plague-a deadly plague. It didn't have its beginning in Little Rock. This was only an outbreak. It was here ever since God created mang when the human mind began to distinguish between color and one man said, MI am white, and you are black, brown, red, yellow. Now that segregation has spread all over the United States, the question arises concerning integration. Should we have integration or should man live separately, hiding behind the borders of his own individual state? There are two known kinds of integration existing today: the first is when a few choice negro students are selected to attend school with the other white children, in this way there is a vast limitation. The second is when negroes and whites from one section attend the same neighborhood school. Fifteen percent of the pupils in New York are negro. But negro leaders are not satisfied, they argue for racial balance. Each school should at least contain 1571 negro children. This is almost impossible, for the housing patterns in New York City are predominantly white in one section or black. But they are not abandoning their plans for integration, for the negroes are demanding bus transportation from section to section. A program has also been achieved which calls for the rezoning of school districts. New schools will be built on the fringes of white and negro sections, A good example of transportation is the traveling of thirteen negroes from the Bronx, which takes them from two to three hours daily, just to attend school with white children. If this is successful, there is a possibility that it will spread. The cities in the south are citing New York as what will happen if they start integration, which they are set against, I must ask you a question: Do the children follow their mothers and fathers or do they have their own individual ideas? Where prejudice is planted, it will grow. Just how far can segregation go? - Transcribed from notes made at contest welif 'U ME Club officers deciding the future course of history! Here at the foot of the altar our journey has come to its end. With humble submission to the will of God we look ahead, ahead to a mist-filled future, ahead to a more extensive journey, ahead perhaps to different paths for each of us, paths which may never cross again. Thus, as we gently close the cover of this our 1958 edition of the Archangelo, three thoughts and desires remain uppermost in our mindsg that our journey, with all its obstacles and joys may have come to some avail, that by our mistakes those following will profit, and that perhaps somewhere there remains even a small vestige of our journey-a vestige that will flourish and bring forth good. With heartfelt thanks, we, the staff of the 1958 Archangelo express our appreciation to all those who in any way have aided us in this publication of our yearbook: To our pastor, Monsignor Leroy McWilliams and his assistant priests for their friendly guidance and direction. Our principal, Sister Maria Thais, who has always been a guide and mentor, our teachers and classmates who made our journey so pleasant and so rewarding, most especially, our moderator, Miss E. Muller, and our financial director, Sister Mary Magdalen. X Our photographer, Mr. Davis and his assistants, Mr. Christie and Mr, O'Brien, who generously allocated us their time and skills, our publisher, Mr. Lawshe, for his advice and encouragement, to Elaine Scherr, our former classmate, for her sketches, and finally, All the faithful friends who have in any way assisted us in financing our 1958 Archangelo. mx 'i Ncwm w.
