SCHUUL Kildare next' Anyone familiar with the West Side can recognize this famous corner Here the prominent and traditional splres of St Mel towering toward the cross watch school life thrive in its shadows Enscrubed in the sandstone above the win dows of the East Building are the words Rell gion and Morality The Basis of Patriotism This is our advertisement to the world of the aims and functions of our school the forma tion of worthy Catholic citizens We who are St Mel sense this ideal written in our envlron ment This is the spirit of St Mel We hear this spirit in the murmur of pray ers the tinkling of bells the crescendo of cheers for our competitive heroes and the echoes of instruction and guidance. We see this spirit worn on school sweaters chalked on boards- splashed on bulletin boards and woven into the shrines and paintings throughout the school. We see this spirit in the clusters of boys huddled about the Brothers from dawn till dusk getting that personal touch -a Hallmark of the Christian Brothers and the dedicated laymen who help them. We feel the spirit of St. Mel in His Holy Presence. That Presence gives life and meaning to St. Mel - Our Window to the World . A look out the window on this page causes us to reflect again on this unbeatable combina- tion -Christianity and Patriotism. Nurtured in the shadow of the cross and protected by the Flag of the Free we can confidently look toward the future with faith and hope. From other windows in our school we reflect upon tomorrow with a grim reminder.
