A N brother director- peak of the MESSAGE TO THE STUDENT BODY: With the completion of this school year, we stand on the threshold looking hack over forty years of Catholic Education at St. Mel High School. We see this school, and the even longer list of faithful alumni who have profited hy this instruction. We are proud of our record established over so many years by the fine work which has preceded us, and we thank God for sending us such excellent men. But to stand on the threshold and look only to the rear is fruitless unless we look also to the future. Our gaze must he in both directions. We can justly feel pride in our accomplishments of the past forty years. We must also look to the future to try to find out what the Catholic Education that we have received at St. Mel High School will mean to us, what it will do to make our lives more Christian, more American. The past can only aid us if we apply its experience to our present and future. As we look to the record of the past through the pages of this book, let us also look to the future, that our deeds may he recorded with equal pride by generations yet to come. Sincerely in IMI, ,xgrofder Camilfus, Director. pyramid Providence is their guide Brother H. Maurice, Principal of St. Mel, Moderator of Fathers and Friends Club, is the man behind the scenes in just about everything with the name of the school tagged to it. He is an alumnus of De La Salle High School in Joliet, Illinois. An avid sports fan, Brother will offer his comments for hours on any sport. His advice has reached the ears of such notables as John Bigney, Vice-President of Chicago White Sox. He was the Athletic Director at De La Salle, Chicago, and President of the Catholic League in 1950. Brother was appointed as principal of St. Mel in 1953 and has been here ever since prevading the corridors of the school with his friendly and cheerful attitude. Assistant Principal, Brother J. Richard, has a very busy job of getting the students of the West Build- ing prepared to make the best of their high school career. Brotheris favorite past-times are reading and hiking. Brother also has been fortunate to study Theology at the Motherhouse in Rome for one year Q19-4-9-19501 . A native Chicagoan, Brother H. Dominic, has helped boys plan their future through his ecxellent Guidance Program. Brother likes tennis, reading. good music and hiking. For what is more pleasant to someone who has done a hard day's work than to listen to some good music? Brother has also taught at Cotter High School, Winona, Minnesota. Among the subjects the Brother has taught are: English algebra, geometry, Latin, and religion. Brother's ambition is to teach in the philosophy and psychol- ogy departments at St. Mary's College. When asked what Brother thought of his job as Guidance Di- rector, he said: HI find the assignment as Guidance Director most satisfying because of the opportunity it gives me to help each boy as a person, rather than as a member of a class, to decide upon and carry out his life plansf, 10 prayer for catholic teachers BROTHER ARNOLD, F.S.C. On the following page is printed the music and lyrics of an Alma Mater Song composed and arranged this year by members of this class. We ask that it be considered as the modern addition to the 'fine school songs we already have. This new TONE is found not only in our new song, but also in the many activities and events of the year. As the year unfolded, it was soon apparent that this was a year destined to be one of the outstanding achievements. To kick olf the year the football team delighted its 'Fol- lowers with a most successful season. Charged with this fever of success, we went on to establish a new record in the Harvest Party Drive. Following in this chain reaction came the most memorable Homecoming pageantry in years. Not to be outdone, our basketball team, picking itself up off the floor from an early season knock-down, rallied itself to a blazing finish by copping second place in the Central section and thus gaining a berth in the play-offs. Keeping in tune with the successful tempo of the year, the Meldramatic Club took their bows after a season of thunderous applause. The past year has indeed been one of many achievements, and we have taken advan- tage of this year to tell the story by a new and novel method. To keep in step with the theme, we have presented the story in a modern way. By using a little color, design, art, and music-all tempered with simplicity-we have tried to create a uyearbook tirstfl We hope that you like it and that you will think of it as being unusual and outstanding. The Knight staff is indeed grateful to the many students who have so willingly devoted their talents toward making this book a reality. We show special gratitude for lVIr. The reason is the dedication of a new retreat house for the use of the boys of Christian Brothers' Schools. Here, on these grounds, many souls will find God, their God, amidst the splendor of the rolling countryside. This year sets a precedent, for a whole new string of memories will be carried by every alumnus. He will remember the beauty of the landscape and the stately log-hewn manor. He will carry with him a pleasant memory of sleeping in fresh, clean surroundings, and eating plenty of good food. But most of all, he will remember the three days he had spent alone with his God. The two topics discussed this year Were: uResolved-That Direct United States Economic Aid To Individual Countries Should Be Limited To Technical Assistance and Disaster Relief, and That United States Foreign Aid Should Be Substantially lncreasedf' Under the capable direction of Brother William and Brother Conrad, the .lunior Debate Team finished off the season with a sparkling record. With such a start they look forward to an even more successful season next year. 61 sounding off the big team Here before you is the largest team in the school. It represents well