Providence is their guide Brother H. Maurice, Principal of St. Mel, Moderator of Fathers and Friends Club, is the man behind the scenes in just about everything with the name of the school tagged to it. He is an alumnus of De La Salle High School in Joliet, Illinois. An avid sports fan, Brother will offer his comments for hours on any sport. His advice has reached the ears of such notables as John Bigney, Vice-President of Chicago White Sox. He was the Athletic Director at De La Salle, Chicago, and President of the Catholic League in 1950. Brother was appointed as principal of St. Mel in 1953 and has been here ever since prevading the corridors of the school with his friendly and cheerful attitude. Assistant Principal, Brother J. Richard, has a very busy job of getting the students of the West Build- ing prepared to make the best of their high school career. Brotheris favorite past-times are reading and hiking. He has taught at De La Salle, Chicago, Boys Town, Nebraska, De La Salle, Kansas City, and has been the Director of Novices at the Novitiate in Glencoe. Besides being so busy with school activ- ities, Brother coached baseball and basketball at De La Salle, Kansas City. Brother also has been fortunate to study Theology at the Motherhouse in Rome for one year Q19-4-9-19501 . A native Chicagoan, Brother H. Dominic, has helped boys plan their future through his ecxellent Guidance Program. Brother likes tennis, reading. good music and hiking. For what is more pleasant to someone who has done a hard day's work than to listen to some good music? Brother has also taught at Cotter High School, Winona, Minnesota. Among the subjects the Brother has taught are: English algebra, geometry, Latin, and religion. Brother's ambition is to teach in the philosophy and psychol- ogy departments at St. Mary's College. When asked what Brother thought of his job as Guidance Di- rector, he said: HI find the assignment as Guidance Director most satisfying because of the opportunity it gives me to help each boy as a person, rather than as a member of a class, to decide upon and carry out his life plansf, 10

brother director- peak of the MESSAGE TO THE STUDENT BODY: With the completion of this school year, we stand on the threshold looking hack over forty years of Catholic Education at St. Mel High School. We see this school, and the even longer list of faithful alumni who have profited hy this instruction. We are proud of our record established over so many years by the fine work which has preceded us, and we thank God for sending us such excellent men. But to stand on the threshold and look only to the rear is fruitless unless we look also to the future. Our gaze must he in both directions. We can justly feel pride in our accomplishments of the past forty years. We must also look to the future to try to find out what the Catholic Education that we have received at St. Mel High School will mean to us, what it will do to make our lives more Christian, more American. The past can only aid us if we apply its experience to our present and future. As we look to the record of the past through the pages of this book, let us also look to the future, that our deeds may he recorded with equal pride by generations yet to come. Sincerely in IMI, ,xgrofder Camilfus, Director. pyramid