over 200 hours of practice and 100 hours of performance time on the part of each of its eighty members. They work without benefit of a season--that is, they -are on the job all the time in many different ways. You see them here in both of their modes. They perform as a marching and show band for the football games and parades. Above they are arranged in concert formation, ready to dazzle your ears with the lilting strains of Mozart or the 4'Fascinatin' Rhythml' of Gershwin. At our Basketball games a pep band was there to snap-up the cheers. ln a city-wide ensemble contest sixty-six band members took first-place medals, thereby giving St. Mel the lead position. They have by many such feats taken the title of the best band in Chicago. But this is not the entire picture, for behind them is one of the best band masters in the United States, Mr. Thomas Fabish. Mr. Fabish, who has been with St. Mel for twenty years, is the only man in the city of Chicago who is a member of the American Bandmaster's Association, a selective group of only one hundred of Americals bandmasters. As his associate he has Mr. Ralph Meltzer a most able director and music teacher of the finest grade. For a moderator they have Brother George who with his assistant Brother Christopher form the hardest-working part of the big team. They do the so-called dirty Work which consists of being a cleric, a janitor, a quartermaster, a sergeant at arms, and other numerous tedious tasks. As Rome wasn't built in a day- but it was built-St. Mel has been in the past few years going one step at a time in one direction-up. To sum it up, we had, this year, the horses to achieve goals that eluded us for many years. The Knights shut out St. Ignatius ffirst time in historyj, tied Fenwick fafter a long droughtj, and their most important achievement, reached the Catholic League Playoffs for the first time since 1935. lt was quite a season. On a feverish afternoon at Garfield Park, the Varsity gave a hint of what was to come. They pushed a better than average Gordon Tech team all over the field in a spring scrimmage. Further evidence that St. Mel was a definite power to be reckoned with was shown in their first exhibition game. They left the Loyola Ramblers groaning on the gridiron in a 25-0 shambles. A true test of a champion begins in the Catholic League-the Big Ten of high school football. Our season brieHy went as follows: After slugging it out toe-to-toe with the Weber Red Horde, the Knights bowed in a heart-breaker, 7-6. Uncrushed and determined the Knights rebounded by rumbling over St. Patrick, 25-12. Only once again, decimated by the Asian Flu, we ran into a classy Mount Carmel eleven to be clawed, 33-12. Still the spark was not smothered as they ground out a 7-O thriller over St. Phillip in a vicious game. The victory thirsty Knights proceeded to chew up St. Ignatius, 12-0. The grand finale of the season was a mud-soaked 7-7 deadlock with Fenwick. By virtue of this game, St. Mel qualified for a playoff berth and took undisputed possession of second place in the Central Section. ln the playoffs, the Knights fought hard and went down battling at the hands of their nemesis, Mt. Carmel, 39-19. This was the season-here is the team that made itg indeed a MODERN TEAM. END . . . Ray Knecht . . . In a few short weeks they put together a Freshman team that achieved a 1-1-1 record, with a victory over St. Patrick 20-7, a O-0 tie with St. Philip, and a 13-12 loss to Fenwick. Voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates was halfback John Bosco. Top defensive linemen were Leo Sisleono and Rocco Filaponi. THE SOPHS Again Mr. Bob Cahill turned in a masterful coaching job by leading his powerful Soph team to a semi-spectacu- lar 3-1 season. Falling to the victory- hungry Sophs were perennially powerful Lane Tech, 27-0, St. Patrick, 26-O, and Taft 26-O. Only foe able to cross the defense-minded Sophs goal was Schurz, 15-13 victor while the Knights were plagued by the Hu epidemic. In the pre-season games, the St. Mel Heavies left everyone at the post with an opening burst of 5 straight wins, then settled down to an even pace by swapping 2 wins for 2 losses as they rounded the club house turn. Suddenly, hampered by a lame leg, the team slowed down to a walk by losing the first game in the De Paul tournament and 3 opening league games. As they went into the far turn, our boys gained steam by splitting 4 games. Then, like Silky Sullivan, coming into the home stretch, the hard driving Knights knocked out 3 victories in a row. Another loss and a win to come under the wire in the money-2nd place-Central Section, and a playoiii berth-an old habit with St. Mel Basketball teams. The 1958 season had its ups and downs for thc heavies. just when the outlook was dimest, our court cagers delighted their followers with a sudden flash of speed which gained them a playoff bid, only to be snuffed out in a last minute thriller by the Leo Lions 60-57. A peculiar feature of the peach fuzz kids Knot a senior on the teamj was their ability to rise to the occasion. ln the Fenwick Tournament, the so-called mediocre lights knocked over highly-touted St. Pat,s and made Weber sweat it out thru an overtime to squeeze out a win. When the spotlight of pressure was brightest, they responded quickest. The team had their Valley Forges but never a Waterloo. A losing streak never broke their spirit. Handicapped mostly by lack of experience, the lights under the patient linger of Coach Luksta, over- came much of their difficulty and had their moments of glory. The Field Events such as the broad jump, shot put, pole vault, high jump, and hurdles-both high and low - comprise the better por- tion of a Track meet. Coach Holland has been heard to say that without personnel that is successful in Field events, a Track team is not likely to do very well. St. Mel was able to boast a truly out- standing Field event man in the 1958 season.
